Der zweite Band der "Kopenhagen-Trilogie" liest sich wesentlich flüssiger. Tove sehnt ihren 18. Geburtstag herbei, bis dahin muss sie bei ihren Eltern wohnen. Meine Jugend ist nichts als ein Mangel und ein Hindernis, das ich nicht schnell genug überwinden kann.

Es ist mir gelungen den zweiten Band der "Kopenhagen Trilogie" in unserer Bibliothek auszuleihen. Er schließt sich unmittelbar an den Band "Kindheit" an und wir treffen viele der Protagonisten wieder. Tove hat eine Arbeitsstelle als Küchenhilfe und Zimmermädchen in eine Pension aufgenommen. Sie arbeitet täglich 12 Stunden und findet keine Kraft mehr zu lesen und zu schreiben.

A visit to the ophtalmologist leads via a poster in the waiting room to Mark Rothko. Henri Rousseau and his characteristic ballons connect to the narrotor's fear of flying.

The previous chapters tell stories about the sea and horses, corresponding to a painting by Gustave Courbet "Mer orageause" and a by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec showing a mounted guard, "En observation", both on exhibit in the Museo Nacional de Belleas Artes in Buenos Aires.

The novel is a report of a young man recent about his life since finishing school education, the events leading there and the people influencing him. The man is still very juvenile in his views and at first this put me off. Only when I realized that this is just the literary construct of a great writer I started to enjoy the story.

Suddenly it dawned on me: Each chapter consists of an episode or aspect of the narrator's life and a corresponding reflection of the life and work of an artist. Reading this book is a deep intellectual pleasure.

After a long time this is my first book outside the European / North American cultural region. And shows me how little I know about the other parts of the world. I had no idea of the War of the Triple Alliance, the deadliest in the history of South America, or painters like Cándido Lopez, who lost his right hand but struggled on an became deft with the left hand as well.

Ein literarisches Werk über oder eher im Umfeld von Gemälden. Das war es was mich zu diesem Buch bewegt hat. Der Anfang lässt keine Wünsche offen. Wie gehofft bin ich mehr am Nachschlagen im Internet als am Umblättern des Buches. 2 neue und eine oberflächlich bekannter Maler auf den ersten Seiten.

"The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor" is not very engaging. The best part was, when Lord St. Simon, Holmes's client of highest British nobility mentioned that previous clients
"...were hardly from the same class of society."

Ebenezer Scrooge and Harpagon found their Polish counterpart in Mr. Lucas (Pan Łukasz). Avacicious to the degree that not even the devil will accept him to hell (in his dream). The really funny part, however, is not the main story, but the fact that hell looks exactly like Warsaw in those days and repentance for the sinners is to do exactly the same as every day to eternity.

After a longer break I reached again for this catalogue and read the article on Claude Cahun. Born as Lucy Renée Schwob, she openly lived her non-binary sexual identity and had an enormous artictical breadth including literature, photography, collages, performance. And she fought against the Nazi occupation, who destroyed part of her work and almost killed her.

Dick and Perry get caught in Las Vegas. After seperation they are quick to confess and accuse each other. The trial is set for Garden City. Capote's mastership flamed up in the scene when they arrive in the city. He introduces it by two straying cats observing the events.

After several weeks of unsuccessful investigation a new tipoff leads the police in the right direction. They now have two suspects, but how to find and get hold of them, in particular if they left the country? But the murderers feel too safe after all this time and the noose begins to close around their necks.

Kindheit, das ist für Tove Ditlevsen nicht unbeschwerte Zeit à la Bullerbu, Kindheit ist lang und schmal wie ein Sarg, aus dem man sich nicht allein befreien kann. ... Der Kindheit kann man nicht entkommen, sie hängt an einem wie ein Geruch. ... Dunkel ist die Kindheit, und sie winselt wie ein kleines Tier, das man in einen Keller eingesperrt und vergessen hat.

Frage der Patentochter an Generals Wertmüller: "Ist die Gesellschaft in Venedig nicht ganz entsetzlich schlecht?" - "Die gute ist dort wie allenthalben und die schlechte ganz vortrefflich."

In solchen Dialogen zeigt sich CFMs Humor.

Herrlich der subtile Humor in dieser Geschichte.

A rivalry between Alan and Robin Oig, son of the famous Rob Roy almost lets them draw their swords. Only the ingenious idea of their host to measure their strenght with the pipes instead calms then down. Alan has to concede that Rob Roy is by far the better piper and the day ends in merry piping singing and drinking. This is one of the best and loveliest scenes in the book.

Die Hoffnung saß als flüchtiger Schimmer im glatten , schwarzen Haar meiner Mutter, das ich nie zu berühren wagte. Tove wächst in der Zwischenkriegszeit in einer Kopenhagener Arbeiterfamilie mit einer unnahbaren Mutter, Bruder und arbeitslosem Vater. Letzter begeistert sie für Bücher, obwohl die Mutter dagegen ist: Bücher machen wunderlich.

In some countries people joining partisans or outlaws go "into the woods", in the Scottish Highlands they take to the heather.

The entire Clutter family was killed with gun shots into their heads. And then one of the murderers goes home to have dinner with his family. Unbelievable.

I am astonished by the huge difference betweeen the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands. Gaelic then was the predominant language in the Highlands. This difference contributes a lot to the lasting fascination of the story.

Mein Körper und mein Körper gehören dem Drachen, ich bin seins. In dieser Aussage (auf deutsch auch im polnischen Original !) wird endgültig klar, dass der titelgebende Drachen identisch ist mit der Erde aus der alles kommt und zu der alles wird.

Holcomb, a small town close to Garden City in Finney County, Kansas. 1959, people are religious, assiduous and conduct a decent, quiet life. Herbert Clutter lives with his wife and children on one of the largest farmes in the county. But his wealth is in the land and the grain in the silos.

Still entertaining plot with trifle of Scottishness.

Few days before the next lock down I managed to visit this magnificent exhibition.

Der Einschub "Loretto. Höhe 165" stellt den Krieg in all seiner Entmenschlichung dar und gehört für mich zu den stärksten Teilen des Buches. Dagegen wirkt die Darstellung homosexueller SA-Männer um den schlesischen Gruppenführer Edmund Heines zu Beginn des III. Teils wie hinzugeklebt. Ist der Autor homophob?

Niemand hatte sich je die Zeit genommen, den Scheffel ausfindig zu machen, unter dem mein Licht stand.

Deniz Ohde stellt dem Lehrerberuf ein niederschlagendes Zeugnis aus. Ich möchte dem widersprechen, zugleich fühle ich aber, dass es immer noch viele solcher Kinder bzw. Jugendliche gibt, die nicht gehört und übersehen werden. Umso erstaunlicher, dass sie sich trotzdem durchgekämpft hat.
