The recent flare-up of the war in and around Nagrono Karabakh reminded us, that there still are areas in Europe, where people shoot at each other. The very East of Ukraine is such a region too. That is where this story is set, in an almost deserted village in the no man's land between the Ukrainian and separatist armies.

19th century brings along abundant growth, crinoline and love. Marmaduke Bonthrop Shelmerdine (what a name!) finds Orlando with a hurt ankle like Willoughby finds Marianne Dashwood in "Sense and Sensibility". Their shared ambiguity of sex - "Mar" has rather feminine appearance - brings them close. They marry and mate, but must separate after few days. End of Chapter 5

Bored by the conversations at ladies' invitations Orlando starts to invite the top three poets of her time, Pope, Addison and Swift, to her home. But every secret of a writer's soul ... is written large in his works and the gentlemen are less entertaining in real life. Finally Orlando professed great enjoyment in the society of her own sex and starts to vacillate between roles and sexes.

The paintings selected for this catalogue are not the highlights presented on the webpage of the galery. But each of them has a story to tell and that makes them special. I cannot wait to go to Berlin again an resee them - now with more informed eyes.

Different though the sexes are, they intermix. In every human being a vacillitation from one sex to the other takes place, and often it is only the clothes that keep the male or female likeness, while underneath, the sex is the very opposite of what it is above.

I guess this is the central and - at that time - revolutionary sentence of the novel.

Orlando sails home to Britain. During the voyage she is confronted with the opportunites and limits of being a woman. As a young man she had insisted that women must be obient, chaste and scented, and exquisitely apparelled. Now she herself has to pay the price for those convictions, "Heavens! What fools they make of us - what fools we are!"

Truth! Thruth! Truth! we have no choice left but confess - he was a woman. The central sentence of this novel marks the change of Orlando's sex. But this is not the only mythical element. Only unnoticed Orlandos lifetime has spread from the late days of Queen Elizabeth I. (end of 16th century) to King George I (beginning of 18th)!

I am listening to an audiobook edition in German translation. Balzac's description of his personnel is delightful. but I struggle to understand the French society after the restauration of monarchy. I had a similar feeling when reading "The Red and the Black".

With the harvest successfully brought in, the German women feel that they are no longer needed. Some flee across the nearby border to Austria. Some are sent away, but farmer Šenk and the old Zipfelová - both names indicate that they had German/Austrian ancestors - want to keep their women and provide them a future in the village. Still another German, old Führeder, is lynched by the Jechs because of sabotage.

Orlando's affair with a Russian princess was about losing my interest, only to regain full attention, when the ice breaks up after the great frost and many people die on the melting sheets of ice. Virgina Woolf paints a horrifying, but very imaginative picture.

This is my first encounter with Virginia Woolf. I am reading in English and the first pages already tell me that Mrs Woolf is a master of language.

A farmer from the small Perná (Bergen), a village once inhabited mainly by Germans, employs Gerta and a few other women from the camp. Finally they get some fresh water, food and can wash themselves. Gerta becomes the secretary of local provost and experiences some kind of normality. But Germans still have to wear the "N" armlet and sentments of wrath and revenge are strong.

Die Frage Warum gehst Du nicht in den Westen heißt richtiger Warum bleibst Du hier.
"Weil das Wertgesetz stimmt, und weil der Sozialismus nicht bleibt wie er ist."

Ich denke dieser Satz aus den 50er Jahren spiegelt auch die Gefühlswelt vieler Menschen in der Endphase der DDR wider.

Im dritten Teil treffen wie in einem Kammerspiel die wesentliche Akteure in Jerichow zusammen: Jakob, Gesine, Cresspahl, Jonas, Rohlfs und dessen Assistenten Hänschen. Beinahe kommt es zum Showdown, der durch Jakobs Eingreifen verhindert werden kann, so dass alle auseinandergehen, als ob nichts geschehen wäre. Das aber kommen die Dienste nicht zulassen.

Gerta, the main character, has a Czech mother and a German father. Still, she is expelled with her baby daughter from the city of Brno and sent together with most other German women and children on a march that proves fatal for many of them. Brutally raped she escapes death by the hands of Russian soldiers only to end up in an overcrowded camp infected by typhoid and dysentery.

The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle is somewhat "contructed", but with a likeable end.

In the last days of the war also Brno/Brünn experiences air raids. Tučková’s description touches me to the quick.

Der Ungarnaufstand ist ausgebrochen und Jakob und Gesine (die ihn im Osten besucht) entgehen nur durch einen Zufall der Verhaftung (die Leitung zur lokalen Dienststelle war gestört).

Unfortunately I had to turn the book back to the library, but can get it back end of November.

"The Man with the Twisted Lip" so far has been the most enjoyable story for me, not so well know <spoiler>and even no crime</spoiler>.

Ende Teil II. Mit Dr. Jonas Blach, einem Berliner Bekannten (Geliebten?) von Gesine Cresspahl lernen wir eine neue Sicht auf die Dinge der damaligen DDR kennen, die des Intellektuellen, der zwischen den beiden Städten Berlin hin und her pendelt und auf einen menschlichen Sozialismus hofft.

Zuvor hieß es: Das friedliche Atom in jedes Haus. Jetzt: Wir müssen siegen. Wen besiegen? Das Atom? Die Physik? Aber anders als über den Krieg wollen die Menschen über Tschernobyl nicht reden. Ihr Verhalten gleicht eher dem ehemaliger KZ-Opfer. Wollen Sie die Wahrheit wissen? Setzen Sie sich ruhig her und schreiben Sie mit ... Aber so ein Buch wird niemand lesen. Doch!

Gleich in den ersten Tagen nach dem Unglück verschwanden alle Bücher über radioaktive Strahlung ... aus den Bibliotheken. Der erste Reflex der Machthaber: Vertuschen und Kleinreden. Letzteres insbesondere gegenüber den als "Liquidatoren" eingesetzten Soldaten.

Mich fasziniert die Beschreibung der Gedankenwelt des Mitarbeiters der Staatssicherheit, der Jakob zur Kooperation überreden will. Etwas Vergleichbares habe ich erst wieder in dem Film "Das Leben der Anderen" erlebt.

Welche Art von Menschen siedeln sich wieder in Tschernobyl an. Rückkehrer, zumeist alt, ja. Aber auch Flüchtlinge aus den asiatischen Bürgerkriegsgebieten der zerfallenden Sowjetunion. Für sie ist die lauernde Gefahr der Radioaktivität immer noch als die unmittelbare von Gewehrläufen.

Mehrere Menschen berichten, dass die niedere Natur die Strahlung spürte bevor die Menschen ihrer gewahr wurden. Regenwürmer verzogen sich tief in die Erde, Bienen verließen ihre Bienenstöcke nicht mehr und Wespen flogen weg und bauten sich ein neues Nest.

Dies ist eines der Bücher, die am längsten auf meinem SuS gelegen haben. Den ersten Anlauf hatte ich noch zu Schulzeiten unternommen. Mittlerweile ist fast 40 Jahre später.

Ich habe die Lesung diese Buches im Radio mitgeschnitten. Dagmar Menzels Stimme ist gar nicht davon wegzudenken. Wer wissen will was sich hinter der ominösen "Anerkennung der Lebensleistung" verbirgt, die viele ehemalige Bürger der DDR einfordern, dem sei dieses Buch ans Herz gelegt.
