The Grande Armée "won" the battle of Borodin and conquered Moscow. Napoleon waits for the surrender, but the tsar still does not give in. With large parts of the city burned down the Napoleon decides in October to retreat, pretending it is a tactical withdrawal. He misses out eluding the (overly) cautious Kutuzov and returns the same road that his army pillaged during the invasaion. And winter looms.

Selbstwachsender Filz, neuartige Drogen, Riesen und Zombies, die Skuriliäten gehen lustig weiter. Zugleich aber ein unterhaltsamer literarischer "Road Movie" mit liebevoll gezeichneten Hauptpersonen. Aber auch in dieser Welt bleibt die soziale Distanz zwischen dem Intellektuellem (Doktor Garin) und der einfachen Bevölkerung (der "Krächz") bestehen.

Das ist mein erster Sorokin. Ich wusste, dass mich etwas ungewöhnliches erwarten würde. Das trifft zu. Was für eine Mischung aus dem Russland Tschechows, Platonows und Aksjonows. Die Rede ist von Werktätigen, aber im Radio kann man die Messe anSEHEN (kein Fehler). Und Pferde und Menschen gibt es im Miniaturformat. Klingt schräg, ist es auch, funktioniert aber.

Playing with a new views on sex and gender is a topic for many of the artists. While Leonor Fini exchanges the roles, Meret Oppenheim breaks up the borders into an androgyny of body and mind. Both women were close to the surrealists, but never submitted to their dogma. Still, Oppenheimer's 'Fur Cup' became a poster child of the movement and one of its first objects purchased by the MoMA in New York.

Fast keine Absätze. Wenigstens verwendet Hilbig Satzzeichen. Aber auch inhaltlich eine verworrene Lektüre. Lediglich die Wendung das erstickte Scheinen der Troittoirleuchten hat in mir so etwas wie Ostalgie geweckt. Tatsächlich habe ich genauso nächtliche, braunkohlendunstige, spärlich beleuchtete Nebenstraßen in Erinnerung.

Eine Lektüre für Zwischendurch. Im Beethoven-Jahr erworben eigentlich nur wegen des Titels:

Ein verkannter Schriftsteller fristet in Ostberlin seine Tage als Kesselheizer. In einer Schreibblockade - seine Texte sollen nicht von einem Fünkchen Wirklichkeit beeinträchtigt werden - wendet er sich der Musik und den Blumen zu.

Durch meine Vorlektüre auf den Geschmack gekommen, möchte ich meine Kenntnis über das historische, wie auch mythologisierte Leben Mohammeds vertiefen. Diese wunderbar bebilderte populärwissenschaftliche Buch fand sich dazu in meinem Bücherschrank.

Es startet mit einem türkischen Bilderzyklus aus dem 16. Jahrhundert über Mohammeds Himmelfahrt und Aufnahme ins Paradis.

Im afrikanischen Teil beeindruckt die Schilderung der Strapazen der Expeditionsreise durch den Dschungel. Und auch die Einsichten des Führers Sidi Mubarak Bombay bleiben haften: Richtig zu leben ist das beste Gebet oder Wenn keiner den Weg kennt, kann jeder führen.. Und die bittere Einsicht: Die wahren Entdecker waren die Sklavenhändler.

Ingrid Pfeiffer, curator of the exhibition, introduces in her article the rich and diverse œuvre of female artists, who were part of or close to surrealism. It contrasts the theory heavy male protagonists to the creativity of women, who became the subjects of art. The article is followed by "cadavres exquis" joint works of the group around writer and philosopher André Breton.

Among the five pillars of Islam the most interesting is the Hadj. Its description provides excellent collateral to the other book that I am reading at the moment. "Der Weltensammler" takes up the descriptions of Richard Burton, the first Westener you managed to get into Mecca and participate in the Hadj.

End of the second, "Arabian" part. Other than in India Burton fully immerges into the role of the Indian Sheikh Abdullah. Only once the report of his Hadj appears in print the Turkish and local authorities become aware of the bluff. But is it really a bluff? At time his disguise takes possession of Burton, and when he arrives at Mecca and gets sight of the Kabaa he is truely moved.

Ende des ersten Teils "Die historischen Grundlagen des Islam". Eine sehr gelungene Zusammenfassung der wichtigsten Ereignisse und Entwicklungen, die auch für das gegenwärtige Verständnis relevant sind. Besonders gefallen haben mir Prof. Halms etymologisch-grammatikalischen Herleitung zentraler Begriffe wie Muslim (der sich Ergebende), Kalif (Nachfolger), Imam (Gemeindeoberhaupt), Sunna (Brauch) und vieler anderer.

Having visited this fantastic (in duplicate sense) exhibition I could not abstain from buying the catalog in order to have these pictures and other objects of art with me for continued immersion.

Spannend: In der Frühphase des Islam gab es eine Strömung Mu'tazila, die dem Koran eine Zeitlichkeit zumaß. Durchgesetzt hat sich aber die Auffassung der ewigen Existenz, der Vorbestimmtheit des menschlichen Schicksals, ja der Leugnung der Kausalität (Okkasionalismus).

The last time I stopped reading after the Indian part. The second part is situated in Egypt and Arabia, easier to read but lacks the cultural intimicy of the first part.

Burton is eager to learn, but still maintains the attitude of a British officer, who cannot accept that his mistress Kundalini stays secretive about her past and that his servant Naukaram did not disclose it either until her death.

1861 marked the start of the American Civil war, but also the death of Leon Herckenrath. After his dealth one by one Leon's and Juliette's children move away from Geerbron, which is ultimately sold in 1871. In 1906 die Louis and Emma, the last of their children and are buried in the family tomb. Geerbron decays and nowadays only a wall is preserved of the once splendid estate.

Life is cruel. Juliette dies in 1856 with only 46 years and is buried in the family tomb in the dunes near Geerbron, together with Leon's mother and three of their children. Leon is a broken man. He no longer travels to the US as his health declines. But this is not the only decline.

Bischof Kamphaus entlässt uns in den Alltag mit einem kurzen Aufsatz zu Gleichnis vom Feigenbaum (Lukas 13, 6-9), dass die Menschen aufruft, uns und anderen Zeit zu lassen. Dabei zitiert er den jüdischen Philosophen Martin Buber ("Wer vertraut, wird nichts beschleunigen wollen.") wie auch den christlichen Mystiker Meister Eckhart ("Mit Gott kannst Du nichts versäumen"). Ein schöner und versöhnlicher Abschluss.

Ausgehend von Psalm 91, 5 (dass du nicht erschrecken musst vor dem Grauen der Nacht) macht Franz Kamphaus Mut sich der Nacht zu stellen, denn nur wer in die Tiefe geht und die Tiefpunkte des eigenen Lebens und der geschichtlichen Situation zu durchschmerzen wagt, der wird ganz werden. Haben die neuen Rechten es je gewagt, sich den Gräueln der Nazizeit persönlich auszusetzen?

Selig, ihr Armen, denn euch gehört das Reich Gottes. (Lukas 6, 20) Armut und ihre Bekämpfung sind zentrale Thema im Denken und Handeln von Bischof Kamphaus. Aber es geht nicht nur um materielle Armut. Arm vor Gott, und damit selig, sind auch die Empfänglichen, die ihr Herz noch zu verschenken habe, deren Hoffnung noch Flügel hat, deren Liebe noch hungrig ist.

... wenn Dich einer auf die rechte Wange schlägt, dann halt ihm auch die andere hin. (Matthäus 5, 39) Dieser berühmte Satz ruft nicht (nur) zu Gewaltlosigkeit auf. Bischof Kamphaus erinnert, dass Gott genzenlos in der Vergebung und enfwaffnend in der Liebe ist. Jesus ruft uns auf, diesem Ideal nachzustreben und Konflikte nicht durch erdulden, sondern durch ein neues Handeln zu lösen.

This could be the happy end. 1846 Leon and Juliette finally get legally married, 1847 Leon becomes mayor of Monster. In the same year their oldest daughter Virginie gets engaged with Jacobus jun. de Fremery, son of a high standing family. Later they will leave for San Francisco. Leon gives up his property in Charleston and finally settles down with his family in Geerbron.

This is my first intimate encounter with Wisława Szymborska's work. Her poems enthrall me. They are full of symbols and references to the antic world and written in beautiful language. It is hard to move on from one poem to the next, as I always have the feeling of having not fully understood, of having overlooked something essential.

We meet Frank who returns highly decorated from the Korean War, but is afraid to go home. His parents were driven away by a white mob from the Texan property and had to move to his fiendish grandmother who particularly devils Frank's little sister Cee. It is because of her, that he finally moves down to Georgia again.

With the help of his wise teacher Upanitsche Burton earns Hindi and Gujarati to the extent, that he can blend into the local population. He starts losing his identity as a "Firengi". Naukaram finds him a concubine, a mistress of sexual satisfaction (in explicit, but delicate descriptions), whom Burton falls in love with. When she dies, Burton is deployed to the Muslim region of Sindh north of Karachi.

Van der Zijl mentions a painting of Leon's mother Alida that he had commissioned from the Jan Willem Pieneman. I wondered, whether it can be found in the internet. And yes, here it is! As described in the book Juliette and her children can be seen in the background.

We experience the arrival of the British colonial officer Richard Francis Burton in India and his deployment to the city of Baroda. In short chapters Burton narrations interchange with those of his prime servant Naukaram. Naukaram's story is artfully embedded into the discussion with a writer, who shall condense it into an application for a new job. So far very interesting and pleasant to read.
