Dieser Spruch aus dem Buch Jesus Sirach war der Aufruf für Bartolome de Las Casas vom Saulus (Plantagenbesitzer) zum Paulus (Bischof und Fürsprecher der Indios) zu werden. Gilt dieser Satz auch für uns, wenn wir uns Billigkleidung von Primark kaufen, Palmöl dem Kraftstoff zusetzen und Kinderarbeit zur Gewinnung von Coltan für unsere Handys hinnehmen?

Die 1993 anlässlich einer Tagung in Dachau entstandene Auslegung zu Exodus 23, 1-13 könnte aktueller nicht sein. In Zeiten von Fake News und wachsendem Fremdenhass betont sie, dass Wahrheit nicht der Beliebigkeit preisgegeben werden darf. Zugleich erinnert sie an die dem Judentum, und damit auch dem Christentum, innewohnende Achtung und Schutz der Fremden. Ein starker Text.

Vor Jahren (sicher schon mehr als 10) hatte ich diese Buch begonnen. Damals fand ich das Thema faszinierend, tat mich aber mit Trojanows Stil schwer, wobei mir seine Sprachvielfalt durchaus zusagte. Infolge widriger Umstände brach ich die Lektüre nach etwas einem Drittel ab.

Ein GR Leserunde lässt mich einen neuen Versuch wagen. Und wieder fängt mich die exotische Atmosphäre des Buches ein.

In the aftermath of Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion in 1831 South Carolina penalized the education of black and coloured people. This law deprived Leon's offspring from education and social advancement. The situation for his family had become critical. Something had to be done and Leon started to ship his family one by one in close secret to the his mother in the Netherlands.

Verlegt und wiedergefunden!

Im 8. Kapitel befasst sich Bischof Kamphaus mit dem Gebot der Nächstenliebe (Matthäus 22, 34-40) und zitiert Rabbi Hillil Was Dir selbst widerwärtig ist, dass tue auch Deinem Nächsten nicht an. Das ist das ganze Gesetz. Alles andere ist Auslegung. Ist das nicht schon beinahe Kants kategorischer Imperativ?!

Die letzten Kapitel mit Elizabeths Bemühungen die Pfalz und Kurfürstenwürde für ihren Sohn zu retten haben mich wieder etwas mehr für das Buch eingenommen. Ich weiß nicht inwieweit diese Episode der historischen Wahrheit entspricht, aber sie ist eindrucksvoll beschrieben. Reizvoll ist unter anderem das Spiel zwischen höfischem und diplomatischem Protokoll.

Reading about Athansius Kirchner's dragon quest pictures emerge of the "Desolation of Smaug" and Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Stragelove" - entertaining, but this is not what I expect from great literature.

We experience the Battle of Zusmarshausen, the last battle of the 30 year war on German soil. The horror of these events, however, does not speak to me in Kehlmann's words. An impressive peace of literature, however, are the scenes with the "winter king" Friedrich V. of Palatina, his wife Elizabeth Stuart and the Swedish king Gustav II. Adolf.

Thanks to the unfavourable location of his house, right across the penitentiary at the Western outskirts of the city, Leon manages to conceal the nature of his relation to Juliette and their joint children. And we finally learn the outcome of the duel that the whole story starts off with.

Mit der abschließenden Auswahl je eines Gedichts von Mascha Kaléko und vor allem Günter Kunert, meinem Favouriten unter den zeitgenössischen Lyrikern, hat mich Reich-Ranicki wieder ganz bei sich.

Mit den von ausgewählten "Gedichte" von Richard Wagners und Gustaf Gründgens kann ich trotz Reich-Ranickis Interpretation wenig anfangen. Sie sind eher ein Zeichen für die Extravaganz des Editors. Um so dankbarer bin ich für die Aufnahme des Expressionisten Paul Boldts und zweier Gedichte von Bert Brecht, der mir als Lyriker wesentlich näher ist denn als Dramatiker.

Wozu also Gedichte ...? Wir brauchen sie, damit sie unsere Empfindungen und Leiden, unsere Hoffnungen und Ängste bewußt und erkennbar machen. Wir brauchen Gedichte, in denen wir uns wiederfinden können, Gedichte, die sich ... als Spiegel unsere Seele verwenden lassen.

We learn about Tyll's upbringing and the events that let him run away from his home. The book is entertaining on a high level, but so far not much more than a well written history novel, but far from the detail, depth and artistry of Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall".

Leon contracts the Yellow Fever, but ist nursed back to life by Juliette, a slave girl in the household of his employer. He starts his own business as a merchant and consul of the Netherlands. Then the outstanding event happens. He not only buys Juliette from her master, but, in the same act, give her freedom and - after 3 more years - marries her.

The novel starts jauntily with the description of Tyll's arrival and show in a village only to take a very different turn in the end of the first chapter.

Das Reizvolle an diesem Bändchen sind nicht nur die Gedichte, sondern Reich-Ranickis Interpretationen oder vielmehr Auslassungen. Sie tragen nicht nur zum Verständnis bei, sondern haben einen eigenständigen literarischen Wert. Erst vier Gedichte (Walther von der Vogelweide, Paul Fleming und zweimal Goethe) und schon weiß ich, dies Büchlein werd' ich nimmermehr hergeben.

The scene is set: Leon's past in the Dutch countryside, well educated but with little chance for a career, his emigration to flowering South Carolina and his acquaintance with Charleston, its illustrious white society and the cruelty of slavery ("the peculiar institution", as it is officially called) that the wealth is founded on.

Verwirrung der Gefühle: Häufig begeistert bei Stefan Zweig die Sprache. Bei dieser Geschichte ist es der Plot - älterer Professor der nur im Kreise seiner Studenten auflebt, seine deutlich jüngere Frau und der 18jährige Student als Untermieter. Ein klassisches Set, aber kunstvoll ausgeführt und daher spannend zu lesen.

Put on hold after the completion of the Hyperion and the corresponding annotations.

The action on the last pages moves on much more quickly. Alabanda leaves Hyperion as not to stand between him and Diotima. Shortly later Hyperion receives notice of Diotima's death from a fever. Not being able to return to Greece he emigrates to Germany, probably only to give Hölderlin the occasion for a phillipic against his own country. But in the end Hyperion finds comfort in his love for nature.

Jetzt ist nur noch "Verwirrung der Gefühle" offen.

Nachdem ich auf den Geschmack gekommen bin, geht es ganz ohne Lyrik nicht mehr. Selbst, wenn dadurch die Anzahl der gleichzeitig gelesenen Bücher auf acht anschwillt.

Allein schon die "Vorbemerkungen und Bekenntnisse" von Marcel Reich-Ranicki sind herrlich beschwingt zu lesen, vor allem, wenn man dabei noch seine markante schnarrende Stimme im Kopf hat.

The first chapter titled "The Duel" ends with the words "Fire", only to continue the second chapter eleven years before that event. Now, this is what I call a cliffhanger.

Reading in Dutch takes me considerably longer, the more as I try to look unknown words up. Still the proximity to German and my Duolingo self study knowledge gets me through.

This book is a present by a very dear Goodreads friend. It is the 2020 boekenweekgeschenk, a Dutch tradition of a free give away book when you buy another book during the Dutch Book Week. It comes along with a one day free ride ticket on all trains in the Netherlands.

For me this will be my first book, that I read in Dutch. I visited Carleston four years ago, so I am intrigued by the story.

Defeat! The Greek army, made up mainly by undisciplined men is utterly defeated by the Turkish and Albanian soldiers. Devastated Hyperion seeks a heroic death and signs up for the Russian navy. They destroy the Turkish ships. Hyperion is heavily wounded, but survives thanks to the care of his friend Alabanda. During his recovery Hyperion once more experiences the beauty and healing features of nature.

End of the first book which conveys the atmosphere of both time (18th century) and region (South-Eastern Poland, now part of Ukraine) and introduces as a some of the personnel. But it also reminds cases of brutal persecution of Jews based on religious prejudice and calumny.
