What's up with the sudden burst of friend requests from people with nothing in common? They don't look like bots.

I accepted the first two out of politeness, but the third just tipped the scale and I've not only ignored it, but unfriended the last two and updated my profile.

not loving the longass flashback. and I've never understood what the reader's supposed to take from the whole "let me tell you about" / cut to flashback things. clearly no one could believe the teller has conveyed to the listener all the detail, dialog, etc. that's conveyed in the flashback. hell, if someone tried to I'd get up and walk out. ugh.

time for the gloomy bit, i guess

paper books with poor contrast :( overly fine typeface and uneven inking make for some eyestrain. if it wasn't for the footnotes and pictures this would be preferable in ebook

hmmm, that was unexpected. maybe it's fake. on another note, the exposure danger in these historicals is far more nerve-wracking than anything i ever read that's actually trying to be scary.

I'm cringing every time he calls Alice honey, and I'm not really expecting any surprises plotwise, but I like this a lot so far.

I'm getting a bit of an everyone knows they're gay but each other vibe. The writing flows wonderfully though. I'm a bit skeptical about the length, but so far so good.

The Dragonslayer of Merebarton - (5) - Damn. I can't recall ever having read another story of a village dealing with a dragon attack, but I can't imagine a better one has ever been written.

Safe House - (5) - A wizard (not a great one) is sent to a country where wizards are executed to try and extract a natural talent that's been detected there. Very good.

I am going to have a hard time focusing my review on this actual book and not letting it turn into a manifesto on everything wrong with UF and why it is destroying civilization

One: The architecture thing comes off a bit like author indulging a personal interest, but is not as in depth as one would expect of such. Aaronovitch handles this much better.

Two: The arcana "aspect" thing reminds me of Zelazny's Lord of Light. Invoking a comparison to Zelazny is extremely unwise. The comparison will not be favorable for you.

ffs, go read some edgar rice burroughs. learn to write a fight scene.
