Well... this is as far as I made it with contiguous reading. I've gone non-linear now. Skipping ahead to parts that are of more immediate interest. (This is very interesting, and as academic writing goes, it's not nearly as bad as most, but it's still overly wordy and full of references to things I haven't read and using terms I really don't understand sufficiently to get anything out of big passages.)

i mean, I'm kinda an outlier in that I'm cool w lack of/mis communication as an obstacle in m/m novels, but ffs this is just getting annoying. drawing a relationship arc out over a mystery series is surely workable, but there needs to be some movement

ok, so this is nothing like i expected so far. good though

this book is failing so hard. i don't want them to get together, i want penny to die in a fire. dude is in so far over his head. he's drowning, been drowning for years, and none of his friends even seem aware of it, much less stepping up. and he thinks penny's "supportive" lol, wtf. girl has not done a single supportive thing in either book, and now she's all me me me. ugh

This is a weird experience. I'm mostly reading for the mystery, there's hasn't been much of a draw with the characters so far, though looks like pov changes w the next chapter. But... I have seen the movie. Only it's been so long I have only the vaguest impression left over from that and I'm not sure the two significant ideas I have from it are even correct.

Almost didn't make it past the first 10 pages, but I'm mildly enjoying it now.

the writing is very good, and it's pulling off the "obvious to audience while pov char is oblivious" thing pretty well too
