Quite good fantasy. I loved some of the characters, like Inquisitor Glokta, so glum, so pesimistic. Of the only 2 women in the story one is a savage so she's fine as she is, but the other is rude and drunk all the time. How can Jezal be in love with her? Love is blind. :P
The +500 pages aren't justified here. There is not that much happening and only very slowly. I'd have appreciated a map...

“Wait for the signal,” he whispered to himself. “Wait for the signal.”
The guy forgets the signal, forgets there is a signal, forgets he has to wait... rotfl

I've read hundreds of books in English but I think it's the first time I find the word "stood" used in this way. "Murphy was stood in the alleyway exit..." I have no idea if it's right or not but it sounds odd... "Motioned towards the uniforms stood outside the house." **scratches head.

All those bits of information the author needs to explain when he starts a entirely new world should have been economized for the next gazilion books of the series. Instead he tries to be too smart and show he has answers for everything in the first half of the book. And it's tiring. The second half is very good though. With a big wowomgwhat? scene at the end trully imaginative. Quite good.

I pulled the bat from my pocket and pressed a button. The weapon sprang to its full length with a satisfying metallic clunk.
“Freud would have a field day with that.”

There are some scenes here that weren't necessary and are way too long, they slow down the action and make you forget names. I do like inspector Odd Singsaker though.

Sabatini was a historian and he liked to research every detail. He acts as narrator who has found parts of the story in some diaries giving it credibility. It shows. You can feel the heat of the Caribean sun, you can taste the sea, smell those old ships. And this is a great adventure that never lets Blood be still. There is racism and sexism here but this is the 1500s. So it's fitting. Great adventure novel.

On the crest of the dunes behind them, in sharp silhouette against the deep cobalt of the sky, they beheld a tall, lean figure scrupulously dressed in black with silver lace, a crimson ostrich plume curled about the broad brim of his hat affording the only touch of color. Under that hat was the tawny face of Captain Blood.

“Now is she a vixen or am I a fool, or is it both?” he asked the blue vault of heaven, and then went into the shed.

The mystery was fine. But I do prefer when I get some character development, background, something, anything. Like... how old are Father Mateo and Hiro? What do they look like? So annoying to have this blurred mental image of them for all the book.

This was uh... different.A woman dies in a small Greek island. Accident? Suicide? Murder? The local police buries the body and nothing is done about it. One day one man called Hermes comes to the island seeking the truth. He is referred to all the time as "the fat man" (very annoying)
And he does find the truth and dispenses justice. We don't learn who he is but I think.. Wonder why no reviewer has considered..!!:0
