Good writing. Mystery was fine. Loved Nan's character.

"There was an apology from the axe-wielding Hermione, who, according to her mother, was detained in the woods dealing with a very large and troublesome Pinus..."

Impressive how Pratchett can keep up page after page playing with the language and being funny. Very imaginative. The mystery was so-so though. Late to start and not a puzzling one.

Vimes woke in damp and utter darkness with sand under his cheek. Some parts of his body reported for duty, others protested that they had a note from their mother.

This song is one of the most beautiful lullabies ever written. It reminds me of the magic of Christmas in our childhood with our families.

It says something like "The beautiful child sleeps warm on the white sheets. The grandmother says: please sleep my baby, quiet, sleep, sleep..."

‘Oh, Hermione, she may be difficult as she has rather scandalized the family, at least in their opinion.’
‘How?’
‘She’s a lumberjack.’
Vimes thought for a moment and said, ‘Well, dear, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a man with a lot of wood must be in want of a wife who can handle a great big—’

THE GOBLIN EXPERIENCE of the world is the cult or perhaps religion of Unggue. In short, it is a remarkably complex resurrection-based religion founded on the sanctity of bodily secretions. Its central tenet runs as follows: everything that is expelled from a goblin’s body was clearly once part of them and should, therefore, be treated with reverence and stored properly so that it can be entombed with its owner...

Loved the part about the Beatles' fans following them everywhere. Carol-George? Lana-Paul? lol Very good feeling of time and places.
Open ending about some secondary stories in there. I'm definitely reading more of this series in the future.

Mystery was quite good. It doesn't get the 5 stars because of the out of the blue Gilda character.

::rolls eyes::

Right before the Boxer Rebellion, orphan girl taking care of an orphanage in China, all by herself, meets a man on the road who asks her a riddle... This really reads like a tale. Very well planned. Full of coincidences, but so what. The girl's voice is very good. Interesting, coming from a male author. All public story. And some bits of real history included. Couldn't.Stop.Reading. Recommended :)

It's impressive that this first person pov of a seventeen year old girl has been written by a man. It is very convincing.
