This was a complicated plot. Or plots. So many going on and with so many names that I've lost track. It was fine in the end. I think...

These books are unputdownable. Maybe because Devlin doesn't get to sleep either. :D I love these kind of mysteries where characters are well developed and you get to see how whatever crime is being investigated is affecting their lives even if not directly involved. I really hope the author hasn't given up on this series.

This was very good. A very realistic portrait of life (and mostly death) in the Marshalsea in the 1700s. Very scary.
I am sad that the author decided to kill a wonderful character that I was looking forward to meet again in the next 10 books or so. Oh well... Very recommended.

So far, extra cookie points to the author for mentioning some book titled Venus in the Convent as part of her research for 1700s vocabulary :D

I didn't much like the writing but the book was going for 3 stars anyway. Not awesome but not bad either. Until... the DCI and his friend Dr Brightman reach the Big Conclusion. They decide the reason that's driving the murderer is... alopecia. omg!!!! For an instant I thought it was a joke. I read on expecting some laughs... They were serious!.... **takes something for the headache.

I can't find a fault to this book except that it clearly wasn't for me. Oh well.

I never read horror. Had I known this was about some evil demon from the river I wouldn't have bought this book. I'm curious enough so I'll finish it. But I can't say that I'm enjoying it...

So. It was "a" and later "b" anyway. *sigh*
This was a story a little childish for my taste, a faerie tale I guess inspired on the myth of Persephone. Still, I couldn't stop reading. I think good books for children/teens/etc are really good for all ages.
First in a trilogy. One year waiting for more...

When I turn the next page there are 2 options:
"a" happens, fine, I dunno how this is going to go on next. I like unknown.
"b" happens and I'm going to be very pissed because that's so predictable and because I'd have to wait 1 year for the next book. Arg
Grrrr I could always stop right here and wait 1 year :P

“Love potion,” I read aloud. The ingredients were plants and herbs that I’d never heard of – the only thing that was familiar was stallion’s urine. Three drops of the potion were to be served in red wine to the man in question, and it would be at its most potent at the stroke of midnight.

I am not sure what to think of this book. It's most likely the first part in a longer arc running through WWII in France. This was I think an introduction of the players, half drama, half mystery. The mystery does get solved but there is no satisfaction in the outcome. Maybe in the next book? It was well written, setting a pace I wouldn't call slow but relaxed. Or expectant... **puzzled

"When you were a child, did you ever play a game called “Blind Man’s Bluff?” Police work is like that, often. You grope about in the dark, touching things and trying to make sense of them."

The window shutters were closed, and in the dim light his complexion was the colour of damp ash. He sat very still as if waiting to join the portraits of his ancestors on the wall, but his eyes were alert and Lannes knew he was being judged.

These books are so good. Great and complex characters, mysteries that keep you guessing to the last page and even then there is some big surprise you never saw coming. And a few laughs along the way.
My only complain: I'd had loved to see the naked lady statue Oskar got for that fountain instead of the moai head.... :D
More please!
