I really love the drama part in these books. Little Kate calling everybody Dada is priceless. (I know the postman is not amused.) There is a hint of a possible future new relationship between 2 characters that I won't name but omg lol Wait, this is a mystery too. Well, I think the author is really worried about children's security because that fear was the center of the entire book. VG

"Hoffner brought his hand to the boy’s face and drew his thumb across the chewing cheek. Mendy continued unaware and drove in another piece of meat.
It was all possible here, thought Hoffner. His only hope was to find his way to dying before he learned to disappoint this one."
I don't think this book is going to end well :/

Rosa Luxemburg was killed in Jan 1919 but her body wasn't found till May. Of course that created a legend. "She's in Russia" "She's coming back" This book creates a mystery around her missing body and relates the political implications, the complexity of so many offices involved. A little slow at times. Pure drama. It took me most of the book to understand Hoffner's wife. Now I'm curious about the next book...

How he met Truman, Churchill, Stalin, Mao and many others changing history... This wasnt serious of course.. Dunno what to think.

So Allan spent a couple of hours instructing Herbert as to what he should say—just one sentence in Russian, but a very important one: “I am Marshal Meretskov from the Soviet Union—take me to your leader!”
(...)
Marshal Herbert had rehearsed his single sentence endlessly, and now he said:
—I am your leader, take me to … the Soviet Union.

This was most probably inspired by Sussmann. I kept remembering parts of his books. But it's more of a general idea than something specific. Quite good. I'm buying the next book asap.

"Long before that, of course, this was the site of the Temple of the Sun, said to be the place where the god Thoth had invented writing, an act so controversial that he was accused of undermining learning since writing would allow people to appear to know things of which they had no real understanding."

These books are excellent. It's got great characters. It's the right lenght, you dont feel like skimming a line not even once. They keep you wondering to the last page. And even the explanation on the strange title doesn't come till the last chapter. Very recommended.

Hm
When I pick a 600 pages book I expect a lot will be happening. And if the genre is Fantasy I expect some magic along the way or... dunno. The origin of the 13 races of mankind is never explained. In all it was an easy to read story. This is only an introduction to a loooong series. I'd feel more attracted to the next book hadn't one of the characters done some savagery totally out of character...

I'm loving these books: exotic adventures, uncomplicated romance, no histerics or heart flutterings, twists and surprises every page. The only bit that annoys me a little is the author's voice of doom at the end of every chapter ("Had I known...") Then of course you have to read a couple more pages and next it's 3 am....
