Okay...I don't hate the heroine for lying about her eponymous make-believe husband yet...

Oh Anne, I love you so much, but this book is so very sexist and dated now. Also, that cover looks like Doctor Strange And His Amazon Harem, and I don't know what the artist was thinking.

*finds scrap of unfinished letter in deceased uncle's coat w/passing mention of concern for Rachel*

"OMG she's a klepto spendthrift who may have murdered my uncle when he stopped funding her luxurious lifestyle! Clearly I should deal with this by glaring at her and wrestling with my attraction to her!"

Weir is aiming for Anne as the victim of Henry's relentless entitlement complex and inability to take "NO" for an answer. Which probably has some truth to it, but she's being so good that it veers around into unbelievability, and all I can hear in my head is Mona Lisa Saperstein--"I have never done anything wrong in my entire life".

Is it wrong that, while I appreciate the appearances by famous historical figures and the glimpses into American Jewish life in this time period, I keep muttering "C'mon, c'mon, let's nuke some Nazis already!"?

The male protagonist has regretfully fallen into the trap of categorizing his three female friends/classmates as "the hot one", "the sweet one", and "the tomboyishly charming one". On the pro side, none of them have breasted boobily down the stairs yet.

I'm going to hazard a guess that when your protagonist is named for the Muse of Tragedy, and she lives in a colony called "Flying Dutchman", things are not going to go super-great...

Ah, ancient Rome, when we could just feed politicians we didn't like to lions and/or Praetorian Guards. No muss, no fuss.

I had forgotten how very good Laini Taylor is at making you empathize with her protagonists. I went from "Okay, so your name is Lazlo Strange" to "I FEEL YOUR PAIN BROTHER oh gods I can't keep reading SOMEONE HELP MY SMOL LIBRARIAN SON" in less than a hundred pages.

*sighs* Same thing happening here as in Widow's Web. New person comes to town with ties to one of Gin's group, Gin, her friends, and passerby on the street note that the newcomer is shady, but the person with ties will hear nothing wrong about their rediscovered BFF/family member and frolic blithely along with blinders on. Finn, your dad was an assassin, you're better than this!

I swear, if one more character thinks in hashtags...

I appreciate how Sophie is struggling with the issue of slavery, and how her perspective as a 21st-century white woman is slanted just as slavery on Stormwrack (a system of bondage based more on bad luck and poverty than racism) is slanted. She has absolutely no doubt that it's bad, though.

Sophie Hansa is my role model for preparing to wander into another world. Pack a go-bag! Work on your core strength! Take self-defense classes!
