This is one of the *darkest* takes on the Wicker-King/town-with-a-secret theme I have ever read. I am seriously creeped out. Must finish before I go to bed.

In the first 80-plus pages, I have met La Llorona and the genius loci of Austin, TX, and there is a bunyip promised later in the novel. Oh, this is *fun*.

80 pages into Dark Eden, and very pleasantly surprised. It's more reminiscent of Hoban's "Riddley Walker" than anything else, complete with language shifts and a painful, aching awareness of what has been lost. I was expecting a CW-type rebellious-teens-in-space scenario--I like this much more!

God help me, I've already added eight more books to the to-read list.
