Left this one at home today, as I feel it might send the wrong message to bring a book about how incredibly easy it is to poison someone with arsenic to a law office...

I am seriously starting to wonder how Britain made it through the 19th century. There were so many poisonings, I would have just quit eating.

I swear, if this turns out to be one of those Serious Literary Apocalypses where everyone dies at the end just to prove the inherent worthlessness of life in a grim and uncaring universe, I'm going to be annoyed. Oddly, I read post-apocalyptic fiction because I like tales of survival and hope.

This is the alcoholic Southern Gothic romance I never knew I always wanted.

Curses, unexpected library hold! Book must go back, but hopefully it'll circle back to me soon so I can keep reading.

On hold because in the rush to catch our rescheduled flight at oh-dark-thirty, I forgot to toss the book into my carry-on bag. To be finished next week once we're back from vacation.

My goal now is to finish this book to see this snarky dickweasel of a protagonist get his come-uppance. I mean, I'm sure he'll learn moral lessons and become a better person, because this is a YA novel. And also because he literally has nowhere to go but up. What a little jerkass.

Enjoying it immensely, but taking another book to work with me for lunch reading, as we have several clients coming into the office today, a couple of them very staid, and I'm not sure they're ready for M/M SF erotica.

The book cruises smoothly along when focusing on Jonathan, Jed, or Roper, but hiccup-stalls when dealing with Burr and the intelligence people. Or maybe that's just me.

If I hadn't already watched the miniseries and was carrying the mental image of Tom Hiddleston as Pine and Olivia Colman as Burr, I'm not sure I'd keep reading. Especially the character of Burr--Angela Burr in the miniseries was a thousand times more interesting than blustery Leonard Burr in the book.

What? I need something light and frothy today, and a rousing plot of "How dare you wear a cravat that matches my dress, and how dare you be so rakishly handsome?" is right up my alley.

Oh, Dorothea, you're weeping furiously while on your European honeymoon? I WONDER WHY.

Okay, I'm going to have to pause in spots and read other books. I'm not sure I can handle 800 pages of poor life and love choices all at once.

Oh NOOOOOO, Dorothea, do not get hung up on Casaubon. He's an unholy combo of the prof you had a crush on your freshman year in college and the guy who wants to tell you about his Life's Work. Don't get suckered in.

I was in a bad mental place the first time I read this, and so decided to reread because I love Sarah Monette and surely it's not as dark and creepy as my memory insists. Turns out, my memory was completely correct. And oh gods, I want to hug Felix and Mildmay both.

You know, despite the back cover copy and the first couple of chapters going on about Brin and her wishsong being the main character/power in the story, more time has been spent on her brother, Jair, and his use of the wishsong, and his particular quest. Just saying, I noticed.

I came this close to just finishing the book in a mad rush and telling my boss that I overslept or something.

*sighs dreamily* Shahrzad is SO COOL. I am afflicted with adolescent hero-worship just reading about her awesomeness.

These two are going to go at it like crazed bunnies when the slap-slap-kiss sexual tension finally snaps, and I am HERE FOR IT.

*sighs* I'm going to keep reading, because I love the Vorkosigans and also because this book is due back to the library soon, but et tu, Bujold? Is everything I read now going to be somehow about the bio-emotional drive to have kids?

Just had a dose of this with the latest CAnderson, and now Ward is doing it too...the ANGST and SOUL-SORROW that comes of not having a kid (or kids) to complete your family unit is not required. Yes, the couple in question talked it out and agreed that they love each other and are great together anyway, but those of us without the option of a deus ex machina (I can see it coming!) might get frustrated.

Briefly distracted from tragic love story by the mention of several characters going to a Hawaiian/island-themed restaurant--in England, in 1960. Oh gods, I can't even imagine how bad the food must have been and how strong the drinks...

I like Nix. I like Bee. I like Kashmir. I want to punch Captain Slate in the nose, then punch him somewhere a lot more sensitive, then kick him overboard and leave him to the sharks while the rest of the crew go have adventures across time. SERIOUSLY. JERK.

Time to reread before giving the series a try! I haven't read this since I was in high school, should be interesting.
