One thing I can say about this author is he keeps the reader on their toes bc it's these are wildly unpredictable books. For every cliche the plot twist I see coming, theres at least 5 plot twist that I can't predict. Good job Wendig. I'm still frustrated about the whole Wanda story line. But seriously, great job here!

U know I'm betting Wandas not pregnant at all. She's been a bit crazy and obsessed with Carl to an unhealthy level. Plus I think the maize witch did something to her. She did not infect her like the others. Early on the novel, she refers to strange feelings in stomach well before Carl cheated on Gwennie.

Wanda is the only character I don't understand or like in this series and it finally dawned on me why. She's freak'n crazy. Like in the beginning she like that stalker ex girlfriend crazy. Now she's becoming drunk on power crazy. The book is hinting Carl may leave Gwennie for her and he better not!

OMG. I'm realizing now that as short tempered as Cael was, he was somehow Lane's moral compass. Because now that Cael isn't there he's becoming a psychopath. Never would expected this to happen to him like this. I really like Lane. I hope he's not the new villain.

So I can't fall asleep at night unless I read. But I can't continue reading the Heartland trilogy, bc it has me so hooked I won't go to sleep. So it looks like on work nights I might be reading this for a while bc this won't keep me up.

I really struggle to understand Wanda. She seemed to mature & seemed like it might sink in that Carl loves someone else. But no. Bc of this arranged marriage bs, 3 books in, she's willing to go as far as kill herself for a boy she doesn't even know. Is she that needy? Would she be doing this regardless of who it was? Sadly it seems like it.

As much as I like this book, there's a certain scene that's been repeated about 4 times now. Bad guy attacks one character while a second character sneaks up on the bad guy and whacks him on the head to knock him out. It's getting predictable now. Takes away the excitement if I know a good guy is standing around in the background with a blunt object.

I honestly can't remember the last time a trilogy hooked me so darn well. This series is really great. So much better than I ever expected and is on par with the best books I ever read. It's like reading the golden compass or locke & key for first time all over again. It's just a freaking great ride!

Sometimes I hate it when characters get split up in books because the chapters begin to rotate through their seperate journeys. And right now Carl is going through something epic and I want to know what happens next, but to get there I have to read a chapter about Gwennie, then one about Lane, then Balastair and probably Rigo too. And all this time I'm thinking. What's going to happen to Cael?!

Another book to add to my very short list of books with a likable gay character. Most books I've read, the character is defined by only being gay & is for some reason usually sex crazy like some kind a predator. I dunno why this is, but I'm glad I'm beginning to see great characters who happen to be gay instead of gay character only there to be gay. More authors need to do this rather than stereotypes for diversity.

Gwennie and Cael get see each other again! Nice to see a nice warm heartfelt moment before things get worse. Bc things are going to be much worse. Too many secrets and betrayals are at work now.

Really having fun with this series. I will have to dive into Windig s other work when I finish this trilogy. If they are remotely close in the quality of storytelling and imagination in these books, I may have a new favorite author.😀

Wow. Merelda ran away be sure she didn't want to be forced to marry someone she didn't love. Now she's basically a sex slave for a rich man in a floating city. That is pretty darn awful. I hope she can find a way out of this mess.

I have really fallen in love with the fact that the leads in the series are so flawed. Most leads are smart and resourceful. Meanwhile Carl is impulsive, bullheaded, short tempered, and runs in without a plan as Gwennie is unsure about what to do and is bumbling her way through a mess. It baffles me how these two are going to be the heroes by the end, but I can't wait to find out.

So after Vasya worked so hard to imprison bad guy 1 she has to turn around and free him so they can be allies to face off against bad guy 2. A strange choice for the plot. It's clever but also makes me feel like the battle stop bad guy 1 was a little pointless. But maybe it will pay off. Still have over 50 pages to go.

After wandering around in the dark moody land of midnight for nearly 100 pages, the book is picking up again! Yay! I was worried there for a while. I was scared that this might be a terrible finale to a great trilogy.

So In the first book I saw the Winter King as a father figure to Vasya. Now that Vasya is grown up, he is her lover? I know I read the first book a couple years ago, but wasn't she a child when she met him? Maybe Im wrong. But I thought she was. And if that's right, this relationship is strange.

So is Morozko a bad guy now? I see his reasoning behind what he did, but it's still kinda messed up.

I love the 1st two books with their unique historical Russian backdrops and fantasy elements. But so far Vasya has been wandering around in the realm of midnight injured. Right now it doesn't seem to be going anywhere, while repeating a plot point of the first book. I hope it develops into something exciting soon. I hope this book isn't a key down
