So this mystery is going to be all biblical themed with demons, angels, and what not. That's a bit different. Usually it's been fun of the mill monsters.

I do like these books but they feeling a little watered down now. I mean Percy Jackson was a copy of Harry Potter. Kane Chronicles was a copy of Percy Jackson. Then this is a copy of the Kane Chronicles. As much as I love Riordan for making an action heavy version of Harry Potter, I feel it he needs to change things up bc they are all beginning to blend together now.

With Magnus' s love of Falafels, being mentioned over and over again in this series, it makes me wanna eat one. I never had one before. I wonder if they're any good

Still not sure about Alex. An unique diverse character for sure and it really did seem that the character may have some real depth and backstory with the introduction. Sadly as the book goes on the character seems to only be a member of the lgbt community and that is all the depth we get. That should be a side note. Develop ur characters Riordan!

So Magnus and friends are going to just let Heath's dad go crazy from the cursed ring of madness. I get that he's a super jerk and maybe deserves it, but he can hurt so many people too

The further away Riordan gets away from Percy Jackson it feels less epic and more like Saturday morning cartoons. And I'm not complaining. The last three books I read were sad and tragic. I really need something light and fluffy right now.

Well the book just took a left turn to introduce a very colorful character to say th least. I don't know how I feel about this character. It's the sort of character who can hijack the whole book with their backstory which is not a good thing. It it could be handled delicately and turn out to be a good addition. Typically the former happens but I'll hope for the later.

So that scene I was warned about in the book was not as bad I expected. When some told me about the spoiler a week ago, my jaw dropped as they were describing it. So I expected it be something to make my blood boil. But it's not. Lyra fought her way out of the situation. The scene is super unnecessary though. As with the majority of the book, most of it is just unnecessary BS that goes nowhere and is quite random.

I see where Pullman is taking this. And see every once and a while a strong scene that makes me realize what he was shooting for. But as someone who loves to write I realize what might have happened. He had a strong vision of where to start and where to end, but didn't know how to get there. Seriously I think he's trying to force something to work to get from A to B. It explains all the uneventful traveling with Lyra

I am still trying to figure out why this is rated so highly. I know the fandom for this series is strong. I'm a huge fan myself, but I never been so disappointed and I'm not going to lie to myself to pretend it's good. So what are other people seeing in this? Is there some hidden genius story I'm not seeing? Or r people just overlooking everything bad bc of the nostalgia of the old books?

If this was about Malcolm as a Oakley street spy and followed his adventure against the magisterium that would be fun. This book taps into that fun element at points and it makes me wish the book was just that. Bc Lyra's character and so called adventure here is just kinda terrible . Makes me wish Pullman left Lyra alone and made the story all about Malcolm.

I'm realising something else. In the HDM trilogy the settings were so unique and full of detail and character I remember all of them from Bovangar to the bear kingdom to haunted city in book 2. But here Lyra has traveled through multiple countries and I realize there's been no real detail to any of them. They're different only in name alone. It's really adding to the blandness.

I miss Lyra. The real Lyra. I refuse to believe a girl like Lyra would grow into this woman. Yes we leave a lot of things behind in childhood, but our personalities stay in tact. The curious remain curious. The goofball still will crack jokes in their adulthood. And so on. The traits are more nuanced but they are there. I recognize nothing in Lyra.

So is this what adulthood is to Pullman? A world of broken people, sadness, and tagedy? Is that why in his past novels, he focused on children and their wide eyed wonder, b/c all the glee and goodness is gone afterwards? I hope not. But this book is so depressing, I'm beginning to wonder if this author is okay. Its such a far cry from everything else. Why would he do this to Lyra, or the great world he created?

Ok, I'm 2/3rds in now and I think I can officially call this is a disappointment. It's just not good. It feels like cheap straight to dvd sequel to a classic film. It just seems aimless and doesn't come close to high bar of Pullman 's previous novels. Also why does Lyra have to be so bland and unlikable now? I was hoping she would begin to get her sense of adventure back at this point or something.

Half way through and this book is not nearly as compelling as the original trilogy or vol 1. Feels more like a spy novel than the golden compass. But the mystery is intriguing. And I'm curious about what Lyra will figure out even if her motivation is weak. I mean seriously she's heading Asia bc of a dream. Very strange reasoning to travel half the world to a dangerous place.

I thought these books of dust were going to be companion pieces to the original trilogy. But now vol 1 and 2 are connecting so well and it seems to be building up toward something that I'm thinking this might be a new trilogy. If so I hope it ends with Lyra being re connected with Will. As a fan of the original trilogy I would just love for those two to have a happy ending together.

I don't know what to think of this book. As much as I love to read about Lyra again, now all grown up, it seems slow and not all that engaging so far. Also what is the deal with Lyra and Pan? They two halves of one soul. How in the world can they be mad at each other? Yet somehow they are.

OMG. The way Lyra is talking and acting is beginning to remind me of Mrs. Coulter. It makes a little bit of sense seeing how she is her mother, but she was also a evil woman who cut apart children souls. I hope Lyra isn't evil. I'm having enough trouble with grown up Lyra as is.
