He is more honest about his failings than I would be - or could it be he doesn't see his drinking, miserly tendencies, and debauchery as failings?

It makes me shudder to think about the crazy way we appoint our leaders. Have learned from the past?

So much to love about Laura's writings, her honesty and down-home approach to life. No apologies for being a strong woman who loves her home-life. Very cool.

Here the history of Charles the II and Samuel Pepys meet - interesting to see the same history from two very different vantage points.

Laura's obvious pride in being a profitable as well as hardworking homemaker is refreshing.

And then she gets a job as a speechwriter for President Bush...and has to make a hard choice...

Powerful honesty when describing her father's slip into dementia. Very inspiring.

After learning about all his failed attempts to take the throne - and then it is practically handed to him - but he's rather busy having affairs...one has to wonder at the fate of kings and those ruled by them.

If it weren't for the fact that Pepys was so blindly honest about his dark side, I would find him to be simply creepy. He can't see that treating women, children and animals as objects is wrong. Personal choice or environment?

Good heavens, how this man ever managed to become king after so many failures and set backs is one of the mysteries of the universe.

Great descriptions and character development. I love their accents.

My how I would have loved to have a cup of coffee with this woman - just to have chatted about our lives - not so different despite the years.

Wonderful to hear Laura's voice again, but this time speaking directly to the "woman of the house".

Growing up in Milwaukee, I am intrigued by Colleen Campbell's perspective.

I'm really enjoying this story - great descriptions and the voice sounds so real.

Very creative, as usual. I appreciate how each of the characters stays true to his or her own voice. Not an easy feat for an author.

So far, so good. I gotta get used to reading with a Scottish accent though...

When Samuel Pepys watches a public execution and still manages to go out to eat, I couldn't help but wonder how cold his heart had become. But by the end of the week, after 10 executions, he seems to be feeling some real grief. Was it not safe to feel? Or did he really have an unimaginably hard heart?

Interesting background I never knew about the author. Beautiful thoughts in a world that seriously needs to remember what makes us beautiful.

True to life but sad commentary on the misguided attempts by people to "change the world" - with little thought of God. Lost innocence...

Sooo glad I wasn't born into a royal family. Crazy making...

Though i really want to like Samuel - it is pretty obvious that his morals are rather porous... "Get what you can while the getting is good." Seems to be the thinking of the day.

I'm only on page 29 but we've whipped through quite a bit of history already. I'm hoping it slows down a little and focuses on the man, as a man, not just in context of political history.
