I haven't been able to read as much of this book as usual, as I am editing a manuscript for a friend, but the conflicts continue. I am more amazed than ever that our country survived the initial trials and tribulations. Personality conflicts have done so much needless harm. Backstabbing and bickering destroy the high moral tone politicians take. History shows whether anyone really believed their words.

I must admit, though Hamilton's judgment was sometimes overthrown by his impulsive nature, the man was brilliant, held honor dear, and certainly loved his family. I find it easy to forgive his mistakes knowing that he sincerely repented them. Other founding fathers have left me cold...and rather sad. Their bickering attitudes never end well.

A pleasant read, though this book in the series actually had a more serious theme where characters encountered true evil. It is the way the characters handle the stress of facing good and evil that makes the book so palatable. Not everyone responds well to stress, but here, the characters are like real moms and grandmothers, friends, and neighbors. They carry on and care anyway... Well done.

Sad story—but it does reflect the possibility that humanity might destroy itself. Lots of deep points to consider—uncomfortable because the author, through the characters, asks really hard questions. Do we ever have the right to take a life—our own or others? What are we called to as human beings? Can we rise above our worst selves? Important points to consider if we hope to escape the fate Miller suggests.

I don't think I will ever get used to how astonishing this man was and the enormous influence he had on our early nation. Strange how the first administration was full of high ideals and then a creepy self-interest and bully philosophy started in with the two-party system. Really sad since it has haunted our national steps ever since.

Definitely a serious collection of stories that take the reader into the interior world where people think, feel, and live out the mystery of their own existence. I'm on The Devil in the Desert by Paul Hogan, and it really brings home to me how different living in the Southwest is from the Midwest. Funny how setting actually forms us as people.

I like the character conflicts in this one the best of all the series so far. Surely, even the best people in the nicest neighborhoods find themselves in conflict. And then what? Apparently there are adult ways of handling problems. Nice to know.

Very different sorts of stories in this collection. Frankly, I'm not sure I understand all of them. What does that say when a story is so deep you have no idea what's really going on? Is that like a joke that needs to be explained?

A lot of very dark possibilities for humanity shown here. But then, that is what great artists show...a glimpse of what might be...if we are not very careful. And caring.

I'm not nearly so amazed and concerned by today's political turmoil after reading about our country's foundation in political warfare. Personal differences, hysterical judgments, end-of-the-world scenarios have been around a long time. No one is perfect, but some people are more honorable than others. Time will tell and the truth will be clear. At least for those who look back and see.

It just goes to show that the best human beings are human after all. This look into the life of Alexander Hamilton reflects the heights and depths of human drama and how our country is more than the sum of its parts. There must be grace—or nothing makes sense.

Okay, I'll admit it‚ I am highlighting parts of this book. It was a used copy and the previous reader (I have no idea who) underlined parts. I find his or her notes almost as interesting as the story itself. Lots to think about. Wonderful when a book sparks pondering between souls who never met.

A friend suggested this book since we are both interested in the spiritual journey and the human experience. It took me a while to get into the science fiction, dark future setting, but now that I've gotten to know the characters, the history, and the world, I see why she recommended this story. It has a lot to say about what is...and what might be.

With each chapter, I am amazed once again that our nation survived its birth pains. Hamilton was certainly a genius with extraordinary vision. Ironically, he made a great number of worthy enemies. Perhaps that is one of the great things about our country? That we do argue and discuss in heated tones our profound thoughts and deepest fears. Into the light, hope is born.

Slow reading but the world in Hamilton's lifetime never seemed to slow down! He sped through historical landmarks like a modern-day superman. Lots of ironies and a number of contradictions keep him from becoming a caricature of the "good guy." A mix of an inspirational story with a cautionary tale.

Good golly. Sigrid Undset was an amazing woman who lived through spectacular times. Not only in the real world, but in her imagination, based on the Medieval world. Kind of like time travel. She incorporated transcending values in a world that often did not understand what she was doing. Like giving away all her Nobel Peace Prize money. Truly she was a unique soul!

I had no idea! After reading her more famous works, Kristin Lavransdatter among others, I thought I understood the author pretty well. But this biography sheds a huge amount of light on her deep personality and how she could write what she did. Amazing. I actually bought this book for my mother-in-law, who at the same time (coincidently??) happened to buy the exact same book for my daughter—but I'm reading it first.

History teaches more than how our shared past looks but the remarkable reality of how irony plays into our lives. Hamilton lived through amazing contradictions. His ruined childhood, brilliant career, enchanting marriage, turbulent times, and the chaos of human choices makes me aware that what I do—stemming from what I really believe—does make a difference in the world. For good or for ill.

Lord have mercy! It's absolutely astonishing that this country ever got born, survived infancy, and has made it this long. Reading our history and all the political and cultural issues of the day—none easy—I feel better about our current struggles. After all, we've been insolvent, diverse, at war within and without, corrupt and blessedly innocent, heroic, and blind as bats, but yet we still live to see another day.
