I've read this work before, but I get new insights from it each time.

Very engaging story! Science fiction with romance and mystery mixed in.

Though I have no French blood in my—that I know of—I recognize Hugo's struggle to embrace the bright and dark sides of the human experience. His ideals of love are as passionate as his descriptions of the desolation and ruin of the human soul. He reminds me of Tolkien's LOTR description of Frodo's injury. Humanity must accept the tragedy of deep wounds yet live on...and with the grace of God...love on.

There is a reason this book is so good. The characters make emotional sense...they have honest character while not being caricatures of themselves. I can't help but wonder as I meet Graham's imaginary people from a land where my family drew life from the same soil...Do I meet a part of my own self...a collective memory? Are a writer's characters, in fact, a part of all of us?

Brilliant, sensitive, prophetic, clear, detailed, and enormously funny while making me think...and feel. So much. Wow.

Victor Hugo makes it clear that humanity must learn the same lessons over and over, yet some people have souls infused with the divine. Amazing reflection on the human experience.

E. B. White impresses me more and more as I read his work. His writing is intellectually stimulating, emotionally evocative, and extremely funny. I'm getting a front row seat to the WWII era while seeing humanity from a brutally honest yet an inspiring point of view.

Taking my time reading this through, but find it fascinating how well the show matches to the book. The writing details what the show visualizes. I can see why it comes across as such a high quality production. Great story base.

I've been watching the Poldark miniseries and have been very impressed with the quality of the production. I was curious as to how much they took from the actual book so I'm reading the books on the side. So far, I am impressed by the accuracy of the show in keeping the language and style of the book. That may be a significant part of what makes the series so good.

There are so many things to ponder...White's reflection on his own life, farm life, the state of the world, and the human soul experience. Refreshing and uplifting.

Enjoying the detailed descriptions and the characters' voices. A great read.

I am constantly amazed by the breadth and depth of this book. Hugo covers a huge amount of territory—not just French history but the entire landscape of the human soul. Fascinating.

I'm very impressed with E. B. White's insight into our human frailty. His understanding of the country life is humorous and his accounting leaves me breathless.

O Henry has a fantastic vocabulary and uses words like a warrior wields weapons—constant parry and thrust. Amazing.

A powerful story. I'm taking my time and savoring Hugo's poetic use of language.

I am enjoying the thoughtful and balanced approach that Father Kurzynski takes towards faith and science. Dialogue rather than debate makes a great deal of sense.

This is one of the most powerful stories I have ever come across. The characters will stay with me for a long time. Cry, the Beloved Country reveals many complex facets of complex issues and humanity's struggle to endure in a world of strife. Yet it offers hope. That is no small achievement.

I've only started the book, but I hate to put it down and I can hardly wait to pick it up again. This is so well written by an author who knows her stuff. I love the dry wit and immense strength of the Lady Doc.

This is the perfect companion to the actual diaries of Samuel Pepys. It fills in all the background questions and completes a very complicated but fascinating picture of English life in the 1600's.

This is a little hard to understand at moments, but I really enjoy the story line. A profound look into the mind of a woman during the courtship process. Interesting perspective...

A man who wrangles out a deal for a Portuguese wife - for the money - takes on a new mistress really upsetting her husband - and tries haphazardly to protect the poor persecuted Quakers and Catholics... deep sigh....

I find it oddly amusing that Pepys is addicted to going to plays the way our generation can't get enough of the latest movies or games. In generations to come will teachers be adding movies and games to class curriculum?
