I never expected this book to be so fascinating. Herford really nails down the literary elements in the book, demonstrating an extraordinary sensitivity to poetry in general and Robert Browning's work specifically. Lots of food for thought as I consider the personal lenses we all use to express our version of the world we live in.

I love Dickens. I despise Dickens. With every flip of the page, I discover new reasons to admire the man and then throw my hands into the air in despair at the guy. Certainly a mixed personality! Peter Ackroyd's insight and comprehensive review of the man and the culture he lived in is nothing short of astonishing. I'd be scared stiff to have him review my life. He delves into hidden depths and asks hard questions.

Funny and extremely diverse, the story has stories within that have nothing to do with the main story. I never know what I will get when I sit down in the evenings to read.

Dickens understands satire, and he makes good use of it as a social commentary.

What a complicated human being! Now I see why his writing hits the reader from so many directions. He is so multifaceted.

Funny and pointedly ironic, Dickens says a lot in roundabout ways.

Reading his biography while reading his books changes the way I understand his work. At times, I am amazed at his literary genius, while other times I am surprised that he can be so funny when his life had such dark moments. Mostly, I see the contradictions of a person still processing his human journey.

I'm just getting into this book, but already I am seeing the human experience from a wider perspective. There's a lot I don't understand, but even a glimpse into the universe and the hidden forces we are just learning about brings up important thoughts and considerations.

This is a very funny book - a fun escape from the "real world" with lots of great moments.

Peter Ackroyd does an outstanding job of showing what a dynamic, conflicted, and gifted writer Charles Dickens was. His insightful understanding of the time and the environment clearly develops the larger atmosphere. Brilliant insights.

I just read about the inception and development of Charles Dickens' first big work, The Pickwick Papers. So, I had to look, and sure enough, I had a copy in my classics shelf that I had never read. It's amazing!

I love the background in the bio that supplements my understanding of the work.

I can hardly wait to dive into this book. I have so many questions. But I suspect I'll end up with more questions before this book is finished.

Peter Ackroyd offers so many insightful commentaries in this biography that he adds a great deal to the life story of Charles Dickens. At first, I wasn't sure he could share his thoughts without distorting the facts, but I have come to trust his reflections as clear-eyed perceptions. It's a fascinating read.

Peter Ackroyd is a skilled writer in his own right. His historical and cultural lanscape gives the book a clear setting, allowing the reader to place Charles Dickens in his natural environment and consider the person as well as his writing from multiple perspectives. This is a fascinating read.

Hemingway was a powerful writer but this story is not for the faint of heart. Grim hardly covers it. Still, it reminds me of the old saying - "Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it."

It Might Have Been was translated into Portuguese by Norberta Silva. Norberta does fantastic work. Not only did she translate the stories with an eye for the details, but she also added footnotes to help the reader understand more fully. She went above and beyond the call of duty.

I picked this book up on a free rack recently and discovered an unexpected treasure.

Poetry has been sadly underrated in our society, but as Browning makes clear - getting at the "truth of things" is a mystical, spiritual experience that not only forms us but grows us from the inside out.

Great things in life can come in plain packages available on a free rack.

This is not a book about the life of Peter Jackson so much as a walk through his work experience, his growth as a director, and all the moving parts that made up the process of developing his movies. It's an extraordinary look at the process and the challenges he faced. I have a much better appreciation of his audacity, bravery, and skill.

A fascinating inside look at the movie-making business and why it isn't for the faint of heart. It's astounding that the LOTR movie ever got made as well as it did. So many challenges were faced and overcome just to get it started. I still have a lot to read and discover. I'm looking forward to reading more about this astonishing journey.

So, far this isn't what I expected, but an interesting read nonetheless. I had no idea how often the LOTR had been set for production. Must have been a bit heart-wrenching for Tolkien.
