I never heard of many of these writers, but that's not stopping me from loving their work. Unheralded writers or authors lost in time still have a lot of valuable things to say to us today. Pick up a classic and enjoy!

Once again, I appreciate Pierre Teilhard's optimism, but I am frustrated by the sense that he is reinventing a perfectly good wheel. Is he offering a new view of humanity and faith? Or is he clarifying the one that Christ offers us if rightly understood?
I'll keep reading...

Teilhard continues to see the upward spiral of humanity in an ever brighter light. Amazingly, he reflected an optimism of his age that looked beyond world wars and devastation to a whole, happier human future.

I certainly have a new appreciation for writers I never heard of before, but who clearly influenced the world of their day—leading to our world today. Lots of food for thought here. Perhaps we don't see the changes we make, but history reveals what we can't see now, nonetheless.

Interesting statistics that make me realize just why so many people have migrated in various spiritual directions. Perhaps all is not lost but a bit befuddled?

A great look back in time at the thoughts and personal views of history that are clearly missing from current historical texts. Not necessarily more accurate, but certainly interesting to see where we've come from.

Lots going on in this book! I really enjoy the main characters and get a little lost on the side characters. Sanderson's imagination is unparalleled. I hope things get less dark, but then, it's in the dark is when the light shines brightest.

Goodness, Sanderson puts his characters through a lot! The reader too since we are so invested in them. By the time I've read 1000 pages of a story, I feel like they are practically family.

I am reading this book and thinking all the time, what would Teilhard say about us if he could see our world today? His predicted future was very bright—almost Star Trek-like where we all join in the Prime Directive. It's interesting to see what he thought then. Makes me wonder—how far have we, as a human race, come?

This has been a blast to read. Some legends leave me laughing. I enjoy the dry way events are retold. No arm twisting. The reader has to make up his or her own mind. Great stories from Scottish history!

Powerful and very vivid story. I have to sneak the book back from my daughter who is enjoying it too. Says a lot about a book when a line forms to read it.

I find the experiments and conclusions in this book to affirm some of humanity's strongest beliefs. We do better when we are connected for the betterment of all and vice, contrary to virtue, does not pay. Funny how it takes science to make the obvious believable.

A fascinating look at a remarkable life. Amazing what Pierre Teilhard lived through—the trenched of WWI—and yet he kept his spirit positive and hope before humanity. He was a scientist with a passion for research and a priest with a deep devotion to his faith. Says a lot about what hope and faith can do for a person.

Lots of insight into the human condition in this book. All the experiments are scientifically based on our chemistry and biology but affect everything about us as individuals and communities. Really makes me take a good look at both common sense living and the bad habits that bring us all down.

This book is a lot funnier and stranger than I ever imagined. The writing, rather dry but humorous nonetheless, really brings out the contrast of recorded history and the question, "What on earth were they thinking?" alive. Well done!

I'm reading works of Kingclark, who I never heard of before, and Thackery, who I really enjoyed, Beaconsfield, and Lytton...I must say that this book shows me how much passion writers brought to the page to make them classics. Not a passing emotional state, but a love for life, noticing the details of thoughts and feelings. Powerful insight into humanity.

I am pleased that Teilhard de Chardin is so optimistic. Considering what he had to live through—the deaths of so many loved ones and WWI, he had to have a strong inner core supported by something beyond this challenging world.

As much as I love the various characters, communities, and creative worlds, I must say that I get a little frustrated being shifted about so often. I want to stick with one or two lines and follow them through. Emotionally, I feel jerked about when I have to go into the hearts and minds of so many different people so often. Great writing, though, no doubt about that.

I've just started this book, but I am already intrigued by the premise—that humanity is called to a higher state of being. If only we'd answer affirmatively. I'm very interested in Teilhard de Chardin's views on this concept.

Reading the words of such illuminating minds as John Newman, Edward Lytton, and Lord Beaconsfield has been a wonderful way to start the new year. Onward and upward!

I have certainly enjoyed quiet time to read about my Scottish ancestry. Funny how books bounce shafts of shared light off each other. Considering the history of Scotland, such tight-knit, yet in some ways, very isolated communities, I see the intimacy of Home life through the fiction book by the same title and understand the physical and psychological realities embedded in our shared human journey.
