Summer 2012 Rws Completed Tasks

I've decided to work on the Ten Degrees of Separation for this quarter. It's been so fun working on the list. I've enjoyed discovering how folks have rated so many classic books. I've found some new treasures and been spurred to read some older classics I haven't had time to read yet. They've all been great!
Cheers!!

15.1 - 1st book - 5 stars by Leigh and Lisa Sokol
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
At first I wasn't so sure about this one. I loved her other Oxford Time Travel books, but this one just didn't grab me at first...but I should have been more trusting -- it was HILARIOUS and fascinating, one of those books I was scheming ways to read more ("Hmmm, if I get in the long line at the grocery store I could read more while I wait"). One of the rare books that made me literally laugh out loud.

Task Total: 10 + 05 + 05 = 20
Grand Total: 310 + 20 = 330
Review: Iris Murdoch keep a tight focus on character in this novel about an Anglo-Irish family living through the week before the Irish Easter Rising of 1916. The men all seemed realistic as people; the women, not so much. Ms. Murdoch writes as an Englishwomen trying to be fair when discussing those strange Catholic Irishmen/Irishwomen. Well-written but irritating if you don’t agree with Ms. Murdoch’s opinion of the Irish “Troubles”.

D-I apologize, I made an error when entering your last post. I missed a 5 point combo, it will be corrected in the next Readerboard update. Your score of 310 is correct.

The Jewish War by Flavius Josephus
I had this book for a while and after reading The Dovekeepers I decided to learn more about the era. My Goodness! There has NEVER been peace in the Middle East! Siding with Syrians to fight Greeks, fighting with the Egyptians to fight Syrians, Babylonians, Persians, Samaritans, the Jewish Kings but even worse duting all this, often the Jews were killing their own countrymen. The book ends with the choice to overthrow Roman oppression which was strongly advised against by King Agrippa, putting his life at risk. Then different factions within the rebels decided to make war against one another. Unbelievable! I've never been there but is that strip of land really work the centuries of war and hate and neverending suffering.
+10 pts - Task
+10 pts - Not a novel
+10 pts - LiT (orginally written in Aramenic, there are no more left in that language. However, Josephus decided to translate his own work to Greek because he was afraid the rest of the world wouldn't know what happened. The Englsih translation is taken from the Greek edition)

As long as you don't count on me for addition! I'm notorious for giving the moderaters more to do by correcting my math errors! (smile)

I love the strategic readers idea. I'm surprised I made it on the list at all, though, because this summer my strategy has been usurped by library holds and due dates and books that were underrated when I picked them, but are quickly reaching toward 250;). I got carried away with the "hot new releases" list I think!
