Did anyone else see the news story about Starbucks using ground up bugs for the pink coloring in their Strawberry Frappuccinos?"

I just heard about this! WTH....don't they know what's in their coloring before serving it to their customers? Luckily, I'm not a starbucks drinking type of gal. I lived in seattle for 7 years, so I'm kind of a coffee snob. So, I only go to starbucks if I'm w friends who want to meet up there.

Just think...this could have been our chance to meet! Where are you sitting anyway? I would have gotten tickets on the lower level by 3rd base (our league reserved 200 tix in this area.)

message 853: by Leea (new)

Leea We have crap seats... $7 each. haha! I've never been to an A's game, only Giants.

kay, you're right about Starbucks. I like Peets coffee better but we don't have one here.

I've heard about the coloring controversy. I just don't drink those kinds of drinks. Too many calories.

message 854: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I like Peet's too! Sometimes I'll order online from Cafe Darte (my fave coffee beans from Seattle!).

I've never been to a Giants game. Only A's game...we've always been an Oakland A's fan since I grew up in the East Bay. It's an old stadium so it's not nice like AT&T Park. The A's are planning on moving to Fremont though...which I think is horrible. I wonder if they will change their name to Fremont A's...this just doesn't sound right.

message 855: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I don't drink them either. But weirdly enough, it doesn't bother me.

We do buy a cow locally, so no pink slime in our cows -- I think that is so gross.

message 856: by Leea (new)

Leea The bugs don't bother me, it's all natural. haha!

I have been looking into buying half a cow or going in with a few friends to buy one and share it.

The pink slime is disturbing. I just want safe food for my children. ugh!

message 857: by Leea (new)

Leea Regina & Wendy,

Special Forces tomorrow :)

I'm going to put aside Shadow Reader... I don't have enough time.

message 858: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Apr 20, 2012 03:34PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I've been to a ton of A's games and only 1 Giants game.

Pink Slime is disturbing. Especially since they use ammonia to process it. But who knows...maybe they do that for all meat and I just don't know.

It happens Leea. There's no way to fit in everything. I am chomping at the bit to discuss the book though. At least Kay's keeping me company for now. :)

message 859: by Leea (new)

Leea I feel bad. I've watned to read it for awhile.

message 860: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Most local farms will you allow you to do a 1/2, 1/4 or whole. We do a 1/2 and it lasts us 10 months. In illinois there is no shortage of cows!

message 861: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'm down for special forces tomorrow. I'll finish Fear tomorrow morning.

Are we reading it in sections (Soldiers, Mercenaries 1, Mercenaries 2, veterans) as it was originally written are just reading it as one long book?

message 862: by Leea (new)

Leea Special Forces - Soldiers (Special Forces, #1) by Marquesate is the one I have loaded on my nook, I hope it's the right one?

message 863: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I won't be able to join you all tomorrow. Sorry.

message 864: by Leea (new)

Leea You want us to wait for you?

message 865: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I would prefer, but I don't want to pressure you -- it is up to you. Next week?

message 866: by Leea (new)

Leea You know it's fine with me... Wendy?

message 867: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Of course I'm down with waiting! I mean, I was the reason we didn't start last weekend, hahahaha. We're waiting for you Regina. :)

Leea, that's the first one, Soldiers. I have them all, so I was just wondering what the plan was.

message 868: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I don't know how you people with kids do it.

I went to watch The Hunger Games with my sister yesterday and although it was very close to the book, I thought it was way too sanitized. The music also sucked, not at all appropriate.

I guess that's how they got that PG-13 rating!

message 869: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) I am readingDaring the Highlander

message 870: by Leea (new)

Leea Julie, how is it so far. I have a soft spot for Hightlander Romance :)

Did you read the first book, Charming the Shrew (The MacLeods, #1) by Laurin Wittig ?

message 871: by Julie (new)

The year is 1309, castles, wars, alpha males. What's not to love? I have not read the first one. I just put it in my TBR list. I never manage to read these in order. I also love those Highlanders!

message 872: by Regina (last edited Apr 22, 2012 06:30AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) I finished Shadow Reader. I feel like I did with the Guild Hunters book. I was going into both expecting a really strong urban fantasy book, but it isnt -- the main struggle is the romance. Which is fine, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. Also, as to the romance, I couldn't buy into either of her love interests. I didn't see it developing at all with (view spoiler) What I saw was an incredibly sexy guy and she was attracted to him and he her, but when did they develop love? Suddenly he was possessive but there was no build up to a relationship. There was sexual tension and his (view spoiler) but that was it. I don't see where either feel in love beyond lust. So to me that just not well done. I was thinking of other books where two people don't hit it off int he beginning but slowly over time it develops and I completely buy into it -- Seth and Georgia are great examples, also Mac and Barrons, Kate and Curran, Adam and Mercy, oh and Cat and Bones and those are just the ones that come to mind. I do think the author wrote well and wrote an incredible world so I liked it. I just wish one of two things - either the struggle was not romance/love triangle based or if it was based in romance than go whole hog and develop a convincing relationship that involves more than flashing skin.

Oh, and Yeah (view spoiler) to make her wait 10 years. And I liked that the author had both of them mourning the relationship. However, I thought MacKenzie's fip flops to be irritating especially since they weren't based on facts of her own. For 10 years (view spoiler)

So those were my problems. I liked it, I liked the characters, I liked the world, and I really enjoyed the beginning. I do think this should be labeled paranormal romance or romance based urban fantasy though. I feel bad not loving it sense everyone else does -- so for me it is Guild Hunter all over. I felt the exact same -- it didn't read or feel like urban fantasy at all and I didn't buy into the emotional part of the relationship (I did buy into their lust though).

message 873: by D.G. (last edited Apr 22, 2012 06:35AM) (new)

D.G. I finished it as well, Regina and I completely agree with everything you said. I didn't understand how (view spoiler)

I also didn't like at all how she seemed to be making such important decisions as to which side to fight in a war based on emotional attachments. A person that can be manipulated with feelings is VERY dangerous and I really wish that the author would have had (view spoiler)

I did like that the story was not black and white (both sides were doing terrible things) but I wished that McKenzie had questioned the rebels argument that the weakening of their magic was cyclical. What proof did they have for that?

message 874: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) DG, exactly. (view spoiler)

That would have been great -- to show that she made the wrong choice or to somehow draw out that (view spoiler)

message 875: by Regina (last edited Apr 22, 2012 12:16PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) So I am reading Sunrise Point (Virgin River, #19) by Robyn Carr it is the last in the series :( (although I still have Harvest Moon to read with Leea -- #15), it is to be released on Tuesday, and it is really good so far.

I am halfway through the audio of The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel and I am surprised at how much I am liking it.

After I finish Clan, I am going to start either The Boy Book A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them (Ruby Oliver, #2) by E. Lockhart Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black Harvest Moon (Virgin River, #15) by Robyn Carr I have these in audio and in text, so I am not sure if I will be listening or reading.

Regina (reginar) That cove is hot.

message 879: by Leea (new)

Leea Yeah that's a hot cover for sure!!

I haven't read in the last few days. We've been too busy. I might star Harvest Moon when we get home.

Regina, last in the series... No more?

At the Oakland A's Game right now. It's beautiful here today, upper 70's perfect for a ball game :)

message 880: by D.G. (last edited Apr 22, 2012 02:10PM) (new)

D.G. Regina - Let me know if you're going to start White Cat (Curse Workers, #1) by Holly Black . I have it in print too so I can start it next.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Regina and D.G. I had the same exact issues with the love triangle. The only reason I was a bit more forgiving was because of the (view spoiler)

I haven't had time to read much over the weekend but I did start Confessions of a Prairie Bitch How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated by Alison Arngrim and it might be interesting, too soon to tell.

I also started Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin which is really good so far. Something about it is reminding me of Angelfall but I couldn't tell you what.

I promised I'd read that one soon for a friend. Good to hear it's working out for you.

message 883: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Stacia - That was the reason I ended giving up the book 4 stars. I liked that (view spoiler)

message 884: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma by Tabitha Suzuma and now I'm reading Hot Six (Stephanie Plum, #6) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

message 885: by Leea (new)

Leea Ellie, how did you like Forbidden?

Sorry, I bailed out on The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams I really wanted to read it.

message 886: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Leea we will hold it against you! ;)

I can't start White Cat and Harvest Moon at the same time, so I think I will do Harvest Moon first -- DG can you wait until Tuesday or Wednesday for White Cat?

message 887: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments I finished Enemy Mine (Alpha and Omega Series, #2) by Aline Hunter and Suddenly You by Lisa Kleypas this weekend. It was nice to pick up a Lisa Kleypas historical book after so long. I may read another one of her books soon.

I want to read White Cat too. I might join you ladies.

message 888: by Leea (new)

Leea Can I read White Cat with you ladies? I've had it loaded on my nook for a year. lol!

Kay, I got so sun burned at the game today it was so hot. I even put 50 sunblock on. Yikes! I loved Suddenly You, on of my favorites!!

message 889: by Aestas Book Blog (last edited Apr 22, 2012 08:58PM) (new)

Aestas Book Blog (aestasbookblog) | 7 comments just finished Bared to You (Crossfire, #1) by Sylvia Day OH. MY. HOLY. FREAKING. GOD. THIS. BOOK. IS. AMAZING.

This book was absolute perfection for me!! I just finished reviewing it but it had me swooning, drooling and panting over Gideon Cross and had me reading for the better part of it with the world's biggest grin on my face. It was the perfect blend of heart warming, HOTNESS , seriously tortured hero (and heroine).

Gideon has just been bumped up to my #1 book guy (tied with Alexander of course)...

message 890: by Leea (new)

Leea I added it to my TBR list... Loved your review :)

message 891: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 1216 comments Leea, it was a hot one today also but not as hot as yesterday. Did you have fun at the game?

I just picked up Caine's Reckoning (Hell's Eight, #1) by Sarah McCarty . I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

message 892: by Leea (new)

Leea It was fun but there were a ton of people and we the boys only made it till the 5th inning. lol! It was so much fun but you would have had to hold the baby for a long time. When they walked the field it took forever.

Western... What don't you like about it?

That's fine, Regina. That will give me a chance to finish Crossed (Matched, #2) by Ally Condie and Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastard, #2) by Scott Lynch .

I went to sleep at 1am last night listening to Red Seas Under Red Skies. I don't know how that author comes up with those situations, it's been so freaking exciting.
