Name some of the books you remember reading in school, it doesn't have to be just High School either. Just a fun topic for everyone to remember the School days with reading :)

MeMe Belikova First lady Ivashkov (alicebelikovreads) | 949 comments In grade school I grew up reading and loving the Amelia Bedilia books Come Back, Amelia Bedelia (I Can Read Book 2) by Peggy Parish they were so funny and I just love the good nature of the books. I don't believe I have read all of them but I plan to go to the library and dig for some of the books :)

I remember reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling in the fifth grade, It's such a vivid memory because I remember looking me and Tt searching for it in our elementary Library and being so excited about it lol and my Harry Potter obsession started from there!

OMG I feel bad saying this but I thought it was EXTREMELY BORING! I couldn't get into it and the language was sooo confusing, i still don't know what its about but luckily I'm good at scanning so I didn't fail any quizzes on this book ha!

No, I think those ones are newer. I haven't read any of his books in a while. Are they good?

MeMe Belikova First lady Ivashkov (alicebelikovreads) | 949 comments Yes, I believe it's the newer ones by Christopher Pike and YES they are good. I've only read the first one back in 09 but have the second book sitting and waiting on my shelf :/ If your into the whole Vamp thing you should like them.

Cool, I would say you can get a head start on these books but times have changed. In English class we would read a lot of Shakespeare like Romeo Juliet but know teachers are assigning books like 'The Hunger Games' which is so funny and crazy to me but I guess things have to change at some point.

I can't remember books we read for school. Obviously nothing that made a huge impact on me :)

I remember reading Old Yeller by Fred Gipson and Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls ...both excellent books.

Tammy | 291 comments For assigned reading we had to read Ivanhoe by Walter Scott The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne The Jungle by Upton Sinclair , which I kinda liked. I hated Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra .

For fun, I read stuff like The Last Vampire (The Last Vampire, #1) by Christopher Pike The China Garden by Liz Berry Interview with the Vampire (Vampire Chronicles, #1) by Anne Rice

Alana read a lot of the same books as me :)

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 374 comments That's all I can think of right now... there's plenty more. Some were for fun, others for school. Of the school ones, a few I loathed (Heart of Darkness) and some I adored (The Martian Chronicles).

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 374 comments Harry Potter and Twilight weren't written yet when I was in High School...

Are the secret circle books any good Alana? Im loving the t.v. series and would love to read the book once I can get to 'em

message 29: by Karina (new)

Karina Kantas The only books I remember reading and loving were S.E.HINTON'S YA novella's such as the infamous OUTSIDERS.

It's because of books such as Tex, Rumble Fish and That was then this is now, that I became an author. After reading all her books I couldn't find anything remotely similar.

There's was me thinking I'd found a whole in the marketplace. Well I have, unfortunately, it's still a unknown genre that agents won't take a chance on.

Maybe one day........

message 30: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Wilson (StorytellerTDW) | 53 comments I remember it was in high school in the library were I saw my first book on chess. It had never dawned on me that there would be books to help you learn how to play better.
My mother taught me to play but never let me win, ever. Looking back I am glad of that. I read every book on chess I could get my hands on during high school until I could beat my mother playing chess.

The only down side is I have a real problem losing at anything! Bad enough my wife says I need therapy about this and she refuses to play certain games with me because I am such a sore loser, if I lose!

I loved them in HighSchool... have reread them several times. Now that I'm 35... not quite as good as they once were... but still a solid 4♥'s for me. It is YA, but it's sweet.

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 374 comments Oh... I HATED A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

PrincessJahnavi | 1 comments does anyone know any good books to read that are by american authors and are written between 1800-1899

I have to read one for english but I don't want to be stuck with a boring book!!!!!!!!

message 40: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) Princess, when you say 'good' you mean...? Lol. I'm asking because I've picked out books for my daughters and they complain about how boring they are!

I'd suggest The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.

When I was in high school, I read *a lot* of Stephen King. The Shining had just been released, and I devoured it! I also enjoyed John Saul, Dean R. Koontz, and Ray Bradbury.

I would second Tom Sawyer.

I haven't read The Scarlet Letter and had a hard time getting through Little Women. I plan to try reading that one again sometime, though.

message 43: by Lori (new)

Lori Strongin | 19 comments I couldn't even remember all the books I read in HS, there were so many both for school and for personal choice. But some of the really memorable ones were Interview with the Vampire (Vampire Chronicles, #1) by Anne Rice , Time's Arrow by Martin Amis , Frankenstein by Mary Shelley , A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare , The Dark Is Rising (The Dark Is Rising, #2) by Susan Cooper , and my favorite book to this day, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger .

I also remember absolutely loathing Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell .
