Interesting challenge. I think the most challenging part will be remembering what's what and posting regularly.Can we use library books for this challenge? And if so, which category? I'm thinking owned since we don't have to pay for them.

Hi, Barbara & Josie. I was only considering bought or owned for this challenge. But, you're welcome to track those read, but borrowed separately, if you'd like.
The goal of this one was to read as many owned books as purchased books in 2012. Library books and those borrowed don't really fall into either, but are closer to owned in that no $ was spent on them.

Hi, DG. Sorry 'bout that. I had thought we could use either | / or \ to show the balance between our "purchased & read" and our "owned & read" #s. For example, if I've read 2 purchased and 1 owned, my scale status would look like this: 2/1. The straight dividing line would reflect that we've read an equal number of each. It's not important, or required, so feel free to just ignore it if you wanna. :)
I'm so happy ya'll are joining in on this one. I'm sure my scale will be seriously unbalanced, but at least I'll have this challenge to push me to read what I already own. :D

I'm totally in. I tried not buying any books this year which lasted till October, then I brought 51 books in two weeks. I'm not doing that again!

I tried a variation of this last year - trying to make sure that I read more books than I bought. Problem was I stopped counting when the number of books I bought was more than double the number I'd read!!!

Steph - one more question.....I belong to PBS and get 1/2 to 2/3 of my books from there. In the games I send out a book and receive a book, so the only "cost" is postage. Occasionally I'll get a book posted to my WL, so that costs me a credit.
Should those books from PBS be counted as purchased or owned?

Think you can 'balance' your book purchases with the money saved from reading books in your existing TBR stack?
No math needed. Instead, let's tally the number of books we read this year ~ Books purchased & read v. Books owned & read in 2012.
Goal: By the end of 2012, your 'owned/read' stack should be larger or equal to your 'purchased/read' stack. If so, challenge completed successfully. If not, well, there's always next year! ;)
Note: For this challenge, "owned" books include those purchased no later than 31 Dec 2011. If you pre-ordered AND paid for a book prior to the end of year, but received it (by post) after 1/1/2012, it counts as 'owned', not 'purchased' in 2012.
Additionally, members are welcome to include ANY books (even those outside of the PNR/UF genre), if they'd like to get an accurate total for the year; that is totally up to each participant. Therefore, all formats are allowed; re-reads are allowed (and count as an 'owned' read).
