What Did You Finish Reading/What Are You Currently Reading?
I also hated The Alchemist. (Pretentious new age mumbo jumbo.)Finished The Pickup by Nadine Gordimer last week. I suppose her favored themes (culture clash!) are award bait. And I enjoyed some of the plot and the evolution of the female main character, but I couldn't stand her run-on sentences.
Just finished two rereads (friend gifted me books for Christmas, yay!): A Fabulous Creature by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (now that I'm older, I find the "romance" to be rather destined to end in deep lifelong friendship and less weird/random/squicky) and Hexwood by DWJ (third time reread and I'm not entirely sure I understand this book *more* each time- DWJ plots are hard to explain, but this one's probably the most- Arthurian myth/aliens/dragons/eugenics/oligarchy/magic)
I finished Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko yesterday, and although I didn't love it, I did think it was an incredibly beautiful book. I'm continuing on with The Book of Lost Things, which I am LOVING, so maybe that goes to show how much of a little kid I am at heart!
I just finished Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence today. For a book that has a lot of sex in it, it is incredibly boring!

Just finished Gemma and now on to another book that I won via the GR giveaways--Letter to My Daughter. I'm trying to catch up on all the books I won.
I'm reading Wide Sargasso Sea. I'm sorry to say I'm finding it not that engaging. It's only 112 pages but I don't know if I want to continue. Thoughts?
I read Bi America: Myths, Truths, And Struggles Of An Invisible Community and The Sexual Spectrum: Exploring Human Diversity yesterday, both were facinating!
I haven't read Wide Sargasso Sea, Tahleen, but when I studied English, most of the people hated it.
I'm reading Fat Is a Feminist Issue now, it's really interesting...

Tahleen, Don't continue. Life is too short to read something you're just not that into. Put it down; maybe in a few months, it will be the right time for you to read it.
Oh and I'm putting down Swann's Way. I love it, but it's just not doing it for me. I can't get motivated enough to drop everything and read it and when I do read a bit, I just can't concentrate. I'll find something else.
I am currently reading:- Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 1-4
- Sheila Fitzpatrick's The Russian Revolution
- Herbert Butterfield's Whig Interpretation of History

I should follow this more often. I always feel the need to finish a book I've started. I'm about to finish The Beautiful and Damned, which often felt like a chore to read.
**SPOILER** Thanks Lori, usually I would follow your advice but I trucked on and have about 20 pages left. I'd feel ridiculous if I stopped now. Plus, soon she'll be in the attic and I want to see what she says at that point. (It's a book about Bertha Rochester from Jane Eyre, about her life before the attic and how she got with Rochester/what led to her attic imprisonment.)
Oooooppsss!!!! I'm so sorry! I feel like such a hypocrite now, ugh. I will fix that, I'm so sorry Kimberly!

My stalker suggested I start reading some Vonnegut. Even though I couldn't find the book he actually recommended at the bookstore, I happened to have Slaughterhouse-Five at home. I started it last night and I'm really enjoying it.
I've just started The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein. It's fantastic so far. I love Klein, I read No Logo: No Space, No Choice, No Jobsa few years ago and I was completely bowled over by it. Like...did ye know that Nike pay just 3 thirds of 1% of their profits to their workers?
I finished The Book of Lost Things and loved it! I would definitely recommend it if you like fairy tales or fairy tale re-tellings. I'm going to start Angels & Demons and Under the Dome, which I'm both excited to start. I'll be in for a good day :)

Yay, I just bought The Book of Lost Things, so that's good to hear! I just finished The Beautiful and Damned (finally!) and am starting Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Just finished the Heretic's Daughter, I really enjoyed it! Since I heard good things about it here, I'm now starting Elantris :)
I just finished Mansfield Park. I liked it alright, but not as much as I had hoped. I'm going to start Emma in the next couple of days.

When I get started on books sometimes my boyfriend has to remind me that he's not quite as interested as I am. I sent gave him the Zombie Survival Guide for Christmas. He's nearly done with it now. He likes that sort of thing. And he's agreed to read books with me sometimes so when I talk about it he'll be able to discuss rather than just listen.
I just finished reading The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold. It was way better than I thought it would be, so I'm planning on seeing the movie now!

Haha yes..my bf says the same thing about not being as interested as me. I guess it's kind of like when he talks about something sports related..I like sports but I don't care that much about certain things.

But I'll play games with him every now and then just since he listens to my book talk.
I'm currently reading David Rakoff's Don't Get Too Comfortable. He's pretty funny! I would liken him to David Sedaris, though less known.
Laura Ashlee wrote: "I just finished Mansfield Park. I liked it alright, but not as much as I had hoped. I'm going to start Emma in the next couple of days."I liked Emma more than Pride and Prejudice! Haven't read any other Jane Austen though... working on it :)
Just finished Never Let Me Go. Very interesting... now reading Her Fearful Symmetry

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite so far. We'll have to see if that's still true when I'm done with Emma.
Jamie wrote: "The Anti 9-5 book sounds interesting!"yeah, I enjoyed it. I think you might like it if you're having an "i don't know what i'm doing with my life" moment. it wont give you career ideas per-say, but it was fun to read and made me think about how I don't want to spend my life in a cubicle!
I am glad everyone seems to be enjoying Heretics Daughter.
I am currently reading Catch 22 and the Inferno. Two complete opposites so they sort of balance each other out. Haven't had much time to read, so it is taking me forever on both, especially the Inferno, because that is the book I have at work, and work is INSANE already.

I'm currently reading To Kill a Mockingbird, which I got from my Secret Santa ;) It's amazing so far.
I finished A Tree Grows in Brooklyn last night. I liked it very much, it was really sweet.I've just started The Alchemist earlier this morning; already I'm really enjoying it.
I just finished Cold Mountain, from my secret santa. I liked it minus the ending.I am starting The Pilot's Wife. I've never read an Anita Shreve book before, but I've heard good things....her writing style is bothering me a little bit though.
I just finished Tempted from the House of Night series. I let it sit on my bookshelf for a while before I picked it up. I was just beginning to get disinterested in it. The first 100 pages were kind of slow, but once I got past them it was great. It's definitely the best book in the series. I had convinced myself this was the last book I would read of the series. Now, that's just not possible. I will definitely have to read the next one.I'll be starting Emma soon.
I loved Emma. Not love-love as with P&P, but close. Mansfield Park (which you mentioned above you read recently) was a letdown. I hope you like Emma more than MP.
I loved Emma too (I also loved the movie, if you like the book, you should watch it), haven't read Mansfield Park yet, why was it such a letdown for you?
It was the third Austen I've read (I've first read P&P, them Emma; haven't gotten around to the others yet), and I was expecting a stronger main character. Emma and Lizzy were so Fierce, and Fanny is just... heh. She's just too "good", and won't stand up for herself. She'd apparently rather have everyone angry at her than say the reason why she doesn't want to do what they want her to. She observes everyone, and knows their character better than people who do get along with them, but she won't say anything to warn the others or anything. She'll just say no. And in the end, obviously - she gets the guy. But it feels like she was a second choice for him as well.
I agree with Bárbara. Mansfield Park is my least favorite out of all Jane Austen's novels. Fanny was weak and generally uninteresting. It was a chore to even finish the book.
i am reading shiver...it s awesome and u all should read this!!!!! hee hee cant wait to read the next!!!
Ha, I never even bothered to finish MP, and I had to read it for class. I loved Emma though, it's my favorite by Austen.

The most interesting character turned out to be Mary Crawford and that was only because she was such a royal bitch the whole time. Haha.

The last book I finished was the first novel in The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- it is bizarre and hilarious. It took me a while to get through the novel- I had to stop and breathe with another book for a little. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy had the potential to make my head explode with all it's craziness, but I loved it!
