Just finished Demian which was really good! And now on to My Cousin Rachel. I loved Rebecca so I'm really excited to read it. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I wasn't sure where to post this, so I settled for here.

Does anyone know of a good Biography/Autobiography about a singer? Someone who was popular from about 1970's-1990's? I'm trying to find a good Christmas present for my mom. She has a copy of Donny Osmond’s Autobiography and loves it. (She's always been a big fan of his)I was thinking of trying to find another biography of a group or person that she likes.

Melissa | 279 comments Jamie have you read Year of Wondersit is also by Geraldine Brooks? It is one of my favorite books. I have yet to read March.

Ashley, Stick with Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. I really liked to book but I listened to it.

I also agree with Jamie with Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Fantastic book! I really didnt think I was going to like it because of when it took place, but it isnt really mentioned and I was hooked, I loved it!

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Kimberly, I really liked Love, Janis, the biography of Janis Joplin from the perspective of her sister...not quite donny osmond though

Jamie, I would also recommend Year of Wonders

I've never heard of Mario Puzo..I'll have to check that book out!

Kimberly, that is hard because even though most of the musicians lived interesting lives, the writer of the story can be not so entertaining. Was there a certain band or singer she really was into during that time period?

Bárbara (leviathan_) Jamie wrote: "I've never heard of Mario Puzo..I'll have to check that book out!"

He wrote The Godfather!

I've finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I'm now going to focus on uni books...

I ended up finishing Curious Incident.. it picked up in the last half of the book. I still think I like the idea of the book more than I liked the book itself... But I wonder if I would have liked it more as an audio book? I've never listened to those...

I also finished Unaccustomed Earth. The first section was beautiful, but the stories were kind of similar. The last section was amazing :) The last story was my favorite!

Now reading I Am the Messenger. Might not get back to it until finals are done :/

Ok, here is a few of the groups and singers she likes:
Bee Gees
Chicago
ABBA
Queen
The Eagles
Phil Collins

There are more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

message 1462: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Kimberly, maybe you could check out Heaven And Hell My Life In The Eagles, 1974-2001, or Wonderful Tonight An Autobiography. The latter is written by Pattie Boyd, she was married to both George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Or maybe even Girls Like Us Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--And the Journey of a Generation, that one sounds really interesting.

Thanks so much, Tahleen! I'll check those out!

message 1464: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (amazingact21) I just finished Jarhead by Anthony Swofford. I knew going into it that the subject was going to be hard, but it was still difficult to keep reading at times.
Now, I'm trying to read books that have been on my list for ages. Starting with, The Pact A Love Story by Jodi Picoult. Her books are hit and miss with me, so I'm curious to see whether I enjoy or hate this one.

I just finished My Cousin Rachel which was really good! I liked her other book (Rebecca) so I was hoping this wouldn't disappoint.

Now I'm on to a book I won through Goodreads giveaways--The Happiness Project Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun

message 1466: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Alicia, I'm the same way with Picoult--The Pact was a miss for me.

Jennifer Jen wrote: "I am finally about to start reading The Book Thief. I've heard lots of good things!"

Hey Jen, it's an amazing book! I just finished it. I think it's my favorite WWII/Holocaust era book, just from sheer originality and well, addictiveness. I hope you enjoy it too!

I just finished reading 'The Book Theif' and also 'The Last Queen of Heaven,' which was a departure from Gregory Maguire's usual tone, but not too shabby.

Now reading the Sookie Stackhouse books :D

Jennifer--Let me know what you think of the Sookie books! I've been debating whether I should read them.

Jamie, so far they are pretty good. I don't know if you've watched the True Blood series, but they are less raunchy/bloody than the show. I like the originality (yeah, its another vampire series, but at least the vampires don't sparkle) and Southern-ness that comes out in her writing style. :)

message 1471: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (kellieag) I just finished The Beans of Egypt, Maine by Carolyn Chute. Has anyone else read this? I really loved it, even though it was a bit disturbing. I don't know what to start next...I was just given The Pilot's Wife and Push by my aunt and sister-in-law.

message 1472: by Drew (new)

Drew Wilson (drewhamilton) I just finished The Looking Glass Wars and starting Seeing Redd when it comes in this week. Good series. Poor writing but fantastic story telling. Also starting The Windup Girl because it sounds a lot like something I started writing a while back.

Right now I'm reading Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Kimberly, there should be something great out there for any of those. My little sister loves the Bee Gees. Kind of wigs people out, they say she is too young. :)

message 1475: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (amazingact21) I finished the Jodi Picoult novel I was on. I had already seen the film adaptation and knew the ending, but I still wasn't crazy about the story.

Now, I'm moving on to A Lion Among Men by Gregory Maguire. I love the Wicked series, and am happy I've finally gotten the chance to read the third book in the series.

message 1476: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone! I'll definitely take a look at them all. Tami that's cool that your sister likes the Bee Gees. How old is she?

Alicia- you'll have to let us know what you think of A Lion Among Men. I've read all the other books in the series and enjoyed them.

I'm still working my way through Elantris. I love it, but I have zero time to read right now. I'm also listening to Skipping Christmas when I drive. A great Christmas book!

Now on to Love in the Time of Cholera!

message 1478: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments I just finished The Handmaid's Tale I didnt really like the ending, but it was similar to Oryx and Crake leaving you to decided what actually happenes, I like it for that book this one I wanted something written out.

Last night I started Blackbird Houseit is good so far. Not as good as her other books, so far.

I recently started Dracula (I know, I am way behind on group reads) and was wondering if anyone else imagined Keanu Reeves while they were reading it?

My sister LOVED the movie when it came out, so it really is the only exposure I have had to the story. And that was so long ago I really don't remember it, except that he is who played Jonathan.

message 1480: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments That version of the movie is the most accurate to the book. I really like that version. I read that book a while ago so I dont remember imagining him. I have done that with outher books though.

message 1481: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 46 comments Finished Eragon and really enjoyed it. Not as good as I thought it would be (it's one of my boyfriend's favorite series, so he really hyped it up and practically forced me to read it) but it was very good.

I'm currently reading City of Bones and it's SO good so far. I love it. After I finish it, I'll be reading Eldest and Brisingr because my boyfriend and one of his friends keeps bugging me about it...

Yesterday I also read Maximum Ride, the graphic novel based off of James Patterson's book. It was very good and I devoured it in about 45 minutes.

message 1482: by Jessie (new)

Jessie (Jessie08) | 128 comments I finally just started The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath Part of me wants to read it nonstop, but I think that may be bad for my mental health (plus I have finals to study for).

message 1483: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I'm just about finished rereading The Lovely Bones in anticipation of the movie. I haven't read it in about 5 years. It's been just as good this go round. I'm also halfway through The Girl Who Played with Fire. I am loving this series. So much action!

message 1485: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I've got about 100 pages of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and I have no idea what I want to read next. I have about 84,000 books that look really appealing right now.

message 1486: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finally finished "Blood Promise" yesterday. It was awesome. Best installment yet. Can't wait until "Spirit Bound" comes out next May. I look forward to it. I am now reading "The God Box" by Alex Sanchez.

message 1487: by Jess (new)

Jess I just finished Susan Muaddi Darraj's The Inheritance of Exile. It's a collection of short stories about Palestinian women in South Philly. It was fantastic! Much different than I expected, and interesting for especially those who only know a little bit about Palestinian culture or Palestinian Christians.

If you want to bug your boyfriend say something along the lines of "This seems like Star Wars..."

message 1489: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments HAHA that is funny Matthew, that would be funny, though I am a Star Trek fan my self. I am listening to Eragon right now and am really liking it.

message 1490: by Monica (new)

Monica (monbon211) | 89 comments I just finished reading The Twilight Saga. There is a lot wrong with these books. I really didn't enjoy them as much, although the books had some decent parts. I guess. And I do realize it's not meant to be a work of literature in terms of the writing style but it's clearly a "potboiler"; produced quickly for profit. I never was a fan of sci-fi or fantasy or whatnot, but I thought I'd give a chance. I could go on but I won't.

I also just finished The Bell Jar, I loved it. 5 stars. Plath's writing was a wonderful change to that of Meyer's.

Now I am currently reading through Little Women. And after that I'll finish up The Lovely Bones. I had started it a long time ago and made it to chapter 4. Now that there's a movie coming out I want to read the whole thing first before I see it.

message 1491: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Just finished "The God Box" by Alex Sanchez. Great book. It only took me 1 and 1/2 days to finish it. I am now reading "The Lightning Theif" by Rick Riordian and "Tempted" by P.C.&Kristin Cast.

message 1495: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth Yay Christmas and A Christmas Carol!! LOL I was saying on another thread in this group how I just want it to be Christmas and I want to go home. LOL I'm at school until December 22nd. boo that. At least it gives me plenty of time to finish the book!!

message 1496: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (amazingact21) I finished A Lion Among Men by Gregory Maguire. Kimberly, this third novel in the Wicked series was good, but I didn't think it was nearly as great as the first two. I was sort of disappointed. Then again, it was centered on the Cowardly Lion, whereas I absolutely love the story of Liir. Still, not a terrible read.

Now I've begun Saturday by Ian McEwan. I've read Atonement and On Chesil Beach and am hoping this one is just as good.
