Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments oh, is that a group read? I totally forgot about that. That's funny.

message 1302: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) I thought that was funny too Tahleen! I am currently reading Belong to Me A Novel by Marisa de los Santos, which I am also almost finished, really enjoying it so far. Although I was told after I was almost half done that it is the sequel to Love Walked In, so I guess I'll read them out of order! lol.. I also just picked up Dracula from the library, can't wait to start!!

message 1303: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I finished Garden Spells a couple days ago and will be reading The History of Love next.

message 1304: by [deleted user] (new)

I bought Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia for 75c in a charity shop the other day. I'm on p.50. I do not like it. At all. I don't know if I'll be able to finish it off.

message 1305: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) Tahleen wrote: "As a side note, I find it ironic that we're discussing our group read in this thread instead of the official group read thread :)"

Lol! oops. :)

Finished EL&IC... very different. very good. I didn't cry but almost... and I laughed so much...

Now switching gears completely... to Austen. :) Reading Emma

message 1306: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Roisu, I didn't like Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia either. I enjoyed the section on Italy well enough but it took me the longest time to finish it after that.

I'm currently reading Atonementand In the Woods. I'm really enjoying the latter; it's one of those books I can't seem to put down. So much suspense!

message 1307: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I'm reading The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan for my English 1102 class, and so far I'm enjoying tremendously (besides the essay I have to do, lol)
I also just started Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris, to try to smother my True Blood withdrawels. And I just finished The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers

I am currently re-reading Little Women..I haven't read it since I was like 10 or so. I'm also reading The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke..interesting so far.

message 1309: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) I just finished reading The Host, which i enjoyed, and now I've started reading The Hunger Games, after reading many good reviews on it from this group!!

message 1310: by Emily (last edited Oct 07, 2009 03:57PM) (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I finished Life of Pi and V for Vendettathe other day. V for Vendetta was really weird and nothing like the movie, but I liked it. I didn't like Life of Pi quite as much this time around.
I'm still working on Possession: A Romance, The Kite Runner, and The History of the End of the World.
I just got Snow Crash from paperbackswap.com and I should be starting it today or tomorrow.
Woo!

message 1311: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Finished The Kite Runner. I knew how it was going to end as soon as *spoiler* the guy told him to get the kid. Boring, predictable, and overdrawn, with stereotypes for characters and heavy handed symbolism, I would have never made myself finish it if it hadn't been for the challenge. I managed to conjure up enough good will to give it three stars.

message 1312: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Oooh I just got The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia in the mail from paperbackswap. Looks like I'll have plenty to do for the next couple of days.

message 1313: by Kailey (new)

Kailey (lukutuokka) I am reading Poplar Music from Vittula and it is awesome. It is written as a memoir with a magical realism flair. The main character grows up in northern Sweden on the border with Finland.

message 1314: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Last night I finished The History of Love and am now reading Something Borrowed.

message 1315: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm almost done with The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Up next will be The Handmaid's Tale. I'm going to try to zip through a bunch of the shorter books on my shelves since I haven't been reading as much lately.

message 1316: by Ashley (last edited Oct 08, 2009 10:03AM) (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "Frostbite" , second book of the Vampire Academy series. I am now going to finish reading "Rage: A Love Story" by Julie Anne Peters and then go on to read "Shadow Kiss" , third book of the Vampire Academy series.

message 1317: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) Jen wrote: "Last night I finished The History of Love and am now reading Something Borrowed."

I loved Something Borrowed!! Something Blue is really good too! those are a couple of my favs!

I'm about halfway through reading Sunshine, a group read for another book club! It's a little slow through the middle, but I'm getting through it.. Not quite as gripping as other vampire novels I have read

message 1318: by Tahleen (last edited Oct 08, 2009 12:15PM) (new)

Tahleen Lindsay I LOVE SUNSHINE!!!!!! It is my favorite vampire book, period. :)

message 1319: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Passed on The Handmaid's Tale AGAIN and just started The Merry Recluse A Life in Essays

haha You liked it that much!!?? I love the enthusiasm! I just finished part 3, and I have heard part 4 is the best... so I'm looking forward to it! I've just found a few parts hard to follow so far, but overall it's been interesting

message 1321: by Tahleen (last edited Oct 09, 2009 01:00PM) (new)

Tahleen lol I did like it that much! I hope you like it better by the time you finish, it did take me a while to read. Also, doesn't it make you want to bake?

message 1322: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 10, 2009 03:18AM) (new)

The Handmaid's Tale is unbelievably good!

Serena Joy in 'The Handmaid's Tale' kind of reminds me of Ann Coulter...

message 1323: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) finished Sunshine, I still didn't like it that much.. and I thought I would after you mentioned how much you liked it Tahleen! lol.. it just wasn't my kinda book i guess. but i've started Water for Elephants which i am really enjoying so far!!

message 1324: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen And see, I didn't really like Water for Elephants! lol

message 1325: by Emily (last edited Oct 12, 2009 11:04AM) (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just finished Never Let Me Go, and it was incredible. It's very introspective and it focuses on subtle relationships between people over time, but the characters are well done and it's somehow very moving. I have never read a book that has a stronger or more realistic feeling of regret/loss/loneliness. It's heartbreaking, but in an everyday kind of way rather than the Old Yeller kind of heartbreak. It's very honest, and it really touched me and hit home, especially the ending. I would recommend it to anyone who likes introspective, character-driven books that explore relationships between people, love, and regret.
5 Stars.

message 1326: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (ljones08) Guess we have different tastes Tahleen!! lol

message 1327: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 14, 2009 06:42AM) (new)

I just read Getting Off Pornography and the End of Masculinity by Robert Jensen. It's quite good, it was interesting reading a male feminist's perspective on porn. It was fantastic that Jensen dealt with the gender issues of porn also, how it affects men also in a negative way. I felt he could have addressed issues such as capitalism and patriarchy more, anhd how they relate to porn. Overall though a good read. Still don't know where I sit on the fence about porn though...

I'm currently reading Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn. It's quite cliched and predictable, but none the less compelling.

message 1328: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm currently reading Anna Karenina, with the goal of finishing by the end of my birthday. I have about 300 pages left, so I think I can do it, especially because all I want to do it curl up and hide in the book. I am really enjoying this one and I don't understand why it's taken me soooooo long to finish.

message 1329: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I finally started The Handmaid's Tale and I'm about halfway through. I'm enjoying it so far, but I feel like I'm waiting for something to happpe.

message 1330: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just started Julie and Julia My Year of Cooking Dangerously, so that makes 6 things now...

message 1331: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) finally finished Emma, liked it much more than i thought i would. now i get to read House of Leaves :)

message 1332: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished "Rage: A Love Story" by Julie Anne Peters. I am going to continue wiht "Shadow Kiss" by Richelle Mead. After that I will read "Blood Promise" by Richelle Mead.

I remember thinking that while I was reading it too.

I am about half way through American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. So far it is really good. I can't quite squeeze in more than about 15 or 20 minutes a day to read right now, and it is killing me! It says he has another book too, so I may have to check that out too. Someday.......

message 1335: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I read a bunch of books on my trip. (It was wonderful, having so much time to read!)

I read The Looking Glass Wars. Such an enjoyable read! It was one of those that I was disappointed when it was over. I'm reading the sequel to it now, Seeing Redd. I'm also reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I love it so far, it's hilarious!

message 1336: by D (new)

D I just started Shiver. After that will be The Sweet Far Thing. I've been reading mostly young adult books since about the middle of summer and I'm thinking it's time to read some classics. I haven't decided which ones, though. Maybe The Woman in White?

message 1337: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Across the Nightingale Floor. It's pretty good! Hopefully the rest of the trilogy is as good.

Also finished The Last Summer by Anne Brashares. Man, it is so boring!

Oh, and I got Letter to D by Andre Gorz, It's so cute! Really makes ya feel better about the world.

message 1338: by [deleted user] (new)

i've read three books in the last week
1. a walk to remember - the movie was on and id'd always wanted to read the book but never went to get it. It was worth it.
2. Dreamland (Sarah dessen) three words Oh my god
3. Firefly Lane - it was okay, one of those you're kind of on the fence about what to think about it.

message 1339: by D (new)

D Roisu wrote: "Also finished The Last Summer by Anne Brashares. Man, it is so ..."

Agreed! I thought the fist part was okay, but after they left the island it went downhill. I hadn't sensed any time change--I thought everything that had happened could've happened in the first few weeks of summer. I also thought that the whole story would take place over one summer (just based on the title), which it wasn't.

Tahleen Ashley wrote: "finally finished Emma, liked it much more than i thought i would. now i get to read House of Leaves :)"

Ashley, Emma is my favorite Jane Austen novel. We were talking in the class I read it in about how one of our crazy (and probably on her way to senility) professors would be perfect to read the part of Miss Bates. The next class, guess who we had as a guest? It was, quite simply, incredibly and hilarious.

message 1341: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I finished The Alchemaster's Apprentice by Walter Moer and I am once again satisfied by how full his books are.

I just started The Varayan Memoir 1: Son of the Hero by Rick Shelley. I've really want to read a pure fantasy novel and i happen to stumble upon it in my basement

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Tahleen wrote: "I just finished Graceling, and now I think I'm on to Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie."

I loved The Help. I honestly felt like I was there in their little kitchen.. listening in on the interviews. Haha.

message 1343: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Just finished The Calligrapher's Daughter A Novel and I absolutely loved it. Another historical fiction (I know, I know), but it was wonderful.

I just finished Little Women. I remember that I read it when I was a young girl but I couldn't remember a darn thing about it. I loved it!

I have no idea what I'll read next!

message 1345: by Molly (new)

Molly (slinkyxo) | 153 comments I haven't been reading much lately and I hate it! You all are making me very jealous!

message 1346: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments Just finished Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs A Low Culture Manifesto & My Sister's Keeper

I think I'm going to read Dracula next.

message 1347: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I just recently finished Carrie, and even though I've read it several times, I think it resonates with me more now that I'm in college and have been out of high school for a few years.

Right now, I'm reading The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks, and it's a pretty good light read for when I'm here at school.

message 1348: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just finished Possession A Romance. Wow. I see why it's on the New York Times Top 100 Books list. It's amazing. Some parts are a little slow, but it can get really intense in other parts, so I think it balances out. It talks about so many different kinds of love and relationship situations (among lots of other things, like literary criticism and modern biography) and it manages to be both realistic and satisfy the need for romance. The ending is realistic, bittersweet, and happy. It's really a wonderful book, and I recommend it to anyone who likes poetry, mystery, detective work, and love.

That sounds very interesting Emily! I might just have to pick it up!

message 1350: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Emily, I read another one of A.S. Byatt's works, it was actually a novel called Morpha Eugenia. I really loved that one and I think you might enjoy it too. It's also got a movie that was based off of it, though I forget what that's called.
