Janet I just finished Swindle. It's a young adult novel, geared towards boys! It was great and I really enjoyed it!!

I just started on March by Geraldine Brooks

Katerina | 252 comments Just finished Those Who Save Us..good book! And now reading The Picture of Dorian Gray & Blink

message 1355: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I'm reading Julie and Julia, and I'm actually surprised at how entertaining it is. I thought it would really suck, but it's actually a pretty good light read. It's not something I would recommend if you're in the mood for great literature, but for a light school-time read it's a good choice.

Cierra--how was The Stranger?

message 1358: by Cierra (new)

Cierra (cierrab) It was pretty good. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about it, the main character is pretty emotionless and that irritated me a lot, but Camus is a great writer and he does a great job at describing scenes in a way that you can really picture them. But as the book goes on you get a sense of why the protagonist is the way he is and the book definitely leaves you thinking after you've finished.

message 1359: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Emily, I thought parts of Julie and Julia were absolutely hilarious. But there were parts that definitely lagged in my opinion. I think that the hilarious parts were hilarious enough to make up for the lagging.

message 1360: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Just finished The Secret Bride In The Court of Henry VIII and wasn't too thrilled. Now I'm reading The Perfect Royal Mistress A Novel. We'll see if the one's any better.

message 1361: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments the world made straight, ron rush.
Its not bad.

Just finished Shes Come Undone and LOOOOVED it! I heart Wally Lamb :)

message 1362: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments Annie - I loved She's Come Undone! One of my favorites ever!!!

I definitely agree. Some parts are really slow, and some are really funny.

I really want to read that. I've read I Know This Much Is True and enjoyed it.

message 1365: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm about done with The Men Who Stare at Goats. I'm really excited for the movie and OF COURSE (haha) have to read the books before seeing it.

Haha that movie looks funny. How's the book?

message 1367: by Alisha (last edited Oct 31, 2009 12:30PM) (new)

Alisha Hanson Glatzel (alicat39) Im usually reading 2-3 books at a time, a little ADD I think. I just finished Olive Kitteridge A Novel in Storiesit was ok. I almost stopped reading it because I HATED Olive but a friend convinced me to finish and I'm glad I did.

I'm knee deep in the Outlander series, currently on book 4. These books are ridiculously long but I keep picking up the next in the series - hopelessly addicted! I'm about 1/2 way done with Drums of Autumn

I really want to read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Closenext, that was my Dec nomination.

message 1368: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Jamie, it's pretty good. I don't understand how they're making a movie out of it (based on the previews). So many characters are introduced for such short periods of time and so many conspiracy theory type things from the last fifty or so years are covered. Interesting stuff.

El&IC was SUCH a good book, Alisha! We read it for our group read a while back. We had such a good discussion about it. If you end up reading it, you should check it out.

message 1370: by Bárbara (new)

Bárbara (leviathan_) I loved EI&IC as well.

I'm making a pause on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, for ages now, due to uni :( So I'm reading Democracy and Its Critics and The Third Wave Democratization in the Late Twentieth Century, argh. And a little of Planning Local Economic Development Theory and Practice, and will start International Organisations soon after. Boring :(

Thank you Jamie, that's great! I will check it out and change my Dec nomination. :p

message 1372: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm soooooo close to finishing Anna Karenina. 47 pages! I'm going to try to finish tonight...if I get my 15 page rough draft written. Otherwise, I'll finish Tuesday.

message 1373: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments So, Julie and Julia was pretty good. Not life changing, not incredible, but enjoyable and funny and definitely worth the 10 points I got for the fall/winter challenge. If anyone needs a quick easy read, or a filler book for their challenge, I'd recommend it.

message 1374: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I recently started The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. It's a YA science fiction, and it's a little difficult to read just because it has very dark and cruel undertones. I'm enjoying it, though, and I'm looking forward to seeing what implications come out of this story.

message 1375: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I just picked up Slaughterhouse-Five. It's required reading for my Intro to Literature class.

message 1376: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) Finished The Handmaid's Tale and starting Franny & Zooey, and old group read

message 1377: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just picked up Much Ado About Nothing from the library. I'm pretty excited about it. I saw a movie that they made of it, and it's probably my favorite movie ever. And they stuck really close to the play, so I'm pretty pumped.
I've also reserved The Remains of the Day, which I'm also really excited about, considering how much I loved Never Let Me Go. I'm also hoping to find All Creatures Great and Small sometime soon, if I can manage to find my way through the library without getting lost.

message 1378: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Emily I love Much Ado. It's probably one of my very favorite Shakespeare plays. I loved the movie. What a cast! Although Keanu Reeves can't say an iambic pentameter to save his life.

message 1379: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Emily and Kimberly, ME TOO!! I own the movie, and I was lucky enough to see an amazing performance of it in London at the National Theater. I would say it's probably my favorite Shakespeare comedy, if not my favorite Shakespeare play altogether.

message 1380: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I just finished Anna Karenina! I started it about a year ago and now I'm done! I feel like doing a really raunchy victory dance in my living room to celebrate. Maybe light some sparklers. Next is to finish The Grapes of Wrath. I only have about 175 pages left of it.

message 1381: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I'm trying to get through Ventrue Clan Novel, which even though it's short and fairly good it's taking a long time for some reason.

Also kind of reading my roommates book off and on called Elantris.

message 1382: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Michelle you'll have to let us know what you think of Elantris. I've almost bought it at the bookstore a couple times now.

Michelle (shadowrose) Kimberly wrote: "Michelle you'll have to let us know what you think of Elantris. I've almost bought it at the bookstore a couple times now. "

Well so far I'm about 300(ish) pages into it and I love it, I really want to buy it myself so I can reread it in the future. I completely recommend it, it's very original and the storyline completely sucked me.

message 1384: by Lyka (new)

Lyka Walton | 7 comments I didn't JUST finish reading this book, but it was in the last few books I finished reading-- it's A Confederacy of Dunces! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good laugh. I have never laughed so much from a book. It's more than just comedy though; it wasn't until the end that I got the title. In a way it is sad to know the irrationality of the main character.

But I don't want to get too into it :)! Bottom line, loved this book so much!

I've heard that book is hilarious! I keep seeing it every time I go into Borders. I'm thinking I should just cave and buy it! lol

message 1386: by Lyka (new)

Lyka Walton | 7 comments Do it, I think by the 5th page I started laughing! It's the dialogue.

message 1387: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights since I never got around to it while I was in school. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it so far. I don't know why I waited so long to read so many of these great classics.
I'm also reading the House of Night Series.. just about to start the 4th book Untamed. Has anyone else read these? I'm interested in the storyline, but the narrator annoys the crap out of me! The writing reminds me of things my friends and I used to write back in 7th grade. Part of me really wants to stop reading but I also am interested to see what happens.

message 1388: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Heather, I know what you mean. I like the storyline too, but Zoey can be SO PREACHY it makes me sick.

message 1389: by Michelle (last edited Nov 06, 2009 06:08AM) (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I finally finished Ventrue Clan Novel and started Water for Elephants.
It's a group read for one of my other groups here on Goodreads. So far I'm really liking it.

message 1390: by Emily (last edited Nov 05, 2009 03:35PM) (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just finished Much Ado About Nothing. It's so funny! I swear that man is a genius.

In other news, I requested and am waiting for The Remains of the Day and Maus from the library. I still can't find All Creatures Great and Small because apparently that section of the library only exists in the catalog's imagination.

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I recently finished reading The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America, it was interesting...but just okay. Now I'm reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close which I love so far.

Then if it's in from the library I'll be reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Jen..you are reading one of my favorite books in the world! :) I hope you continue to love it. Make sure you check out the thread for it in the Past Discussion folder because I'd definitely love to talk about it again! :)

message 1393: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I think I really need to read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I've heard nothing but good things about it from this group. I might need to add it to my list of books to pick up next time I'm at the bookstore...

message 1397: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I just finished The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck. It was really good. Coming from Oklahoma, I see evidence of the Depression and New Deal all of the time (a couple of buildings on my college campus were built with New Deal money and sidewalks all over the place have the WPA emblem). And I hear stories from my papa about the Depression frequently. This book really combined all of those things to make a very complete, very real portrait of what the Depression was like for the Okies who traveled to California. Personally, I feel that this book helped explain why Oklahoma is the way it is today. Anyway...really good book; I'd recommend it.

Christmas Shoes light reading? I can't hardly listen to the song without getting teary eyed.
