Nicole (nicole_k) I just finished "The Bell Jar" and I loved it! It was hard to get into at first, but once I identified with Esther, I couldn't put the book down! She was so similar to me (her life, her feminist thoughts, and her depression...to a lesser extent though)

Nicole..that is one of my FAVORITE books of all time!

message 1403: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I love The Bell Jar as well. I've re-read it 3-4 times and each time I recognize and identify with a different aspect of Esther. So glad that you enjoyed it!

message 1404: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close this morning. I really liked it!
Now I'm reading Twilight. I'm already almost 200 pages into it, I did not think I was going to like it at all...but I can't put it down.

message 1405: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments I think Im going to finally give into Twilight (even after I bashed it)
My boyfriend's grandmother just gave me a Nicholas Sparks book to read, The Choice. As lame as I found it, I couldnt put it down! It was so good! But I still think his love stories are lame haha

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I'm currently reading Catching Fire and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I'm taking a break from my other books to do so. Light reading is good, and both work for my challenge.

message 1407: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I just started The Eye of the World very large book so I may pick another book to read along side it.

message 1408: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I'm in the middle of Speak, which I'm finding hard to put down. If you haven't read it yet you should.

message 1409: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) Tahleen, I haven't read Speak, but I actually just watched the movie last week. I normally get really annoyed by Kristen Stewart, but I thought it was a pretty good movie... kinda wish I'd read the book first though.

message 1410: by Drew (new)

Drew Wilson (drewhamilton) I'm reading The Road just finished The Kingdom of Matthias.

message 1411: by Jayme (new)

Jayme Whitson (jlwhitson) i'm reading Emily Giffin's "Something Blue" and I just finished her "Something Borrowed." a bit of chick lit.

message 1412: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm reading Swann's Way right now and I'm absolutely loving it! Something about this time of year makes me fall in love with language, and Swann's Way is a tremendous experiment in language. I wish I had the time to read it in its original French, maybe this summer.

How was Something Borrowed..I won it through the Goodreads giveaway thing!

Jardley Ashley wrote: "Finished The Handmaid's Tale and starting Franny & Zooey, and old group read "

Franny and Zooey is really good, though some of the topics was unexpected. Happy reading. How is Handmaid's Tale I have a friend whose read it but never picked it up myself.

message 1415: by Jardley (new)

Jardley And I just finished reading Unaccustomed Earth and now on to Love & Lies.

I've heard great things about Unaccustomed Earth! What did you think?

Jayme Whitson (jlwhitson) Jamie wrote: "How was Something Borrowed..I won it through the Goodreads giveaway th..."

It was actually really good, one of my favorite chick lit books yet. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did, because the beginning isn't all that great, but it grew on me.

Tahleen Heather wrote: "Tahleen, I haven't read Speak, but I actually just watched the movie last week. I normally get really annoyed by Kristen Stewart, but I thought it was a pretty good movie... kinda wish I'd read the..."

I want to see the movie now. I'm sure it's not as good as the book but I think it will be interesting to see it on screen.

message 1419: by D (new)

D It's been a long time since I've read Speak or seen the movie, but I remember thinking the movie was pretty well done, considering the fact that so much of the book is thoughts and observations rather than dialog (at least for the main character).

message 1420: by Jayme (new)

Jayme Whitson (jlwhitson) Heather wrote: "I'm currently reading Wuthering Heights since I never got around to it while I was in school. I'm about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying it so far. I don't know why I waited so long ..."

So true. I read the first and second novel, and I have the fourth one in my stack somewhere, but I just really didn't enjoy the style of the books at all. I do however like the fact it makes place in Tulsa, since I grew up only 40 miles from there. I liked reading about places I see everyday when I drive to work.

message 1421: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 279 comments I just finished reaing Dreamfever and Hamlet. I am now reading The Handmaid's Tale, Anna Karenina and The Taming of the Shrew.

message 1422: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Just started The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I'm kind of bored with it already.

message 1423: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Catching Fire. Both were ok, but not great. Potato was funny and Fire was exciting, but both were pretty contrived and neither were written very well. Still, they were entertaining for a quick pleasure read.

I'm currently reading The Crying of Lot 49, which is just plain strange, and I'm hoping to get The Remains of the Day from the library soon.
I'm also going to be ordering some paperbackswap books soon so I'll be sure to have books over winter break. I'm hoping to get a bunch of my challenge books done over Christmas.

message 1424: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Close to the middle of Tomcat in Love. I remember LOVING The Things They Carried in high school, and this book is okay so far but hasn't blown me away yet.

The handmaid's Tale was good, my first Margaret Atwood and I want to read her other novels now. The idea itself was hard to read about but I think it was definitely worth it!

I started
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time but it is taking me FOREVER to read. I want to like it, because I like the idea, I just can't get into it at all.

I also picked up Unaccustomed Earth at the library this morning! I might have to start this one instead.

message 1426: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished Brilliance of the Moon by Lian Hearn. It was ok, fairly entertaining! I liked the trilogy, but I won't read them again, so I'll give them to a charity book store.

Has anyone read Emma Goldmans autobiography 'Living my life'? I REALLY want to read it!

message 1428: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Currently reading The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia. It's very good so far.

message 1429: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Just finished An Evil Guest by Gene Wolfe, Starting The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

message 1430: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Currently reading The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, to balance Sylvia. They're really good, but I can only read the journals in bits and pieces otherwise I start getting too much inside her head and that's not good.

message 1431: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 46 comments This weekend I finished A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and Rapunzel's Revenge, a fractured fairy tale graphic novel. Both were fantastic reads.

Last night I started Salem's Lot by Stephen King. First time I've gotten a chance to read it and it's excellent so far. My mom always told me about how she read it when she was a teenager and it scared her so badly, she never read another SK book again. I've been itching to read it ever since. :D

I just started reading Demian by Hermann Hesse

message 1435: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jessie, It's really good. My advice: definitely have a pen handy when you read it in case something jumps out at you, have a journal to write what you think, and have a secondary light read so that you don't get too much in her head.

message 1436: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I just started reading Elantris. I finally bought it after Michelle recommended it. I'm only 70ish pages into it but I'm loving it so far. It's completely different than other fantasy novels I've read.

message 1437: by Jayme (new)

Jayme Whitson (jlwhitson) Just finished Shrinking Violet! It was so good. Little bit lost on what to read next...glad i have thanksgiving weekend to decided.

message 1438: by Jessie (new)

Jessie (Jessie08) | 128 comments Thanks Lori. I agree, I don't think it would be good being too inside her head.

message 1439: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished reading "The Piano Man" by Marcia Preston. It was a great read. I am going to continue with reading "Blood Promise" .

message 1440: by D (new)

D I finished An Abundance of Katherines and started My Sister's Keeper. I thought I'd love An Abundance but wasn't really into it. I'm enjoying My Sister's Keeper so far, though.

message 1441: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm reading Slaughter House Five. I've been listening to the audio book.

message 1442: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 252 comments I've been in sort of a reading slump lately. I just started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I'm hoping that it will be good.

I hate reading slumps! I've been dying to read that book. I've heard good things.

message 1444: by Alessia (new)

Alessia (allieonthemoon) I just finished reading The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan. I found the story quite weird and disturbing, but I really enjoyed its prose and its style. I always appreciate the way McEwan can depict the atmosphere surrounding his characters with extraordinary skill. Even the most absurd situation seems real and convincing like you could actually enter it.

Now I'm reading "Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body" (or, to be more precise I'm listening to the audio book); I've only just started it, but it looks interesting.

@Katerina: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is really good, maybe a bit slow in some points but I loved the main character, Lisbeth. She is so strong and smart, and even with her many faults I think she's one of the best fictional heroine I've ever read about.

I always wondered why they changed the title in English, though...it should be "Men who hate women", which is absolutely more appropriate.

message 1445: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Is there still a thread for the Slaughter House Five discussion? I'm trying to fill out my book report for it, I'm like a page short. :-P

Katerina, I hope you like Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I agree totally with Allie. I love Lisbeth. The story is slow at times, but good. I liked the second book better though.

message 1449: by Emily (new)

Emily just finished Persepolis 1 The Story of a Childhoodand loved it!

message 1450: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm still working on The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, which is quickly becoming a favorite book of mine. It's so funny and, seriously, I'm getting contact highs. Love it.

I also can't put down The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath. I'm supposed to read it with a friend, but I just can't stop. She doesn't even have her copy yet. She'll either get over it or she won't.

And I'm reading Coffee and Coffeehouses The Origins of a Social Beverage in the Medieval Near East for my Eastern Civ class. You'd think that I'd like it since it's about coffee, but not so much. It's pretty dry. I feel like I should like it because the professor likes is and I like the professor, but I don't.
