I couldn't get into Blindness but, despite that, I've picked up a copy of his book, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ. Hopefully, this one will go better than Blindness did.

Yeap! In Greek because I'm Greek! It's my second book of Saramago so far. I would suggest All the Names as an introduction to his work.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Just started The Stolen Crown: The secret marriage that forever changed the fate of England The Stolen Crown The secret marriage that forever changed the fate of England by Susan Higginbotham which seems so far to be about the same story as The Queen of Last Hopes The Queen of Last Hopes by Susan Higginbotham only told from the perspective of some characters on the other side of the conflict. Interesting, and I didn't realize that when I started it. Plus it's the last book I need for a couple of my May challenges so BOOYAH!

Bill Bryson always makes me laugh. Have you read anything else by him?

message 24856: by Jane (new)

Jane | 27 comments So, I finished The Silent Land. I really liked it - great atmosphere, appropriately eerie. Ready for something that was less of a quick read, I picked up The Magus, but now I feel like I am just waiting for it to become the "daring literary thriller" that is advertised on its cover. So far, it is in no way "impossible to stop reading." We'll see....

Lynda | 14 comments I just finished Fool Moon and loved it. Now I'm reading The Clan of the Cave Bear to see if I still enjoy it 30 years later.

message 24858: by Richard (new)

Richard Knaak (richardknaak) | 4 comments Reading Harry Turtledove's Ruled Britannia. As always, nice pacing with excellent historical detail in this world where the Spanish conquered England and Shakespeare is the main character.

Lynda, I'm thinking of reading the Clan of the Cave Bear series. Did you read all of them and what did you think?

I'm still still still reading Jane Eyre and am really liking it - I just haven't had alot of time to read lately. Hope to get back to it tonight.

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 73 comments I just started reading Mrs. Dalloway and I'm re-reading the Harry Potter books (again) before the final movie comes out.

I want to start brushing up on (or learning, as the case may be) my British/English history, but I don't really know where to start. Anyone have any suggestions?

message 24866: by Angela (new)

Angela Sellers I just finishedThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and now I will start Dreams of Joy: A Novel. I won an advanced reader's copy, so I want to read it before it is actually supposed to come out.

Rayna,
Try to go to explore-genre-history-european history from your home page. Great ideas there and then you could check listopia for british history. Another idea - search groups for british history. There are probably several! I can't wait for the last HP movie but will not be rereading the series as I am working towards challenges and getting ready to move :) Enjoy

I don't think I ever finished the series (and the latest was just released). I remember enjoying the ones I did read, though.

Jane Eyre is probably my favorite book ever. Glad you're enjoying it.

message 24879: by Beth (new)

Beth I just finished the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series and really liked it. For my book discussion group, I read Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and the Other's Fight to Bring Her Home, which made for a very interesting discussion. And now I'm reading an Agatha Christie classic A Murder Is Announced. Next, I plan to tackle some mysteries written by fellow Midnight Ink authors that I picked up at the Malice Domestic conference.

Sarah Kernochan (professorbunny) | 1 comments Just finished Room by Emma Donoghue. I've been so busy with my own writing, I wasn't able to get to this wonderful book till just last week. What a touching story, and so thought provoking. I had no idea what direction the author would take. She brings you right smack into the lives of two very emotionally detailed characters. I became attached to both mother and son almost immediately. Room is a great read.

you could try London from Edward Rutherford. it starts really, really, really far back and moves through the history of the city by telling the story of inter-related characters and families. all of his historical fiction that i've read have been awesome.

you could also look in to books from David Liss. his stories center on late 17th/early 18th century, and the changing economic and social climates of england, and to some extent america.

if you are willing to read historical romance, check out Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series. they are too serious (they are romance books after all) but they are set around the time of the Napoleonic wars, so you can learn some good stuff in those also about the ways of society.

message 24890: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) The teacher from my last course suggested I read it so I picked up Understanding Color: An Introduction for Designers, 2nd Edition by Linda Holtzschue.

I'm also browsing through 101 Action Movies You Must See Before You Die .

I don't have anything literal going right now. I finished The Historian a few days ago and I have to say I did not really care for it. Next, I'm going to pick up Uncle Stephen's Pet Sematary for a re-read.

Natalie (elendili) I'm almost done with Sense and Sensibility which has proved to be a surprisingly delightful read. I so enjoyed reading it I'm going to read the rest of Jane Austen's works soon.

I started The Winter of Our Discontent but got too caught up in S&S to get very far. As soon as I finish S&S I'm going to get back to this; Steinbeck is a favourite of mine^^
