I am currently reading Yukako Kabei's Kieli, Vol. 3: Prisoners Bound for Another Planet at the moment (in preparation for volume 4 which just came out last week). It's pretty good so far (as always); I love how it can be a mix of a heart-warming tale with bouts of melancholy throughout...

I finished Fledgling (Theo Waitley, #1) for a comfort read to relax, and am now starting The Salt Road, which has opened beautifully. I loved this author's former work, The Tenth Gift, so I expect this one will be well done, too.Our neighborhood book club is reading Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before, and meets Friday, so I'm about a quarter of the way done that one. The juxtaposition of past and present impressions is quite interesting, sometimes funny, sometimes wrenching.
I just finished The Night Season (Gretchen Lowell, #4) and thought it was ok. Not about Gretchen this time, just Archie. Anyone else reading this series? Now trying to get interested in The World House.
And still listening to We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Just finished my current read, and I think I'm going to start Water for Elephants as my next. Also have The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements on the go as a non-fiction to dip in and out of. The chemistry can be pretty complex though, so I have to be in the right mood!
How are you finding We Need to Talk About Kevin, Dana? A former colleague was telling me about it a while back and it's something I might like to read.

I have read this series as well. The latest was OK, but not as good as the previous.
Zee wrote: "Just finished my current read, and I think I'm going to start Water for Elephants as my next."I just read that one over last weekend and loved it. A fast, enjoyable read!
Since then I've read a rom suspense I liked, Protecting Plain Jane by Julie Miller, and a mystery I didn't much care for, Faux Finished by Peg Marberg. Now I am reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and thoroughly enjoying it.
So when I began reading
I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was drawn in to the 1930's depression era in the mountains of North Carolina. Then I became engrossed in a number of other books and let it slide for awhile. About midpoint I was thinking so okay this seems to be dragging, but maybe it is just me and being distracted by other books.
Now I am about 50 pages from the end and can't seem to put it down. I guess you just have to ride the rollercoaster all the way around to appreciate the end of the ride.
Despite still working on my thesis big time, I've started reading a number of books: Bob Ong's MACARTHUR, Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (at long last!!!) and Sarah Bradford's George VI (inspired after watching The King's Speech twice now xD)
Yesterday I started Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon. Reminds me of the James Herriot books and I get a definite impression that Dr. Nick Trout may have been influenced in career choice by the All Creatures Great and Small TV series.
Zee wrote: "How are you finding We Need to Talk About Kevin, Dana? A former colleague was telling me about it a while back and it's something I might like to read.."I bet it is hard to read, just length, and format of letters. Hearing it is much easier. It probably could be way shorter, but listening to the narrator build up to discussing the important question, is fascinating. I am on 9/16 disc. I have not found a character to like at all, but the description of situations is really heart wrenching. I do want to make it to the end.
I think that describes a good book!!
I am currently listening to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by, Rebecca Skloot it is very fascinating! Also reading Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by, John Elder Robinson
Don't know why I ended up with 2 non-fiction at once I think because I finished The Bird Sisters and knew that right now no other fiction is going to live up to it so needed a bit of a departure.
I just finished The Better Mother by Jen Sookfong Lee, which was very good. Now I'm starting Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda.
I've had this on my shelf for ages and haven't gotten around to reading it. I shall be interested to hear what you think of it.
Gitte wrote: "I started Gone With the Wind last night."I've always been intimidated by that book. It's on my list of books to read at some point but I'm going to need to gather my courage first...
i'm going to try to finish The Woman in White tonight. i have about pages left, so it's ambitious of me to try finishing it tonight.i have a few books to choose from when i'm done, but i'm thinking i'll start with the second Flavia book.
I just finished Travels with Charley: In Search of America which was outstanding. I'm still working on The Forgotten Garden, and I'm gonna start Tulipmania: Money, Honor, and Knowledge in the Dutch Golden Age I also picked up The Ghost Trap but I think it may be a week or so til I get a chance to get that underway. Much like the time that I loaded up a good 2 quarters of mashed potatoes on my plate though, I think my eyes may be a little bigger than my stomach. Saying incantations for speedy reading!
started working on these for the next week:The Invisible Mountain fin 5/4/11
The Bone People
High Five fin 5/5/11
The Graveyard Book
finished The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao yesterday
Yesterday, I finished American Gods. Great book. I really love Gaiman's writing. Now, I'm continuing The Circle Trilogy: The Complete Trilogy in One Epic Edition. I'm onto the second book in the series: Red.
I just finished The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins which was absolutely phenomenal and just started The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett for this TNBBC's May read.
I just finished The Hunger Games. I liked it, but not enough to start the next book in the series. I'll give it a few weeks.I just bought Mistress of the Art of Death I'm looking forward to starting that tonight.
I am reading The Art of War and The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, Revised Edition. The Power of Your Subconscious Mind is a good read but as a Christian I don't agree with all of his tactics. I would love to discuss this book with anyone else who has read it. Thanks
Dani wrote: "I just finished The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins which was absolutely phenomenal and just started The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett..."I read Hunger Games about 9 months ago - a doozie!
Pillars of the Earth has been taken up by another discussion group here, I think. Might do it again - still have it on audio.
So far about 100 pages into
The Historian
. Intriguing but a little slow. I'm interested in the history but vampires are not really my thing so the legend feels kind of blasé for me.
Susanna wrote: "So far about 100 pages into The Historian. Intriguing but a little slow. I'm interested in the history but vampires are not really my thing so the legend feels kind of blasé for me."Hi Susanna, the beginning is indeed slow but it changes later and you get two great stories which come together.
I am reading Mr Briggs' Hat by Kate Colquhoun, the true story of the first murder (in1864) on a railway in England. Anyone who enjoyed The Suspiciions of Mr Whicher would like this.
Hi Jeane! I'm hoping for the story to pick up soon. I'm getting a little tired of the slow exposition.
i finished Dating Big Bird by Laura Zigman today. i wasn't very impressed with it, so i'm glad it was short and only took me 2 days or so to finish it.
Susanna wrote: "Hi Jeane! I'm hoping for the story to pick up soon. I'm getting a little tired of the slow exposition."This one was good, but it can be slow at times. Another one where you think "Gee they coulda told that story with less pages!" but it does get better! Stick with it!! =)
Yesterday I hit the library and came out with a pretty good stack but I decided I would start with Safe Haven. I've not read a Sparks book for awhile, and needed something a bit light and easy. So far it seems pretty good!
I'm reading A Turn in the Road by Debbie Macomber book 8 in the Blossom Street series!! I love this series!!
Allison wrote: "I just finished The Better Mother by Jen Sookfong Lee, which was very good. Now I'm starting Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda."Allison I just recently purchased Secret Daughter. Please let me know what you think of it when you are done.
Brenda wrote: "I just started this evening, The Bird Sisters, I enjoyed the first chapter."I just bought Bird Sisters on Friday, I hope it is worth the price.

Catherine wrote: "I'm reading

This was the second book I read of this author and I noticed that for me the author seems to write in a way that is very catchy!!
Currently reading
by Charlie Cochrane. I had been meaning to reading something of hers for the longest. Very enjoyable read.

Will do, Clara! :)
Let's see, I'm currently reading Cezanne's Quarry and enjoying it so far. I'm about 1/3 of the way though. I'm also reading The Alchemyst, which I am loving. He'll by visiting our local Barnes & Noble on May 29th, as part of his tour for the next book in this series. I'm looking forward to meeting this wonderful writer. The third book on my nightstand isCry of the Icemark, I'm enjoying, but haven't been giving it much time lately with everything else I have going. I'm listening to The Wise Man's Fear, in the car, and i can say that Day 2 is as good as Day 1 was, at least to this point. God I love books.
