Jenny (yoninadove) | 2 comments Hey everyone! My pen name is Yonina. I'm 24 years old, soon to be mom, an active reader and an aspiring writer. I'm a huge fan of reading anything that can transport me to a world different from the reality we are forced to live.

message 452: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Monk | 7 comments Hi all I'm Andrew and I guess I fall into the "old category. I fell in love with fantasy when I first saw the animated version of Lord of the rings at age 10 in 1980 (work out how old I am yet?). They never made the second part of the movie though... much to my disgust. Did anyone else see that version?

Cheers

Andrew

Lydia (lapetitelydia) Hi! I'm Lydia. I was looking for some decent groups to get involved with and this seemed like an awesome one. I am in my mid-twenties and adore fantasy. In fact, I am on my 30th read through of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. (Though I am taking a break right now.) I am currently reading through the Underland series by Suzanne Collins.

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 191 comments Does nobody here but me love FRINGE?! Granted, I'm a huge SG-1 fan but mostly because of RDA's wry humor and of course, who doesn't love a sexy scientist ;-) But since SG1 is no longer on the air, had to find a new one and finally got around to watch FRINGE. It's pretty darn good alternate reality / alternate timeline / alternate laws of science stuff!

Joel Reeves (Walpole) | 4 comments Hello, Andrew. I recall seeing the animated version of LOTF at the theater with my older brother. I remember we had just finished reading the books aloud together at home. I can't remember now -- did the movie sort of end somewhere in the middle of The Two Towers? I think they ran out of money before finishing it.

message 461: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 116 comments Hey Indibrag, I will never turn a book down :)

Marjorie me and hubby love Fringe.

Joel I think you are right about the early LOTR. I think it was too early really people weren't ready for it then.

message 462: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Monk | 7 comments Hi Joel. I actually own a copy of the animated version and yes it finishes in the middle of the two towers. I spent my childhood years waiting for the rest of the movie. Do you think we should organize a petition? I wonder if they would listen. The only other movie I have seen that has been done in that kind of style was the polar express. Happy reading Andrew Monk

message 463: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Monk | 7 comments Wow Lydia 30 times through LOTR? I must admit I've only read it once and it seemed to take me forever to get Frodo to Mount Doom. But 30 times? Wow kudos to you.
Happy reading
Andrew Monk

That is impressive. I've probably only read it five times myself...I keep discovering too many new books. The Underland series is pretty good. I enjoyed it during my childhood.

I think I was probably the twenty-something guy behind you in line who kept giving you and your little friends a hard time because you were horsing around and bumping into me. Unless that was someone else. ;)

Michael | 1 comments Hello everyone. I'm 19 years old and am in the US army. I love reading and enjoy fantasy books in particular. Some of my favorites are A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, The Dread Empire and The Black Company series by Glen Cook, and the Shadowmarch series by Tad Williams. This looked like a good group to join, so here I am. Nice to meet you.

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 191 comments Jonathan wrote: "Hey Chris hope you can find some good sci-fi and help others find some as well. And also some fantasy novels too."

And also Fantasy??? I think this group's most active fans (yes, counting yourself, O Moderator) are more Fantasy-genre than SF-genre oriented. And that is NOT to say it's a good or bad thing, just an observation. In fact, I keep looking for the gritty scifi (like my own stuff now that you've read it) but I don't see much discussed here. LOTS of super duper really GREAT Fantasy finds here but not so much on the standard or like mine, classic scifi. Not even space opera (haha)

Ooooh, speaking of space opera though, anyone who's a fan of Lois McMaster Bujold, if you're not already aware of this, eARC came out for the new book in the Vorkosigan Saga, except Captain Vorpatril's Alliance is more of an Ivan Vorpatril Adventure than it is a Miles Vorkosigan Adventure. It's very much different and yet the same. I guess Lois has gotten older too. Darn!

The hardcover's still not coming til next Oct/Nov timeframe (I pre-ordered mine from Amazon over the winter :-) but Baen made the eARC available almost 2 weeks ago (woohoo!!) It's not free ($15) but it is soooo worth getting this 6 mos early! My only challenge with it is that I need to do some this here WORK and it's beckoning me to finish reading *argh* :)

message 493: by Fayley (new)

Fayley A new Vorkosigan book! Thanks for the tip. Lois McMaster Bujold is my equal favourite author (together with Elizabeth Moon) I just love character driven fiction, and both of these authors write characters I LOVE.

message 494: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 191 comments Fayley, seriously? You're just hearing about it? I thought YOU already knew :) Glad I posted now!

It's soooo worth the $15. I'm just past half done and keep saying I won't read it until I finish my own WORK but I can't stop thinking about the story. It's very different from the Miles books, and yet the same, kind of the same way Cordelia's Honor is different (and the same).

Well I would like to get into sci-fi in this group more certainly. My tastes however require that the sci-fi either has really realistic feel (as if it could happen in the real world - take Nolan's Batman films for example or his Inception as an idea) or it has to be out there with starships in Stargate or Star Wars style.

Okay, I forgive you and concede everything except the Star Wars stuff. Star Trek all the way, Mate, or are you one of those Redshirt people?
