Wait, what are they?

We are currently doing nomination for our November group read. You are also welcome to add topics e.g. start a discussion on your favorite sf/f in Book Discussions folder.

I'm plenty older now, but still love this genre. More recently, I've been delving into Steampunk, but i'm always on the lookout for good recommendations.
I 'm curious to see what book will be chosen for November. I'm looking forward to the discussions!

Welcome to all the newly arrived and well met. Lord of the Rings is the baseline for all modern fantasy Steph. I do hope you enjoy reading them.

It's been quite some time since I've read them, but when I was in my early teens, I read them so often that after a while I didn't even read them from from to back. I'd just pick up a book in the series, open it to a random page and start reading. A lot of writers nowadays try to write in ways that are non-Tolkien, but he'll always be the foundation of the genre.

Maybe you can try school or public libraries. Before last year most of the books I read were from school libraries.

I love stories where good triumphs over evil and "the little guy" (or gal) CAN make a difference on their world. My favorite book is "The Ladies of Mandrigyn" by Barbara Hambly.

I'm Tyrone and i live in Cornwall, which is a beautiful area of the UK.
I've always been a huge reader and my proudest memory related to reading was having read every single book in the lower school library and having to be 'escorted' weekly to the upper school library where i discovered Sci-fi and Fantasy. Some of the books i found there, such as The Hobbit, The Tripods Series by John Christopher, The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper and the John Wyndham novels, are still amoung my favourites and periodically re-read.
Later, i used to have to walk home from school past the local Library so i stopped by almost everyday and was able to explore the books ranging from 194o's & 50's space opera to the epic fantasy series by all the big authors from the 80's and 90's.
More recently i have been delving into the originators of the genres. People like Wells, Verne, Dunsay and Co and i have to keep reminding myself that these books are not cliched becuse it was these authors that orginated the tropes that we all take for granted.
While i could trot out lots of impressive authors who i could name as my favourites, i have to be honest with my bookshelves...The two authors for whom i have every book they have had published (that i can get hold of) are David Gemmell, may he Rest in Peace, and Harry Harrison.
Most recently i have discovered the books of Peter Hamilton and Richard K Morgan. As i also like Crime and Thriller novels and these guys have dabbled in a bit of cross genre fiction giving me the best of both worlds.
I'm always grateful for recommendations of more Crime/ Thriller novels set in fantasy or Sci-fi setting...

Hi Renee! I, too, grew up reading those authors, and also greatly admire Joseph Campbell! Welcome aboard, I'm a newbie here too!

Here are some sf/f crime novels I can think of:
Neuromancer
The City & the City
The Yiddish Policemen's Union
As to less well-known ones I've recently read Archangel Protocol, I like it personally but I would expect many people might find it way too anvilicious.

Im Stuart, 34 from Glasgow, Scotland.
I love reading and seem to only read Sci-fi, horror, fantasy or steampunk.
My favourite authors are: Philip K Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, Tim Powers, Alfred Bester with a couple ive probably missed out.
My current three favourite books are (my opinion changes constantly on these :))
1.

2.

I'm Christopher, 42, from California. I work on a farm and write in my spare time. I like a lot of different genres, but epic fantasy is one of my favorites: Tolkien, Lewis, Le Guin, McKillip, McKinley.
Anyway, thanks for having me.

I'm Luis and I just moved the surface of the sun (the locals call it Arizona for some odd reason). Writing has been a passion of mine but being a Marketing Analyst is what's currently paying my bills. I'm really big on the sci-fi and superhero genre of books but I'll read almost anything if it's recommended.
Stan Lee is my biggest inspiration as well as my personal hero both in writing and personality.
Currently, I'm patiently awaiting the release of my first novel which is scheduled for publication in December.
I'm very happy to be a part of the group! Thanks for the invite.
