Good Morning! I'm Michael, an author and avid reader. I am a HUGE fan of the epic and heroic story - especially fantasy. I love stories of those who must overcome the odds and fight for victory. As I'm new to Goodreads, I'm excited to find groups that correspond to my interests. I look forward to reading more posts from this group.Michael Duncan, Author: Shadows: Book of Aleth, Part One

Hello, I'm Lorrie and I'm 34. I love any book with a good story. I do have a passion for science fiction and fantasy a bit more because of a summer with my grandparents when I was younger, where they let me read any book I wanted among their vast collection of books. I could be found often curled up in a corner of the house or outside with one of their many books. Now, I have my own vast shelves of books and I've been enjoying letting my daughters read the books that interest them, and finding more new books for myself. I've also introduced my husband to some books, he has a great passion for reading as much as I do. :)
Hello all,I'm Heather, a lifelong sci fi / fantasy fan, and now a writer of same. I have a steampunk novel (Timepiece) currently on the Goodreads shelves, and I am always on the lookout for more cool things to read and people with whom to discuss cool things I've read... can't wait to explore this group further!

Hi, I'm Samantha Savage and I LOVE heroic fantasy and Science-fiction! I also have been meaning to read Lord of the Rings because I love the movies and JRR Tolkien is a legend! I haven't read them yet because my class is reading To Kill a Mockingbird so I haven't had time to read anything else. I'm so glad I finally found a group that is about my favourite genres!
o.o I feel kind of dumb now... I accidentally clicked "leave this group" instead of "sci-fi and heroic fantasy"... so I guess i am new again :)
I'm Veronica and I love what to me are the classics of fantasy of all time, mentioned in this group (Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, etc.)And I am also a huge fan of sci-fi books about dystopian societies. I'm excited to join, so wish you success, or as the Chinese say, 祝你成功.
Some subtitles would be appreciated Veronica. But welcome to the group from someone who often isn't here. Being that you like fantasy and things Chinese, I might suggest you read the section called "White Tigers" in Maxine Hong Kingston's "The Woman Warrior." The novel is a little like Amy Tan's books about daughters of Chinese mothers growing up in America and the section I mentioned above is seemingly an escapist fantasy in which the young woman narrating the book (the author) is trained by Taoist Immortals to become a warrior. Food for thought if you haven't already read it. There's also Under Heaven by Guy Percival but to be honest, that book begins to unravel the farther you to into it.

The last two also have some dystopia elements:)
Hello,My name is Michael, and I hail from Fairfax VA. I'm an author of Epic Fantasy (The Riyria Revelations is hitting the street next week) from Orbit (Fantasy Imprint of Hachette Book Group). I'm glad to have found this group.
Thanks Ritesh - All in all signs are looking positive. It's been #1 or #2 on Amazon's Hot New Releases for Historical Fantasy and in the top 10 for Hot New Releases for Epic Fantasy - It's a very exciting time.
Lol, no you're not ignorant the book is very new Theft of Swords is officially released November 23rd but the books are already nationwide on the shelves. The ebook will change from pre-order status in 3 days!!
The books are based on some books that I self published: The Crown Conspiracy, Avempartha, Nyphron Rising, The Emerald Storm, Wintertide which were publsihed from Oct 2008 - Oct 2010.
Oh yeah...I should have mentioned that...The books were originally written as a six book series (the covers shown in the second grouping. Orbit is releasing the series as a trilogy. They are putting 2 of the original books in each one so while the books are "brand new" they are have a huge existing fan base as many read them in their "Ridan" incarnations. So it goes like this:
Theft of Swords: The Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha
Rise of Empire: Nyphron Rising and The Emerald Storm
Heir of Novron: Wintertide and Percepliquis
The series was bought before Percepliquis hit the market so in January when Heir of Novron comes out there will also be stand alone versions of Percepliquis (but only for a short while the it will be put "out of print" like the other 5.
Well thanks so much Ritesh...now I want to give back could you please pick an author who you think is sometimes overlooked and shoot me their name...I'd love to purchase a book of theirs as a way of giving back.
Welcome, new members! I'm Alexandra, YA author and reader. :D

Hey Marks (squared). Welcome - and I wish you tons of success in your writing. This profession is a hard one to be sure but the rewards are more than worth the struggles.
Hello, just joined the list. Always have enjoyed heroic fantasy. Just reviewed Karl Edward Wagner's CONAN: ROAD OF KINGS:http://www.z7hq.blogspot.com/2011/12/...
Hello. I just joined. I'm a writer and publicist. I'm exploring Good Reads. And I'm curious to see what everyone is reading these days in the genres that I usually read myself and in the genres that I help publicize books.
Hi, I'm Kea. I'm a big LOTR fan, too. Also enjoy sci-fi and one of my favorites is the Planet Pirates series by Anne McCaffrey. I'm an author of my own sci-fi fantasy series....well, Book One just came out. (If you're interested, check out my profile.)I think what I love about heroic fantasy most is the way the weak and trod upon rise above it all and find more inside of themselves. Bilbo, Sassinak, Harry Potter sort of make you think, "Damn...if they could get out of their own way, maybe I can, too!:
Haha, same here. Last year I resolved to do my homework and read more books. What a dummy I was.... The first month went ok bookwise.... I'm not even gonna talk about my homework...
Hello, I'm Hugh. I've been reading a lot of good Sci-Fi, and I'm a long time lover of Epic Fantasy, though most of my tastes are prettty "old school." Lately I've been exploring Urban Fantasies some but my reading roots are with Space ships or swords and scorcery.

Hi Lorenzo, we do have some book discussions and some of them are on popular works like The Mists of Avalon or Earthsea, and you're welcome to set up any new discussion topics. On the other hand, none of them seem to be active since last December, so it would be nice if someone can lead discussions somehow.

As you can guess, like many another pro writer who joins a group like this, I've done so partly with the nefarious goal of self-promotion. But I will strive not to relentlessly spam the group with announcements of my new releases and stuff like that.
