Ruth Thanks Marjorie. It will be nice to be able to discuss books of this genre. Most people when I tell them I like SF look at me like I have 2 heads or something. lol.

It isn't that you have two heads, its the blood and the big knife.  It makes them think you'll be acquiring a second head.

ROFLMAO!!! Someone's going "shopping" are we? (reference here to Cordelia Naismith at the end of Cordelia's Honor. She takes "shopping" to a high art form.

Of course, when he asked for a few minutes alone with her, someone mutters 'Brave man', but really, what's life without a little excitement?

It certain did make for a hard gift to top on their one year anniversary (giggle) The Admiral's Captain wasn't dangerous...unless you upset her :) Oh and armed her. Just remove all sharp objects (and stunners and other chargeable weapons) before spending time alone with Cordelia and she's fine company! Entertaining, even.

Try Patricia McKillup's Riddle-Master: The Complete Trilogy ; The Riddle-Master of Hed; Heir of Sea and Fire; Harpist in the Wind.  Highly recommended.

Jim Butcher did a series you might like, the first novel of which is Furies of Calderon

And though they're stand-alones rather than series books, and sf rather than fantasy, do give Robert Heinleins's juveniles from the fifties a try: Have Space Suit—Will Travel, The Star Beast, Tunnel in the Sky, Rocket Ship Galileo, Citizen of the Galaxy ... there are more, but that enough to get you started.

Finally, welcome!  I'd offer you a virtual drink, but this isn't Baen's Bar,  another site you might like.

Mel Sabre (melsabre) | 3 comments Hi all, my name is Mel and I love the worlds that C.S Lewis and Tolkien conjured up.

message 512: by Brad (new)

Brad | 4 comments Hi, I'm Brad. I've been reading scify/fantasy for more than four decades. It started with DC and Marvel comics (at $.15 each). Early on I picked up on Norton, Heinlein and Asimov, then of course Tolkien. I'm anxiously awaiting the final book of "Wheel of Time". Brandon Sanderson has done a wonderful job of completing Robert Jordan's epic series, as well as writing his own stories.

Would that we all had wardrobes of our own eh? I still get a little choaked up when I watch Lion, Witch, Wardrobe and they are walking through that snow covered forest. Awesome stuff!

message 517: by Tz (new)

Tz Hi Guys, I'm Toby and my introduction to scyfy/fantasy fiction started with Tolkien, Lewis, and Card but didn't truly become a passion until i started reading game of thrones. that was about 8 years ago. Since then I've come to love the genre and my favorite authors are Martin, Sullivan, Rothfuss, and Cook. Part of the reason I joined the group is I saw that you were reading The Black Company, one of my all time favorites that i have recently reread as well.
Other notes, i'm a 21 year old college students and have started to prefer audiobooks over reading books
It's exciting to see other people who've read or are reading these books, it gives me someone to talk to!

K.L. Coones | 5 comments I cut my fantasy teeth on the Dragonlance series. HAHA, I was in high school, what did you expect! j/k, they were great stories.

I've always loved the sword and sorcery stuff, but my writing endeavors have kept pretty much to the YA swath of fantasy so far. When I am not knee deep in golbins(what the hell is a golbin? IDK!), I am a racing junkie (formula 1 and road racing) and chasing my dog around. He's the coolest dog in the world and defies any attempt at identifying his pedigree, haha

Nice to be with you guys and I look forward to slaying many dragons with you, figuratively of course!

message 521: by Duane (new)

Duane Simolke (duanesimolke) Hi! I live in Lubbock, Texas. I love sf/f books, movies, and TV shows. Out of science fiction or fantasy, I tend to prefer science fiction, but just barely. I couldn't pick a favorite writer.

P.S. Mokha (mokha) | 11 comments Hi all
I'm PS Mokha, a Londoner now living in the New Zealand wilds. Hard not to mention Lord of The Rings at this point, but I'll resist (doh!).

Looking forward to connecting with like minded readers. Just finished my first novel and blown away by the 4.93 overall review score so far (honest - search for The Last Sanctuary in Goodreads).

I'm writing the sequel in a house beside Lismore Forest with no mains water, no street lighting and no sewerage. I do have a computer and internet, so it's a perfect and inspirational space to write.

Looking forward to good times and thanks for having me.

David Bateman | 1 comments Hi all
My name is David im in the sunny UK, im new to all that's involved in books and reading as we never really clicked. But within the last year decided to give to Demon Cycle series just out of pure chance and loved the two books. Since then as soon as one book is finished I have had to find another and another as im sure you all know, once you have the bug there is know stopping.

I have read though Demon Cycle series, mistborn, hunger games, and finding that im going through them very fast as I just cant put the books down when i start. I joined as I can see that the way of kings has been on topic and loved this as well as some others i have read, some i did not recognise on the list so im very much looking forward to your recommendations thank you

I have always adored reading these types of books and watching shows and movies that fall within those categories. My favorite Fantasy book is Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, but I also love Tolkien's books, C.S. Lewis' books, H.P. Lovecraft's tales, and tons more. AM H (arialynx) Hi all, I just joined the group. I'm getting back into reading the classic sci-fi & fantasy that I enjoyed when I was younger (Tolkien, Lackey, Card, etc). I also getting into some newer sci-fi stuff. Most recent book I've read is the Knife of Never Letting go by Patrick Ness.

Welcome to the group! I quite like the entire series of the Knife of Never Letting Go. If you want recommendations for books to read check out our list here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...
And also feel free to participate in voting when we have our classic sci-fi/fantasy vote!

message 533: by AM H (new)

AM H (arialynx) Hi Jonathan, I found the Knife of Never Letting Go really depressing. Did you read the rest of the books? Are they as depressing?

message 534: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments I found The Knife of Never Letting Go quite dark and while the rest have that kind of element by the very end there is a sense of fulfillment in what happens.

message 535: by AM H (new)

AM H (arialynx) @Jonathan, ok, that I can handle what I didn't like in the first one was the killing off of one of the characters & then a bit later it seemed like it was for nothing. That pissed me off. LOL.

message 536: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Ah yeah there's a lot less main character deaths in the next two books as I can remember. The first is actually one of the weaker books in my view.

P.S. Mokha (mokha) | 11 comments Hi Sherwin

Do you have your book available in epub format? One good turn deserves another and I need to read then review your book!

If you don't have an epub format book, it can be easily done on Smashwords for free. Having your book on Smashwords means your book will be available via Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Sony and a host of other channels.

Keep up the busy life!
PS Mokha

Well, you know my opinion on the matter. Yes! I want to read books for free in exchange for writing a review...(if I like the book.) If I don't like the book I am hpappy to tell the author what I think they could improve. That is what I think...

Hi Susan
Have a look at the synopsis and reviews and if it's up your street I'll email a pdf, mobi or epub version depending on your mode of reading.

P.S. Mokha (mokha) | 11 comments Regarding the read to review - I guess we need an agreed format and someone to lead and organise the execution.

Given I have a vested interest (the review of my book) I may not be the best person to lead the charge.
Thoughts, anyone?

P.G. Bell Hi everyone. I'm Peter, and I live in Cardiff, UK. I've been a fan of sci-fi (both written and filmed) for as long as I can remember. I'm a big fan (and equally big critic) of Doctor Who, but love all things space opera: Babylon 5, Farscape, you name it.

I've only gotten into fantasy more recently, but have been enjoying the stories of Diana Wynne Jones, Neil Gaiman, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and others.

I'm an editor over at www.impossiblepodcasts.com, where I'm in charge of the "Stories In Print" thread. We put together discussions, interviews and articles on all sorts of sci-fi and fantasy literature, so I'm hoping to find plenty of inspiration and recommendations in this group!

Hi Peter
I studied Law up the road in Ponty, then lived in Cardiff where I was married in the church by the Owain Glyndwr pub. I now reside in the New Zealand wilds with my family and horses where I write YA fiction. I would love to contribute to your thread. Check out my book here on Goodreads to see if it is your cup 'o tea http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13....

I also have an author page on Goodreads where you can learn more about me. I also blog, etc, blah blah - you get the gist.

Let me know if I can be of help.
Cheers
PS Mokha
