Hello my name is David and I'm an avid reader of Scifi and fantasy also. Been reading scifi and fantasy since middle school. Really started getting into it when my family moved to a small rural town for my dads work. Since then its been a constant companion to me and carried me through decades of ups and downs. Some of my favorite reads from the past were; "The Circle of Life" series by Neil Hancock, all books from Robert Heinlien, The Belgarion by David Eddings and the Magicians Apprentice series by Raymond E Fiest. Some of the more modern books I've read recntly and enjoyed are In Her Name by Michael R Hicks, The Rhys Chronicle by Tracy Falbe and the Farseers books by Robin Hobb. I'm always looking for more good reads and I've got a huge history in thousands of books I've read since my middle school days. I'm looking forward to hearing from other people with the same interests in scifi and fantasy. :-)

Hello everyone, my name is Phillip and I'm happy to be a new member of the group. I enjoy reading sci-fi, fantasy, mythology and history.
Currently I am re-reading The Hobbit for probably the 111th time. :) but still enjoying it, love the LOTR as well.
I work professionally in the EMS services and am a published author of a sci-fi trilogy and a new fantasy series that I'm awaiting a release date on but should be early this upcoming year.
My favorite color is green and I HATE raw tomatoes.
Anyway, thank you for having me here--it's appreciated.

Sounds interesting, what do you call the language you created?
Harry Potter is a great series as well. My daughter had trouble with reading so I helped her by reading the entire series with her as the books were released. Now she reads well above her grade level and far more often than I do. :)

Good luck on that! I've been reading since the summer (with a bit of a hiatus), those books can be long. But yet, oh so very good. And you're right G33z3, the 8th just can't come soon enough. I'm sad that the only bookstore in my town was a Borders. Now I have to go on a quest to find a place to get it!

Hello. My name is Eli. I read mostly high fantasy, but a few other things from within the fantasy/sci-fi area may also sneak into my hands from time to time. I am a writer too, but have nothing published as yet. And then I run a blog where I review things. Mostly books.

My newest favourite book is 'The Name of the Wind'. Also greatly enjoyed the 'First Law' trilogy.

Hi, Eli, and welcome to the group! I look forward to reading your thoughts here. (Right now most of us are probably absorbed by the holidays. But soon I, at least, will be psyching up for A Memory of Light. (Judging from your "favorites" list, I'm guessing so are you!)

One of the organized activities in this group is selecting a few books for group reading and discussion each month. The polls to select the titles for January discussions are currently open, so please have a look and feel free to cast your vote for a title you'd be interested in discussing. (The short story category appears to be mostly science fiction stories nominated this month, sorry; but the contemporary and classic novel categories are more varied. And, the 3 fantasy works selected for December's discussions were all fantasy; since it's still December, if you'd like to share some thoughts on Zelazny's Amber or Sanderson's Elantris or The Emperor's Soul. (Not that comments on these topics ever expire.)

Oh, I voted already ;) I actually found this group under 'groups that are reading your to-read books' in the groups section. I would like to read the Brandon Sanderson books, but right now I am busy reviewing books for goodreads authors. I do hope to join on the group reads later on.

And yes, I am so ready to finally see the end of that series. It will be epic I am sure!

I've been a goodreads member for about a week and slowly going through my favourite books. Eventually I'll get round to ranking my least-favourite ones as well.

Obviously I like fantasy and science fiction, but I also like crime and some horror. I also read quite a bit of YA. I've usually got three books on the go at any one time.

I'm still not done with the whole series (I'm on book 9 - have been for ages!) so I won't be reading A Memory of Light until at least a couple of months after it's released.

Probably lucky. I started reading this series 22 years ago, so I am really eager for the conclusion! (As James Thurber once wrote, "he who hesitates is sometimes saved".) For what it's worth, I thought some of the books 8-11 began to drag a bit, too. I think it took me forever to get through Knife of Dreams (#11). The good news is the pace really picks up with The Gathering Storm, #12.)

I don't know. I wish I had picked it up earlier. But it is really hard to get good fantasy literature here. I got an e-reader last year because of that.

I actually found number 11 to be one of the better and faster ones. Only it came too late to help Jordan's final few books sadly...

The release of The Hobbit film has kick-started me into finally reading some J.R.R. Tolkien. I've always wanted to read The Lord of the Rings (ever since the films were around 10 years ago!) but didn't have the mature mental discipline to just sit down and enjoy them.

Anyway, I've joined this group for inspiration in finding other high fantasy novels (A Game of Thrones is already on my to-read list). I've always been a big sci-fi novel fan (particular the Star Wars expanded universe), so this group should cater to those tastes, too!

I remember the first time I read The Lord of the Rings (when I was a teen, back in the 1960s), and it was an incredible summer. I've vacationed in Middle Earth fondly several times since, and there are those who claim I've never actually returned to reality. I hope you find some good recommendations here. (Personally, I've devoted January to the Wheel of Time series, since the final book comes out next Tuesday.)

Hi, I'm Aaron. I avid reader of fantasy novels especially the gritty ones. The grayer the characters, the better. Favorite fantasy novel as of yet is Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana.

I am quite hooked to the golden boy trope in sff novels like in Ender's Game, Lies of Locke Lamora and The Name of the Wind. Also music in fantasy novels like in The Warded Man and The Name of the Wind(again!).

My name is Elizabeth and I'm 24 years old. I only recently discovered an interest in science fiction but have had an interest in fantasy for as long as I can remember. It took me ages to really venture beyond Star Wars and Star Trek into other science fiction novels. For the longest time, I avoided science fiction because I thought all of the books were like the above mentioned. I wasn't much of a Star Trek or Star Wars fan and didn't like science fiction because of it.

Anyway, enough babbling from me. I look forward to making new friends and taking part in some book discussions.

(Our group reading selections this month seem to all be science fiction of one sort or another - assuming one considers steam punk alternate history to be science fiction and not fantasy. The lines there often get blurry.)

I am a soon to retire pediatric nurse. I am an avid reader but my heart belongs to dragons and elves and tales of Merlin and the like. I'm retired myself (for a couple of years, now.) I've lots more time for reading since I gave up the distraction of work!

I'm also a pretty big fan of McCaffrey myself. I believe I've read all the Pern books she wrote herself (like Dune, it seems this series will survive its creator), and I've read the original six or seven novels more than once. And I've read much of her science fiction as well (Crystal Singer, and quite recently her The Planet Pirates trilogy.)

Howdy everyone. My name is Aaron, and I am addicted to Fantasy

I think I first realized that I had a problem when I sent out fake wedding invitations as an April fools joke one year, telling everyone that I was engaged to my favorite character (not telling, so don't ask).

However, instead of everyone reacting how I thought they would by saying "Hehe, that was pretty funny," most of them reacted with concern, thinking that I was serious and that I needed professional help.

That is when I thought, "Hmmm, If I'm giving off a vibe that makes people think I would do something like that seriously, I need to rethink my life a little bit."

I'm much more adjusted now, but I still keep a copy of the wedding invitation in my desk just to remind me not to over share when I meet new people.

Crap, I think I just over shared...
