Hi, jaw, and welcome aboard! I hope you'll join in on some of our discussions as well as find some ideas for new books to consider. As I mentioned recently, you might find our Recommendations folder a good place to start. It contains lists of member favorites in various sub-genre's of Science Fiction and Fantasy. I think the NPR's Listener Poll of Top 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy novels and the Locus Magazine Reader Poll of top SF&F are especially useful for SF&F readers looking for respected classics of the genre. (The Locus list notably separates Fantasy from Science Fiction, since you expressed a preference.)

Our bookshelf can also show you past winners of SF&F's annual Hugo Awardsand Nebula Awards for best novel each year since the 60s.

In addition, you might scan our Book Discussions folder for specific titles of interest. Add your comments to any of them you care to!

Sabrina Flynn Whoops, I forgot to introduce myself before posting. My name is Sabrina Flynn. I'm a long time SF/F reader and writer. Tad Williams is my favorite SF/F author. And the White Plume Mountain books by Paul Kidd is one of my favorite fantasy trilogies.

David Gaither (davidgaither) | 1 comments Good day ladies and gents. My name is David Gaither, and I am one of the many new self-published writers out there these days, just released an anthology of short stories—but that's not why I'm here. I'm here because I love heroic fantasy.

I'm a huge fan of all fantasy, but heroic and sword-and-sorcery has my heart. I've read a ton, but some of my favorites, in no particular order, include Tad Williams, David Gemmell, Joel Rosenberg, and Terry Brooks.

The similarity between these, and my own writing, is that although they are set in fantastical worlds that prod our imaginations, they are at their core character stories about larger-than-life heroes facing incredible odds and their own flaws. I have a degree in History, Military in focus, so I like to think that my stories present the rigors of mass combat and battle realistically, at least.

But I'm not here to about me. So just want to say, hello and greetings, I'm glad to be aboard.

Hi, David. Welcome to the group. I look forward discussing heroic fantasy with you.

Hmmm. Joel Rosenberg. I should dust off the old Guardians of the Flame series; it was a favorite of mine, once.

By the way, we were talking about Favorite Military Fantasy Novels last week. If your studies of history and heroic fantasy have led you to any interesting examples, please add some to our list!

We also invite authors to post information about their work in our Promotions folder. Good luck with your new anthology!

Marie Campbell (naivesuper) | 11 comments Hi, my name's Marie and I'm an Illustrator. I'm actually looking for a 'top 20 sci-fi books' lists for a personal project I'm working on - have I come to the right place, or could someone point me in the right direction please? Any help would be much appreciated...

Hi, Marie. Welcome.

Top 20 is rather subjective, but take a look at the NPR Listener Poll of Top 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy novels and the Locus Magazine Reader Poll of top SF&F, which ought to be a decent start. The latter separated SciFi from Fantasy.

Oh yay, another Tad Williams fan! David, do you have a time period that you focus on as far as military history? Or mostly an overview of all wars?

a "top 20" list? them's fightin words to hard core fans...no 2 fans will have the same list...and do you mean the best 20? the most important 20? or the best, most important ABOUT SF? the 20 best short story collections? dear me, the question is a impossable one...

Val Panesar | 28 comments Hey, I'm Val. I'm pretty new to goodreads and trawled through the groups list for quite a while before I stumbled on one that mentioned books that I recognise and respect (like Dune :) ) When I saw that Forever was also being currently discussed I figured "Y'know what? This is the group for me."
I'm a sci-fi/fantasy reader and also a self-publishing author. I'm sure I'll get round to showing my wares at some point in the appropriate sections.

Hi, Val, and welcome to both Goodreads and our group. I hope you find both interesting & worthwhile. We do have a number of Dune fans here. Some of us stopped reading when Frank died, and others soldiering on...

And I hope you join us in our current Forever War discussion topic. (The discussion seems to have petered out as everyone has had their say. Yet I remember when the book came out, how totally amazing its point of view was.) Each month we pick three different books for discussion: one Classic Novel, one Contemporary Novel, and one Short Story/novella/Anthology (our classic/contemporary dividing line seems to be somewhere around 1990 :) we welcome you to join into our current door any past book discussion that interest you.

We also invite authors to post about their work in our Promotions folder.

Hi, Rose. A warm welcome to the group. I look forward to seeing your comments in our discussion threads. We have a lot of past Book Discussions, all of which are still open and most could use a little new blood. (We select specific futire books to discuss via our Current Nominations folder.) And we also love talking about general topics in arguing about which books are best. Feel free to add your opinion anywhere!

And again, welcome to the group.

Val Panesar | 28 comments Thanks for the welcome Old Guy :)
I read one book past Frank Herbert's last and regretted it. I think I've almost washed House Atreides out of my mind now!
I'll certainly try to jump in on that Forever War discussion. I read it a while ago, but thought it was a great book with ideas that still feel original today.

I too prefer reading and writing material set in alternative worlds. Have you read the 'Eragon' series by Christopher Paolini? I highly recommend them. Please feel free to check my profile out sometime as I often post excerpts from my work too. :)

Bryce | 72 comments Howdy everyone! Names Bryce, just joined Goodreads not to long ago, stumbled upon it really, while in search of new books to read. I've been adding my library of books on here over the past few weeks or so , and decided to give the groups a quick once over and noticed this one seemed to fit my style of reading. My favorite author is probably Robin Hobb, and her Farseer trilogy, with Brandon Sanderson coming in a close second with the Mistborn books. I've read a whole slew of fantasy books, and I look forward to seeing what you all recommend!

Hi, Bryce, and welcome to our little corner of fantasyland. I hope you'll join in on some of our discussions. The group seems to like Brandon Sanderson in general and Mistborn in particular, but we haven't heard a whole lot about Robin Hobb lately. Please help us rectify that!

Hi, Joe, and Welcome to the SF&HF Group. We do all love science fiction here. Please join in any discussion that catches your interest.

As a fan of Starship Troopers, you might check out our current discussion of The Forever War , a counterpoint from a few decades later, and our discussion of Military SF. We also have an older discussion of Dune that could use some new thoughts!

Welcome aboard!

Joseph Kay (TheOnionKnight1) | 6 comments Excellent, looking forward to picking up some good discussion points once I get into some more sci-fi. Sci-fi is emerging as one of my favorite genres of late due to it's incredible capacity to transcend many genres (sociology, philosophy, technology, ethics). It is such a rich genre I wish I had picked up on earlier in life.

I look forward to discuss these and other sic-fi books with everyone.

Hi, Jason. Welcome to the group! I hope you'll join in on some of our discussions as well as find some useful recommendations within them.

If you are looking for ideas for SF/F to read, you might find our Recommendations folder a good place to start. It contains lists of member favorites in various sub-genre's of Science Fiction and Fantasy. You may find the NPR's Listener Poll of Top 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy novels and the Locus Magazine Reader Poll of top SF&F especially useful, but there are a lot of other useful lists in that folder as well. Plus, our Book Discussions folder has our group's own discussions of select books. (Each month we picked up three books, one classic novel, one contemporary novel, and a short story/collection, to discuss in detail.

And once again, welcome aboard!

Drew | 11 comments My name is Drew, and I am a recently-hired young adult librarian. I have a lot of experience with and passion for YA fantasy/sci-fi (Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson, Ender's Game, Leviathan trilogy, etc.). After recently reading A Princess of Mars and the first two books in the Song of Ice and Fire series, I've found that I would like to read more in the realm of adult fantasy/sci-fi. Your upcoming book discussions look like a good place to start!

Hi, Drew, and welcome to our group. I hope you find our current, past, and future Book Discussions informative, and also hope you'll join those discussions!

We're in the process of choosing a Contemporary SF/F novel to read and discuss together later this month. You can participate in the Selection Poll if you have a preference from among the nominees. And we're also collecting nominations for our next Classic SF/F novel to read as well. Feel free to add your own suggestion if you like.

And once again. welcome!
