Leon (leonpr) | 1 comments Hey everyone. Leon here. I'm 26 and spend at least 6 months of the year travelling to new parts of the world so that gives plenty of time stuck in airports, on buses/trains, generally kicking about to read ;)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Welcome Leon, I hope you find some worthwhile fantasy and sci-fi to read!

message 555: by David (new)

David Sarkies (dasarkies) | 5 comments Hi, I've been reading fantasy and science-fiction books since I was probably about 12 years old, however I have become a bit tired of the roleplaying and tv-tie ins that tended to dominate my reading in the past.
These days I like fantasy with a difference and science-fiction, especially that which delves into the realm of philosophy. I especially love books that were written in the bygone ages, my favourite of all time being The Odyssey.

message 556: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Hey there David, I hope you like the group! Interesting to hear that you love books written in the past such as the Odyssey!

message 557: by Doyle (new)

Doyle Wren | 4 comments I've been reading fantasy/sci-fi since I was about 8-9, actually started with The Hobbit (looking back I'm not sure how I finished that at such a young age). I'm now 36 and still haven't stopped reading. I've branched into new mediums (e-books, audio, etc.), but still love to feel and turn the pages of a real book.

Mat (matclaxton) | 2 comments Hello, my name is Mat, and I am from Nova Scotia, Canada. I am a huge fantasy fan. I am currently hooked on David Gemmell books, but I also really enjoy Robert Jordan, Stephen Lawhead, Terry Brooks and Terry Goodkind.

message 562: by Harsh (new)

Harsh Verma Hi Mat! We share common authors as favourites.

message 563: by James (new)

James Bishop (JamesBishop001) | 4 comments Hi, I'm James Bishop. I got started with fantasy when I was a kid in Jr. High, and read a book called The Lord of Chaos by Elizabeth Boyer. I picked it up because it had these cool wolf-warriors on the cover, and I've been voracious ever since.

I love the classics like Tolkien and Asimov, but as of right now I'm anxiously awaiting A Memory of Light to wrap of the Wheel of Time series.

I live in Boise, ID working at a real job while I slowly promote my book.

Cheers everyone.

message 564: by Yaz (new)

Yaz (yazsporrong) hello. I'm Yaz, live in the UK. I got started in fantasy with David Eddings Belgarion and Malloreon series when I was 8 and never looked back. Tried several times to read LOTR but I just can't get through them! Shame cos I really want to like them! I don't get to read much anymore as I have a little baby but love to read what people say about different books. Last fantasy stuff I read was Brent Weeks night angel trilogy and really enjoyed them. look forward to discussions in here tho I must admit I haven't read that many hero fantasy books yet. :) ta! x

message 565: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Hey there James I'm also looking forward to A Memory of Light! And welcome also Yaz I hope you can find some good fantasy to read!

message 566: by Nelleke (new)

Nelleke (nellekie) | 5 comments Hello, I am Nelleke, 30, from the Netherlands. Biologist, 2 cats, boyfriend and collector of books :).
My favourite genres are classics (19th century) and fantasy. I love Tolkien, David Eddings and Robert Jordan. Because this year I want to read all the wheel of time books, I can't read anything else in the same genre. But I'm always looking for good suggestions.

message 567: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Welcome to the group Nelleke. I'm going through a re-read of The Wheel of Time before January if possible...

message 569: by Raven (new)

Raven | 9 comments Welcome Nelleke... I too will soon start wheel of time...you should try Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series,I think you might like his writing style and the characters are fun to get to know.

message 570: by James (new)

James Bishop (JamesBishop001) | 4 comments I really liked the Sword of Truth through book 5, then I had a hard time appreciating it as much as when it was fresh. Certainly not dogging Terry Goodkind or anyone else who enjoys the entire series, I just really thought the quality was superior prior to Soul of the Fire.

message 571: by harshini (new)

harshini (watchmeread) Hi I am Harshini I am 15 years old, and love fantasy books and manga. I really love sci-fi, but I would love to read more of it :)

Hi James, I am with you on the Sword of Truth series. But most things get a little tiring after the fourth or 5th book. The Wheel of Time is an exception, same with Robert Jordan. I am re-reading the DUNE series by Frank Herbert. It is such a classic but I really only love the first three of the series.

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Hey there Natasha I hope you enjoy the group. I hope that The Hobbit is as good as Lord of the Rings was at least!

D.E.M. Emrys (d_e_m_emrys) | 5 comments Hello there!

I'm David, or D (pen name D. E. M. Emrys). I'm a reader/reviewer/blogger/writer. My favourite read is a g gritty fantasy novel. I particularly like the works of David Gemmell and Michael J Sullivan.

I've just released my first story From Man to Man as an ebook (available on amazon, smashwords, and here on goodreads).

I look forward to sharing my reviews and stories with you!

From Man to Man by D.E.M. Emrys

message 576: by Nick (new)

Nick My name is nick, I'm 12, I read a lot of fantasy and stuff, like Harry Potter, I love Lord of the Rings, read them a few times now, also liked the Eragon series and I just started The Earthsea Quartet and the Lyonesse trilogy.
I'm also interested in writing and I write stories in my spare time.

message 577: by Jonathan , Reader of the fantastic (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments Welcome Nick, sounds like you've found a love for some of the good YA fantasy around! Also some of the classics, hope you find some more and some sci-fi too!

Hey Tania as well, I also like the fact that everyone in the group helped pitch in to add to that list!

message 578: by Lee (new)

Lee (leehl) | 4 comments Hello, I'm Lee. I'm a pretty serious sci-fi/fantasy geek - mostly books, but also movies/TV, and whatever category Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog falls into ... Fair warning: I've never posted comments before, so I may need coaching or correction in the etiquette, but should have no problems following the handily-displayed group rules - except, clearly, that thing about "stay on topic" -or correct spelling, if I spelled "etiquette" wrong). However, when I saw the recommendations list had most of my favorite authors, I had to jump in. Great to see the classics as well as the newer stuff. I humbly submit Brust's Vlad Taltos series (Jhereg) and everything by Brent Weeks (a bit gritty for some). I'll have some questions around other specific books that folks are reading, but I've already been reminded of some books I've been meaning to read - and that was long enough of an "intro"

Hey Lee, well a lot of us tend to ramble on a little anyway. Just keep to the general principle of etiquette and you're fine!

message 580: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, all! I'm an old guy using the additional free time of retirement to catch up on all the science fiction and fantasy I didn't have enough time to read back when I was working.

I began reading science fiction back in the 1950s with Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, and Anderson. I was raised in Middle Earth, the Hyborian Age, and I've lived in Lankhmar, Earthsea, Pern, Amber, Riverworld, Arakis, Ankh-Morpork, Andor, Terre D’Ange and the Final Empire. I've visited Mars with Burroughs, Heinlein, Bradbury, and Robinson. I've fought interstellar wars with Heinlein, Haldeman, Drake, Weber, Card, Moon, Scalzi and Campbell. I've seen the future of Wells, Orwell, Huxley, Dick, Miller, Niven, Simak, Stephenson, Stewart, Stross, Bacigalupi, Collins and Westerfeld. These days I seem to meet more werewolves, vampires, and fae than I used to. So it goes.

I hope to partake of your communal wisdom.

(After a year on Goodreads, I'm finally joining a couple of groups.)

Currently I live in California, juggle two jobs (restaurant manager and officer in the Army Reserves), a family, and am attempting to scratch my way into the writing world. I am very fond of a good series; my favorites are Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, the Dresden Files, Artemis Fowl, the Hunger Games, and anything relating to Star Wars and/or Super heroes.

Hi, Brae! Always nice to hear another voice.

To see what you'd written, I put your name into Amazon's search. (Yes, the logical thing would have been to just click on your name and check your Goodreads profile to discover The Orb of Truth, but that would've been smart.) Amazon decided I must've meant "Brave Wyckoff" and offered me a recent Pixar DVD instead. Now I have this redhead teenage girl image in my head. Sorry. :)

Hi G33z3r,
Yeah, since the movie Brave came out and the recent release of my book, it brings that up but right next to it it asks if you truly meant "brae wyckoff"...click that and my book will appear. Nice to meet you.

Mathew Carruthers | 10 comments I don't remember not being able to read, so books are among my oldest friends. I read just about everything - but am especially fond of sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries and thrillers. I also like vintage cookbooks and how-to books. Reading is not all I do in my spare time, though. I collect, restore, and use vintage cameras, vintage tools, fishing gear, and other things. I like cooking, canning, and brewing my own beer.

Hi, Matthew. Welcome to the group.

Do you do any crossover between your SF&F reading and your other hobbies, such as restoring vintage robots or brewing Hobbiton Ales? :)

I do read a little steampunk now and then - does that count?

Close enough. I really need to read more steampunk myself. Which gives me an idea for a January group read nomination in the contemporary novel category!
