Mojca | 1414 comments 2011 A-Z Friends Challenge

Read 26 books from your friends' bookshelves whose names/nicknames start with the letters of the alphabet (your friends, not their shelves.:) You can read a book from any of their shelves but it would be nice to read a book they already liked and enjoyed (that would allow you to get to know each other better.)

For the letter "X", any friend with the letter X in his/her name is acceptable. However, if you are missing any letters, you can always pick another member of this group.

Mojca | 1414 comments RRRC Monthly Challenge - May Monthly Challenge

Challenge duration: 1 - 31 May (2011)
Challenge complete on May 8.

1. M is for May:
1.1 Read a book that starts with the letter M or the author's last name starts with an M.
Shadowfever (Fever, #5) by Karen Marie Moning Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning — 05/01

1.2 Read a book with a cover that makes you say, "Mmmmm!" and you have to post a link to that drool worthy cover so we all know what makes you drool.
1.3 Read a m/m romance where the one of the lead character's names start with M.

2. Birthday:
2.1 Read a book from a May B-day celebrant’s GR bookshelf.
Love Slave for Two (Love Slave for Two, #1) by Tymber Dalton Love Slave for Two by Tymber Dalton (Happy B-day, Dee.) — 05/08

2.2 Read a book from a May B-day celebrant’s GR bookshelf whose “day” falls on the same “day” as yours. If no one has the exact same day, then go for the closest date.
2.3 Read a book rated four or five stars with which you are completely unfamiliar from a May B-day celebrant’s GR bookshelf whose “day” falls on the same “day” as yours. If no one has the exact same day, then go for the closest date.

3. Geography:
3.1 Read a book whose author, setting or character is from India (I know it's a hard one, but remember I didn't pick it).
3.2 Read a book whose author, setting, AND characters are from India.
Otroci polnoči (Delova zbirka - Vrhunci stoletja #41) by Salman Rushdie Otroci polnoči by Salman Rushdie — 05/05

5. Mother May I:
5.1 Read a book where the heroine is a mother.
Kiss of Darkness (Shadowmen #3) by Jennifer St. Giles Kiss of Darkness by Jennifer St. Giles — 05/02

5.2 Read a book where the hero or heroine spends the book searching for or trying to get to their mother.
5.3 Read a BDSM book. (After all, isn't BDSM all about one person following the commands of another person and trusting that they will get you where they want to go? So it's really like a full contact adult version of Mother May I.).

6. "Mayday mayday mayday! We're going down!":
6.1 Read a book with a rescue worker of some type (coast guard, fireman, EMT are examples).
Cavanaugh Reunion (Cavanaugh Justice #19) (Silhouette Romantic Suspense #1623) by Marie Ferrarella Cavanaugh Reunion by Marie Ferrarella — 05/04

6.2 Read a book where the h/h are marooned or otherwise stranded and in need of rescuing.
6.3 Read a book where the h/h are involved in a plane crash or a shipwreck (bonus points if they actually use the term "Mayday mayday mayday!").

7. April showers bring May flowers (and what do Mayflowers bring? Pilgrims!):
7.1 Read a book with a picture of a flower on the front cover.
Seduced by Virginia Henley Seduced by Virginia Henley — 05/05

7.2 Read a book about a religious colony.
7.3 Read a book about a religious colony with a picture of flowers on the front cover.

8. Maybe if things had been different... Maybe things will change in the future.... The world is full of maybes, might bes, and might have beens:
8.1 We're talking alternate realities here. Read a contemporary book where something is different in the world than what reality reflects. Maybe vampires do exist. Maybe magic is real. This might just be the easiest category ever.
8.2 Alternate futures are only slightly more challenging. That is a time filled with maybes. Read a book set in the future.
8.3 Past alternative realities might be the toughest. What if something was different in the past? Steampunk? What if the Axis won WWII? Read a historical with an alternative reality.
His Dark Desires (Trevelyan #1) by Jennifer St. Giles His Dark Desires by Jennifer St. Giles — 05/02

9. Friday the 13th!:
9.1 Since Friday the 13th is said to be a day of misfortune and bad luck, read a book with luck or fortune or something along those lines in the title.
9.2 Since the date has become associated with a certain mass murdering psychopath, read a book that would be considered HORROR or at least a scary book.
Silver Falls by Anne Stuart Silver Falls by Anne Stuart — 05/04

9.3 Read a horror book with a 'luck' title.

10. Reader's Choice.
The Golden Barbarian by Iris Johansen The Golden Barbarian by Iris Johansen — 05/03

Mojca | 1414 comments RRRC's 2nd Reading Tournament: The Name Game Edition

Tournament Duration: May 1, 2011 - October 31, 2011

Tournament rules:
* A maximum of 4 names from each book
* Books must be at least 150 pages
* Rereads are fine
* Audiobooks are fine
* Please note the date that you finished the book
* Slight spelling differences to the names are fine, but not the diminutive/shortened name. Eg Katherine/Catherine is fine; Kathy/Cathy is not if the name to be checked off is 'Katherine'.
* If you are searching for Katherine and the character is called 'Kat' BUT it is made clear that her full first name is actually 'Katherine', then that fine.
* If you are searching for a name that may already be a shortened form of a longer name, eg Anna, but the character's actual name is Annabel - as long as the character is actually called 'Anna' during the course of the book, then that is fine.
* You can sign up any time before 31st October; you can post books read before sign up BUT all of these books must have been read within the tournament's stated timeframe.
* Lists may be posted in advance or as you go. You may swap books on your list (if pre-posted) at any time.
* Books read may be used in other challenges.
* The person with the most names checked off by 31 October WINS!

Bonus themes:
You may create your own cocktails and match this to your chosen book.

If you plan to have a huge drinking session, you must drink read a book from each of the listed categories before you start over again (25 in total excluding any chosen bonus books).

If you encounter a book during your drinking reading session that was so bad that you want to forget it, feel free to add this as a bonus book to challenge, categorizing it under one of the following drinks: Hurlmaker, FYU (F*ck You Up), Swampwater, Afterbirth or Vulcan Mind Grip.

Level Selection rules:
*You must select your level before you start the challenge
*Once you select your level, you cannot move up or down without penalty. You have until 15 July to make sure you are happy with your level selection.
*The penalty - You may apply to me to finish your bar session early if you have bitten off more than you can chew (eg. you have been aiming for stomach pumped but you can't even get tipsy - face it: you aren't as 'p*ss-fit' as you thought!). This session would show in the summary thread as 'incomplete'. But, if you wanted to, you could then start a new session as the team-driver, aiming for 'Stone-cold sober'.
*Some of you may decide to have a few big nights out, so that once you have achieved your desired level of intoxication you can go home and return the next night with a new alcoholic target. The new target must be new books but may involve your preferred drinks.
*As clarification - just because you have been 'tipsy' and 'drunk', that will not qualify you to be shown as 'passed out'.

Note: If you do apply to me to go home early, I want a really good excuse - eg the school yard bully from 30 years ago has just shown up and you are scared to drink in his/her presence...

General rules:
*Books from other challenges may be used
*Rereads are fine
*Book length of at least 100 pages
*Audiobooks are fine
*You can start drinking reading at any time within the stated period, but must not start before 15 July 2011 and must have completed your last book by 30 June 2012
*Your list may be posted in advance or as you go. You may swap books on your list if you have pre-posted.
