Series Read

At the moment, I have two series I want to read in 2011. Well, many more than two, but two specific series that I've heard a bunch of good things about this year and decided to dive in.

Anyone is welcome to join me! I'll post my updates here, if you'd like to join me in reading these series, please do. If you'd like to list a series of your own to read thru to the current release, you're welcome to do that instead/as well.

There are no set dates for this challenge. But, I am aiming to complete both series by the end of 2011.

ETA: Challenge Rules ... There are none. :) If you'd like to join in, you can read 1+ series. You can start now or in 2011. It's all up to you. The only "requirement" here is that you read a series from beginning (or close to it) to the current release. If you decide to run your challenge through 2012, you can read up to a 2012 release, etc.

It's okay, embrace the freedom! LOL! Thanks for joining me! This way I'll stay motivated to read/finish the two I've listed. :D

Dark Hunter is pretty ambitious. I have only read book Fantasy Lover. It is on my "I know I should" list. I need to post on that topic LOL. :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments YAY! Yep, these are two series I haven't yet started. Ya'll feel free to add any you'd like to read from book #1 or early on in series. Don't have to read two, can read more or less. All up to you, it's your self-challenge. :)

Dark-Hunter is a perfect example of why I'm starting these two now. You never know how long a series will go on for. If I get a lot of recs for a series that has 10+ books, I get intimidated and am likely to pass it over for either one I'm already reading or a new one with less books to get current. Bad, but true.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments I might join but I going to see how December start out at work

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I think I've been a little over-ambitious with the 2011 challenges, but there are several series I'd like to read. Like Sandra, I'll be back in a month.

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments No worries, Vivian. Sign up anytime. I posted here so I stay motivated to get started and keep with them.

I'm cross-challenging a ton of books for 2011. Haven't included these (two series above), but I'm sure they'll be added at some point.

Josie, you can start anytime. This one can start/end whenever you'd like. I may start reading some of mine in Dec, will just see how things go.

Steph (angel4492) | 32697 comments Welcome, Lisa MH & Roberta! You guys don't have to go for two series, unless you want to. I'll edit the 1st post to clarify a bit, but this one is a "whatever you'd like" kinda thing. Read one series, read 10, it's all up to you. :)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

The only "requirement" here is that you read a series from beginning (or close to it) to the current release.

The first series that popped into my head was BDB, although I've read the first three. Is that close enough to the beginning? :)

Stacy (stacybinnj) | 55 comments Glad to see Kim Harrison's books show up! I'm reading them right now pretty much back to back. I didn't add it to this challenge because I only have 2 left (For a Few Demons More and White Witch, Black Curse). I'm REALLY loving the series.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Stacy, I got the fifth book of her Hollows series a while back, but I never really made time to get the rest of them (hate reading a series out of order.) Mabye I should though, I'm kind of curious. :)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Sign me up! I can think of at least 5 or 6 series right off the top of my head. Ones where either I want to see what the hype is all about or I've read the first book and want to read the rest but just haven't found the time. I think what I'll do is create a list of series and make my goal to finish at least two. If I finish more than two, so much the better.

I'll post my series decisions once I've had a chance to gather them together.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Great list Awesomevegan.

About Chronicles of Narnia. What you have above is the "accepted" reading order now, but it's not the order I would use. They were originally published in a completely different order and when I read them the reading order was as follows:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia, #1) by C.S. Lewis The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Prince Caspian (Chronicles of Narnia, #2) by C.S. Lewis Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader" (The Chronicles of Narnia, #3) by C.S. Lewis The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair (Chronicles of Narnia, #4) by C.S. Lewis The Silver Chair
The Horse and His Boy (Chronicles of Narnia, #5) by C.S. Lewis The Horse and His Boy
The Magician's Nephew (Chronicles of Narnia, #6) by C.S. Lewis The Magician's Nephew
The Last Battle (Chronicles of Narnia, #7) by C.S. Lewis The Last Battle

Quite a few years ago, "they" decided the reading order should be chronoligical by Narnia time rather than by publishing history. Some people argue that this is the order Lewis wrote and intended them to be read, but that's not correct. Neither order listed here is the order he began or finished writing the books in, but publication date more closely follows the writing list. Also, if I had read Magician first, I don't know that I would have been hooked. It's not nearly as engaging as LWW. Disney movie producers have been smart and used the publishing order so far, following Lucy & company's adventures. Personally, any time I reread the series, I use the order I listed. The first four books follow the Pevensie children, family & friends as they discover and explore Narnia. The Horse and His Boy takes place during the reign of the Pevensie children in Narnia, but they are minor secondary characters. The focus of the story is obviously the horse and his boy. The Magician's Nephew goes back to the founding of Narnia, but it assumes you already know some basic information about Aslan and the land revealed in earlier books. The Last Battle takes place in a future Narnia/Earth and wraps up the series; there's no dispute that it should be read last.

Sorry if I bored you, 30 years later and I'm still passionate about these books. LOL. Hope you enjoy them.

No, no! You didn't bore me at all. I actually have the set with the covers you have listed. :) They belonged to my brother when he was a little boy so they are sentimental. I believe that is the way they are numbered in the set and that is how I will read them. I will change my list. I hope people join me in reading them. I am going to continue with Voyage of the Dawn Treader to follow the movie order as well.

I like the idea of starting with two, but keeping it going if you/we complete our initial goal. I'm all for it.

Welcome to the challenge, guys! Lots of great series listed! Can't wait to hear what everyone thinks of them.

I'm adding ... If I start a series (completely new2me) and don't like book #1 (1-2★), I will remove that series from the list and add another in it's place. I'm hoping that won't happen, but ya never know.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Awesomevegan and Josie. Glad you were able to get something out of my explanation on the printing history of The Chronicles of Narnia. I know you won't believe it, but I'm something of a Narnia fanatic. LOL. If I had to point to any one book and say that's what started me on my sf/fantasy love affair, it would be The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Fifth grade and my favorite teacher in the world started reading this book to the class. I was in awe. At that age, I honestly didn't care about the deeper religious implications of the writing. I just couldn't wait until the next trip to the magical world of Narnia where magic worked, mythical beasts lived and animals talked. When he finished reading the entire book, I had to hunt up the rest of the series at the library. I checked them out of the library so many times, my Mom finally gave in and bought me the boxed set pictured above. A year or so later, the best Easter gift of the year was Companion to Narnia A Complete Illustrated Guide to Themes, Characters, and Events of C.S. Lewis's Imaginary World by Paul F. Ford . I've obviously moved on to more advanced reading, but I still remember those magical classroom moments listening as the Pevensie's story unfolded and there will always be a special place in my heart for these books.
