You know how you are really enjoying the plot of the book and you are wondering how everything is going to go down at the end and you just know it will be good? And then the main character is knocked out and has to be told what happened? Yeah. That pisses me off.

a little weird with starting off with killing one of the good guys. I almost didn't want to go further, but eventually did. The story resolved this dilemia but I thought the previous books were just a little more fun.

When I originally picked up this book I had no idea it was part of a series. I loved the cover. The bright colors and the varieties of shiny textures all over just made me want to touch it. Besides, in this one the vampire lead is the woman. Awesome! The story itself did not disappoint either. The story takes place in a world very much like our own, only paranormals are becoming increasingly open and part of the society. (Hmmm, sounds like several other books) But this one is a bit different. In Broken Heart, Oklahoma the paranormal population is finding a safe haven...mostly.
What I liked:
1. The cover, but I've already talked about that.
2. Broken Heart, Oklahoma - The setting just makes this book for me. See unlike a lot of books where the authors have built worlds where paranormals are easily accepted, this world is just getting their first real tastes of it. While vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, and the likely are widely spread they are still looking for safe havens. Broken Heart is just that. The variety of stores and businesses are owned by local residents who just happen to be paranormals themselves and are trying to make a welcoming place for others. It is down home Southern comfort.
3. Michelle Bardsley lets a quirky sense of humor come out through the characters. Even in the midst of a life or death battle there is something funny. This works for me. It's hard to describe, but the one liners and the personal snark that some of the characters share make this a fun read.
What I didn't like:
1. Not much really.
2. I wish I had known this was part of a series; I would have liked to start from the beginning to see if some of the world building things are explained better if I'm with them from the start. Just as an FYI, although I'm labeling this as a series, it seems to be a collection of stand alone stories that are all occuring in the same world / place / Broken Heart. From looking at the author's web page it appears that the world building and some of the characters over lap, but each book focuses on a different towns person. Which could make this end up being a positive.
Overall, I can't wait to get my hands on more of this series. I really enjoyed reading Ms. Bardsley's novel.

"Over My Dead Body" is book five from Michele Bardsley's hilarious 'Broken Heart Vampires' contemporary series about a small city in Oklahoma that becomes a protected haven for 'good guy' vampires. In the first book, several citizens are bitten by accident and those are the ones allowed to stay...the others are paid and 'enchanted' to leave to live successful lives elsewhere. So basically, we have here an entire city of otherworldly creatures...but many of them were just plain, ordinary people and the titles of Bardsley's books reinforce that: "I'm the Vampire, That's Why"; "Don't Talk Back to Your Vampire"; "Because Your Vampire Said So"; and "Wait Till Your Vampire Gets Home". Funny? Oh yeah. Good reading? Definitely.
Simone moves to Broken Heart with her daughter for sanctuary. Since the night Simone's abusive husband tried to kill her, her daughter hasn't spoken and Broken Heart just SOUNDS like a good place to be. Until even stranger things happen...like becoming a vampire, falling in love with a ?human?, developing weird powers, oh and let's not forget another attack by her now undead hubby.
You could read "Over My Dead Body" without reading the previous books...but to get the full enjoyment, I'd still recommend looking up the backlist. This series does a wonderful job of combining humor, action, magic (we're not just talking about vampires!), romance, and a continuing storyline that moves along with each book without leaving the reader hanging. Not an easy task, but Michele Bardsley manages with zippy dialogue, steamy love scenes, and just the right amount of written slapstick. If you enjoy laughter, magic, and mommyhood with challenges...check out this series.

On the fifth installment of Broken Heart Vampire we get to know the story of one of those 11 single-mom that turned into vamp; Simone and hot-human Brady whom i have the pleasure of knowing on Book 4.
This has more serious tone and tear-jerker moments than the previous books placed together. It wasn't as funny as the others but given the history or our heroine and the plot, it was understandable. I found myself wiping tears from my eyes on some part of the book or grinning broadly; my heart swellin inside my chest.
However, it did not render my interest. Infact, the first chapter spiked my interest so bad i was ITCHING to find out what happened. More then once i was threatened to skim through the pages but thankfully my common sense was still working and i devoured every scene until i knew what the hell was going on.
From the previous book, this held more drama. Our heroine made a choice years ago that affected her life. It was a great choice, i admit, but the past caught up with her and everything went bersek.
Our heroine was a reat lead. She was mature and didn't irritate me. I was with her all the way.
Im off to book 6! :)

What I Loved: The furthering of the story of the community of Broken Heart OK. I am really loving how the elements are coming together and the community is really bonding together. The "wish" was probably my favorite moment in the book because it really was funny but I think great for the town.
What I Liked: Simone and Braddock had a really sweet story. I think they both felt a little bit like they didn't belong but it was fun to watch how they ended up belonging like everyone else.
Complaints: None really! This wasn't my favorite book in the series but it was still a really fun read.
Why I gave it a 3: This book was a great continuation of the story of Broken Heart but it just wasn't my favorite. That being said, do not skip it--Simone and Braddock are a really good couple and you will miss some "plot" forwards. Well worth the time it took to read!
Who I would recommend it too: PNR readers who have read the rest of the series. It really is one of those fun series that just make you smile!

I just cant get into this series anymore. I did like them at first although they never hit my favorite. They seem to have the same pattern, I’m getting so board with it. I don’t care for the science fiction mix has been added in the last few books, so I just cutting them out now.

August 8, 2011Started reading this but couldn't finish it. I couldn't get into it so figured I would at least give it a couple chapters and see if it got any better. Well, after chapter 3 I just couldn't do it anymore. I enjoy the whole werewolf/ vampire thing, but this is just really out there.

This was a good addition to the series. Just when you think the paranormal stuff adds enough cra cra some military/bio engineering is added to the mix.
I liked Brady when he was first introduced, I had hoped he was getting his own story soon. I liked all the intrigue in this story. I mean with Simone's husband, their real name, the secrets she was holding, and well it was par for the course for the series.
I enjoyed it lots and lots.
One of the things I particularly like about her vampires is how they've their own powers. I mean the fae kind, water, spirits, metal working, fire, and well you know. The idea of that is not exactly new, but it was introduced in a cool way and it didn't seem to be just a re-working of someone else's work.

Over My Dead Body is the fifth book in the Broken Heart series. Ahhhhh this book was just so good. I just couldn’t get enough of these amazing characters. You would think that there couldn’t possibly be anymore story to tell with this amazing series, but the author just keeps proving me wrong. This story was just so well written and I just fell into the story. I just loved getting to go along with Brady and Simone and see how they deal with their new situations. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this series.

Truthfully, I don't remember how I got this book. I believe it was at a garage sale at a church outing. But, I do know that I loved it and it had me on suspense. This is the only book that I read by the author, but I remember over all loving this book. I still have it on my bookshelf, the paperback cover all messed up and the pages bent. I've been meaning to reread it but now that I see there might be more to this store, maybe I should start with the first one!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well.
Simone, her daughter, Glory, and Gran sound like such a neat family that have made light of their circumstances and have a routine.
The chemistry between Simone and Brady is undeniable even though she is trying to fight it.
It was neat to see how the author tied in both Simone and Brady's past and made them work together to figure the situation out.

So far I think my favorite of the series. I feel like the action was less expected. And the romance was a lot better because I felt like the relationship actually built up. It wasn't just some random guy all of a sudden being her mate.

In the fifth book of her Broken Heart vampire series, Michele Bardsley ups the ante by adding a much darker element to this book. While humor is still a major aspect, there is more menace in this tale. Over My Dead Body begins with a bang and keeps the action going until the last page. And keeps the reader guessing–like me– when I read the first paragraph:
“Killing Braddock Hayes changed my life—such as it was—forever. Committing murder should change a person, at least a person who still has a conscience, and I sure as hell had mine.”
Whoa! Even if I weren’t already a fan of this series, I would be sucked into this story with that line. The vampire heroine killing her love interest in the first chapter spells trouble and we readers are jonesing for some answers. Simone Sweet, newly turned vampire and resident mechanic of Broken Heart, Oklahoma is no stranger to trouble. After being abused and nearly murdered by her ex-husband, she escapes to Broken Heart with her young daughter, Glory, who has not spoken a word since that fateful night. Seeking a safe haven, Simone never counted on becoming one of the undead. Broken Heart has since become a sanctuary of sorts for the paranormal community, and Simone has settled into a normal—or normal if you’re paranormal—life.
Braddock “Brady” Hayes is a former PRIS (Paranormal Research and Investigation Services) operative who is in Broken Heart to help install a security perimeter around town, an Invisi-shield, which when fully operational would make Broken Heart “disappear” and thereby protect all who live there from those who would rather rid the world of paranormal beings. Brady is always willing to consult with local mechanic, Simone, about the Invisishield, but he’s more interested in getting up close and very personal with her. He’s a tall, dark, handsome and oh so buff former military man, who is ogled by every woman in town, but he only has eyes for Simone. He definitely makes her undead heart beat faster, but she’s overly cautious about becoming involved, for many reasons: her last relationship was a disaster, to say the least; and becoming intimate with Brady—a human—is not a good idea, since they would be bound together for 100 years; and Brady is way too perceptive and Simone doesn’t want him learning the truth about her past. But Simone’s past is about to catch up to her in a big and very bad way!
When someone starts murdering vampires, the citizens of Broken Heart must band together to find the culprit. Simone seems to be connected to murders. Or is she simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. If she is to save herself and ultimately Broken Heart, she must trust Brady and tell him about her life before she came to Broken Heart. She may be surprised how closely Brady’s own past is linked with hers and the evil that is determined to destroy them all.
Michele Bardsley has done it again! This is one of my favorite paranormal series for sheer entertainment value. The heroine may act the part of friendly and open neighbor but her secret past makes it hard for her to bond deeply with many people. She can fake it with the best of them and put on a smile but inside, she's kept her distance. Life in Broken Heart for the heroine is peaceful-relatively. She worries about her secret coming to light. She worries that her daughters silence and the fear that she'll never hear the sweet voice again. There is one person who she calls a friend and now, much to her surprise, he's initiating the upgrade from friendship to relationship.
She never imagined the hero; this big and strong and quiet man could ever want her. Sure, he has a very special bond with her daughter but the heroine isn't used to having to depend on anyone but herself and now she has a man around the house again. She can't help but compare the hero to her abusive and very dead ex-husband because in her heart she knows the hero is a good man who is good for her. They play the dating game- as much as a vampire and a human can, but it’s clear the hero is not playing. He knows what he wants and isn't afraid to let her know. But turns out, he's not entirely human as she finds out when she takes a wee bit of him and ends up in the hospital.
The hero is a rouge secret agent whose organization targets paranormal creatures. Now there are deaths around the 'safe' town and the heroine can feel the dread of having herself as a target again. Then her daughter goes missing and all hell breaks loose. Her ex-husband turns up, alive- well, relatively, and this organization is holding her daughter hostage to get the heroine to play ball and kill the hero. Now, she knows that she can't survive this on her own and once where she was secretive and reclusive, she opens herself up to the friends and the love that have surrounded her all along.
From the look of this cover you'd expect this book to be a light and humorous rom-com but while it had it's funny parts, there was true anguish and a lot of heart. I was pleasantly surprised by this and I loved that the author was able to capture true emotion to go along with the comedy. There were parts that really made my heart break, like when the heroine believes her daughter is dead or when the hero feared his tainted blood had killed the woman he loves. I was enjoying the story and the all the characters and how they interacted with each other. However, the thing that could have really pushed it over the hill to 5-star territory, would be if it had been longer. 250 pages is a bit too short when you have these rich characters to work with and develop. That extra 50 pages could have been spent more on the hero's past and present because while it's written in first person from the heroine's POV, the hero was still a little lost in the plot. I will say that this book sparks high hopes for the rest of the series and for this author in general. Just because of its cartoon jacket, don't be fooled. There's potential for true story telling in there.

I really do like this series. It does have its issues especially with plot holes. I also thought at the end that when she passed out we dont know what happened and neither does she. Its explained by the other characters. Why would it be done that way? Thats just weird. I mean on some level in books the main character kinda has the gist but the ending of this was just odd. Also, this started out pretty smoothly but then slowed down and the pace sped up again. A little up and down there.
I liked Simone but sometimes she grated on me on how much she flipped out over the small stuff. She's got a horrid history with her husband who's supposedly dead at her hand. She's got a traumatized little girl...Glory which I wish there was more interaction with her. I dont know if its because she wasnt willing to speak or what. That shouldnt negate her role in the book. Her big lesson in this book is your past can come back and bite you in the ass!
Brady is from book 4 and I dunno if its just me...he seemed more intimidating in book 4 than this one. He seemed like a teddy bear in this one. Not that its necessarily a bad thing but noticeable. He's sweet and has had a bit of a thing for Simone the moment he met her. He plays Candy Land with Glory and is often there when he's needed. So...a total white knight. Of course I wanted to bash his head in when Simone is taken and dumped back off and he treats her like a damn criminal. Yeesh really? He was supposed to have her back and trust her like she trusted him and is an ass to her at that point. Thats before he knew she was taken by the psycho group he used to belong to. So...yeah that so didnt justify that and I am wondering why she let him off the hook for it. Like I said plot holes are a big issue with this book and probably some of the others in this series.
I dont know if this series got big too fast for the author and she didnt consider how the plot or books didnt make sense in some parts? I dont know but hopefully the next is better. I'm about halfway through the series and the amount we're all spending on these books I think they should be done better. Or decrease the price on some of the older ones. 7-8 dollars per book that have constant issues is hard to swallow, but we continue to purchase them because we like them enough or we want to know what happens to the characters. I do think I'll be taking a break and not order the next one just yet.
I liked Simone but sometimes she grated on me on how much she flipped out over the small stuff. She's got a horrid history with her husband who's supposedly dead at her hand. She's got a traumatized little girl...Glory which I wish there was more interaction with her. I dont know if its because she wasnt willing to speak or what. That shouldnt negate her role in the book. Her big lesson in this book is your past can come back and bite you in the ass!

Simone Sweet, newly turned vampire and resident mechanic of Broken Heart, Oklahoma is no stranger to trouble. After being abused and nearly murdered by her ex-husband, she escapes to Broken Heart with her young daughter, Glory, who has not spoken a word since that fateful night. Seeking a safe haven, Simone never counted on becoming one of the undead. Broken Heart has since become a sanctuary of sorts for the paranormal community, and Simone has settled into a normal life.
Braddock “Brady” Hayes is a former PRIS (Paranormal Research and Investigation Services) operative who is in Broken Heart to help install a security perimeter around town, an Invisi-shield, which when fully operational would make Broken Heart “disappear” and thereby protect all who live there from those who would rather rid the world of paranormal beings. Brady is always willing to consult with local mechanic, Simone, about the Invisishield, but he’s more interested in getting up close and very personal with her.
He’s a tall, dark, handsome and oh so buff former military man, who is ogled by every woman in town, but he only has eyes for Simone. He definitely makes her undead heart beat faster, but she’s overly cautious about becoming involved, for many reasons: her last relationship was a disaster, to say the least; and becoming intimate with Brady—a human—is not a good idea, since they would be bound together for 100 years; and Brady is way too perceptive and Simone doesn’t want him learning the truth about her past. But Simone’s past is about to catch up to her in a big and very bad way!
When someone starts murdering vampires, the citizens of Broken Heart must band together to find the culprit. Simone seems to be connected to murders. Or is she simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. If she is to save herself and ultimately Broken Heart, she must trust Brady and tell him about her life before she came to Broken Heart. Back in Broken Heart, Oklahoma, recent turn-blood Simone Sweet is hiding out from her past, and just wants a normal life for her and her daughter Glory, who hasn’t talked since witnessing her Mother kill her Father in self-defense. Braddock Hayes is a former ETAC operative who is also running from his past in which he did some terrible things. Now he has dedicated his life to helping out the paranormal kind and finds himself enamored of Simone and her family, despite the fact that he is a human, and Simone is a vampire.
I really love this Broken Heart series and it seems the more ridiculous and ludicrous things seem to get in this tiny paranormal town, the more I love it. And I think this is the only series I can say that for. The characters and plots sure know how to keep the reader guessing and totally anxious to know what will happen next in good old Broken Heart.
I really liked Simone because she survived and persevered through a horrible and violent situation. I appreciate the fact that though these are meant to be light and fun reads, the author is not afraid to touch on the heavy subjects like abuse and domestic violence. Through Simone, Bardsley gives the reader’s a courageous and steadfast mother with a will to do anything to ensure the safety and happiness of her child.
Braddock, aka Brady, was a girl’s dream. He was very sweet in all of his tough guy glory, but still quite flawed. He’s not proud of some of the things he’s done in his past, so has committed himself to Broken Heart and its occupants to try and make up for it. Brady is so loving towards Simone and so kind and gentle with her daughter and grandmother.
Simone’s and Brady’s past come back to haunt them with a vengeance, making for a fascinating story. Add in some colorful new characters like the pixie Flet, 70 year old Vamp George (who wants to start a nudist colony for older vamps), and Lycan Renier, toss in the old faithfuls like Lycan triplets Damien, Darrius, and Drake, and you’ve got yourself a great, fast-paced story, with plenty of action and a dash of mystery.
Overall I love this series and I look forward to the next wacky and fun filled adventure in Broken Heart.

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of Michele Bardsley. I love the Broken Heart series, mostly because it has that little something extra that I find lacking in many paranormal romances. Now, the handsome, charming, Braddock Hayes, is described as what I would personally consider my "perfect man", however, I happened upon something that had snagged my attention. On several pages, Braddock is described as having "brown eyes", then later on, "blue eyes". There is a slight alternation in which he is described as having dark, brown eyes, but by my count, there were two instances in which he was described as having blue eyes. This tiny detail that many may have been easily overlooked is something that will always boggle my mind. When developing a character, it can and should be expected that the author themselves will have a clear picture of their character. Something that many authors lack is the ability to describe the characters in their story, although some may say that it enables the reader to picture the character however they please. In my personal opinion, I prefer the author to describe everything from height to hair color. I also felt that Simone's appearance could have had more description. Overall, I did enjoy the book, but then again, I've enjoyed each book in the series thus far.

This is a rather silly paranormal romance/contemporary urban fantasy series, but I still enjoy it. The author seems to thing more is better, so she throws everything she can imagine into her story lines. This means that she spends a lot of time bringing you up to speed on the convoluted plotlines in previous books, and doesn't leave a whole lot of room for real character development. I find it entertaining, though. I like that she surprises me every time with a new magical creature or techno gadget or power. I also like the down-home tone of the Oklahoma-bred perspective of her heroines.
So this one is the story of the town's female, recently turned vamp, mechanic - Simone Sweet, and the former paratrooper techno-wiz Bradley. Simone's got a big bad secret (she shot her abusive ex husband and then ran with her 2 year old daughter), and lots of intimacy issues. Bradley's history is a hundred times worse, but he's not kicking himself over it. Bad guys come to town and try to blackmail Simone into doing some heinous stuff, but the good guys eventually prevail. A few innocents and guilty guys die before it's all over.

I picked this up because I'd read a book by Cherie Priest about a sassy female vampire and this sounded like it might be similar. But it turned out the similarities are very superficial.
I didn't realize until after I'd finished the book that it is #5 in a series. Maybe that explains why some of the relationships in the book didn't make sense to me. Maybe it even explained Brady's attraction to Simone because I sure couldn't figure it out in this book. It made even less sense to me than Edward's attraction to Bella in Twilight. I did enjoy some of the repartee and snarky comments though it caused me to have trouble believing Simone's assertion that she had "perfected the art of hiding behind bright smiles and perky attitudes."
I also had wasn't quite willing to buy into a world in which any type of human, paranormal being, or apparently even dragons, can mate with any other type and produce offspring. Or an author and editor who use "peaked" when they mean "piqued". But I know those wouldn't bother everyone.
So, for me it was OK for a quick light read, but didn't draw me in enough to make me want to seek out other books in the series.

I thought the story was very good, and I believe that's how a person would react to being in an abusive situation and getting out of it. I think she was justified in her killing the man who was a danger to herself and her daughter, so I feel like she shouldn't have that amount of guilt, but that's speaking intelectually. Emotionally, I realize that's probably the right response someone would have to that trauma. I don't know; I've never been in that situation. I've never killed someone, so that's just speculation on my part. I really liked how Simone's questioning of God was not resolved. I totally thought that's where the book was headed on that score. I was surprised when, at the end, she still was unsure about him. I give kudos to Michele Bardsley for taking that tack and deciding not to go all preachy on the reader.
A lot of the problems in the last one weren't in this one. The relationship between Brady and Simone seemed genuine. The humor was there. The narator wasn't annoying and preachy.

Over my Dead Body by Michele Bardsley, Broken Heart Vampire book five.
The main character's in this book are Glory and Simone. When Glory and Simone moved to Broken Heart, Oklahoma it seemed the perfect place to be. Glory's ex-husband had gone after trying to murder her daughter Simone, it was where the now mute Glory felt safe. Glory had been mute since her ex-husband attempted murdering Simone.Simone is hiding some secrets, big secrets. Simone has developed feelings for Braddock Hayes, he turns her legs to jelly just by looking at her. Braddock is helping to build an Invi-Shield around Broken Heart to protect it and all who live there. Braddock is also helping Glory speak again. Simone's past rears its ugly head again....Will it spoil things with Braddock?
Firstly I am not into girly slushy romances but these books combine a touch of that with layers of wit and humour. You pick up the book and before you know it you have finished it.
