Readers become writers, and Christina has always been a reader. Ultimately she discovered she liked to read romance best because the relationship between a man and a woman is always humorous. A woman wants world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants a Craftsman router, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will make his bald spot disappear. When Christina’s first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be? Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before she was published. Now her suspense, paranormal, historical, and mystery novels have been translated into 30 languages and sold more than 15 million copies in print. Praised for her “brilliantly etched characters, polished writing, and unexpected flashes of sharp humor that are pure Dodd” (Booklist), her award-winning books have landed on numerous Best of the Year lists and, much to her mother's delight, Dodd was once a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. She lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest, where her 700 lavender plants share the yard with her husband’s various “Big Projects,” including a treehouse, zipline, and their very own Stonehenge. Enter Christina’s worlds and join her mailing list for humor, book news and entertainment (yes, she’s the proud author with the infamous three-armed cover) at christinadodd.com. The Varinski family had no rules. No rules at all. They could do what they wanted—rape, pillage, torture, murder—and no one could stop them……assassinate their enemies, to destroy whatever it suited them to destroy. Usually, they performed their assassinations and sabotage only for their paying clients.
But as for the s, the whole Varinski clan They hunted the Wilders for vengeance, they will stop at nothing to get their pound of flesh . Tasya Hunnicutt, the savviest world traveler who you could ever meet, imagined that she could take on the longest-lived, most deadly cartel in the world, and win. The Varinskis made the Mafia look like altar boys, and why? Cuz old Konstantine had made a deal with the devil, and the devil knew his stuff.
She is a photographer and writer, who wants to find the Madonna to provide irrefutable proof on the Varinskis, the family that killed her parents.
She’d worked with him, fought with him, traveled with him, slept with him—and she did not know Rurik Wilder at all. .
Unfortunately for her, Rurik Wilder is looking for that same Madonna for Completely different reasons…Rurik determined to break the curse on his family and save his father's soul. He knows that he's close to finding that missing piece of the holy icon that can accomplish all that….. Did I mention the fact that he is an archeologist, and All clues point to a cave, an ancient warrior's grave, on a small Scottish island, but Rurik isn't the only one adamant on finding it……… the Varinski family is also on the hunt for that same piece ……. Rurik and his family were involved in a fight to the death—and beyond, He was just hoping that he didn’t take her down with his search
At times I felt like I was reading the manuscript for raiders of the lost ark…… this was very fast pace read
I just loved Zorana and Konstantine to death , now I thought Jasha was just down right Hilarious in this Installment….. I can’t lie like curiosity for both firebird and their other brother story has My interest……. I also enjoyed read on occasion Boris’s plans
I found this to be a fast-paced story with a rather good unique twist on paranormal romance…………. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Lil ancient, Lil dark evil twist to their paranormal reads……… Happy Reading, and I’ll see you on the other side ……. And thank you very much my dear friend for lending me your books
The Darkness Chosen series is...*rubs eyes* ...well, some have called it sweet torture; I on the other hand suffered my way through this book.
I promised myself that I would not reread a book in 2012; so here I am .. reading new books ... new authors ... And paying the price.
Don't get me wrong, Christine Dodd has an imagination that she proves easily in this series that is filled with a historical background of selling one's soul to the devil, a history of rape and dominance ... A back story of a family that ran away from it all and have survived hiding as well as preparing for the inevitable battle between ... *drum roll* ... Good and evil.
Rurik is a fun character, shapeshifting hawk! Different and cool, eh? He is filled with conviction, passion and sexy yumminess to the tenth power baby! A charmer, he seduced the one and only Tasya into his bed and apparently under his hot and multiple-orgasmic throbbing skills. Where does that leave Tasya? Consumed with the fear of being overwhelmed and taken over.
"I can't predict the future, but I know this has just begun."
There are several lines in this book that are more than worthy of a cheesy James Bond moment with a bit more romance that just makes you want to barf. The lines will surely make a lot of women whimper in the unfilled romance in their own lives...Me? Cheesy!
"You and I were reborn from Mother Earth, clawing our way out of the birth canal and into precarious life."
Finally, the eluding Tasya Hunnisomethingorother pops back into Rurik's life and he is angry and ready to remind her of the lust and desire that she felt with him. Fortunate for the back story of this book, she has this dark past filled with secret convictions of her own. She's running towards the deadly historical force, the same force Rurik hides from...This leaves the interesting couple of a clash of motivation.
Still running from Rurik, running from the assassin psycho raping baddudes, running from ...hell every thing, they are forced to endure one another's company; the perfect chance for Rurik to remind her of who she is dealing with.
"Because I want every breath you take to be empty unless you're close enough to smell me. Every word you speak to be unimportant unless it's to me. Every sound you hear empty unless it's my voice. I want you to remember that whatever pleasure you have from now on, you'll have it from me."
Bit much, isn't it? Damned sexy though!
I recommend this book to...mature adults only. The violence is fun and descriptive, although brief. The sexual content is entirely too sporadic for my taste, yet there is mild content found between the pages ...somewhere.
I do not recommend this book to immature eyes. ~happy reading!
Christina Dodd has not accomplished very much with her effort in "Touch of Darkness". Yes Paranormal Romance books are very popular, but that does not mean you should just write one because you write regular Romance. In "Touch of Darkness" it become very obvious of the author the Dodd is trying to copy and she does a very poor job. I wouldn't recommended this book if you are looking for a good Paranormal Romance book to get lost in during the Holidays. There are so many more authors of there who write this genre that are so much better.
I will give Christina Dodd this much, she sure does have a penchant for writing "consensual" rape scenes.
I gave this second book in the Darkness Chosen series a shot despite reservations after having read the first book, which also contained such sex scenes. Apparently I need to listen to myself more closely.
There are ways to write scenes of sexual domination that don't rely on the woman saying no, not once, not twice but three times before she ultimately "succumbs" to the man because he's right and oh so wonderful at arousing her so that she can't refuse him.
I don't care how well matched a couple may be, that they may be soul mates or how masterful the man may be at sexual technique, if a woman says no that means NO.
What irritates me the most is the fact that this series has great promise. It's got a good storyline and some pretty good plots. There is no reason to have the sex scenes written the way they are other than to fulfill some sort of fantasy on the part of the writer. Give the female lead a backbone and the ability to not be ruled by her body, but by her head instead. Strong women are far more interesting to read about, and up until the sex scene Tasya was just that, interesting.
As you can see I gave this book a rating of one, but only because they don't have 1/2 stars here on Goodreads. I stopped reading it as soon as I got to the sex scene. For me to stop reading a book it has to be either so awful I can't finish or so annoying that I refuse to continue. In this case it was annoying.
I would suggest that if Ms. Dodd wishes to write such fiction that she consider writing a book of erotica regarding her apparent fantasies with sexual domination and rape, wherein the reader then knows what to expect.
There were some things I liked about this book but much more that I didn't. I know that many have told me that this book and the first were very similar, but for me they had almost nothing in common.
I didn't like it that the story began when they had already met, because we lost all the details about how they met. And it wasn't like with the first book where we knew they knew each other for a long time. In this one they met but we have very little info about the the event. Also I didn't like it that she kept denying what she was feeling for him and that every time they were together it seemed forced, like she would prefer a 100 things than to be with him. She kept being a fool the whole book, only the last couple of chapters she realized she did love him and turns into this submissive, docile and obedient woman. I really hates Tasya. If it wasn't for Rurik I would have given this book even a lower rating.
But what I hated the most of this book was that the terrifying and frightening image you had from the Varinski's from book 1 was transformed 100 degrees. They used to be professional Assassins who were feared by everybody and had so much power that no one dared to stop them. But in this book they turn into this lazy, bad trained and weak men. I believe that every book needs a well developed villain to be entertaining and that was missing in this story. Also the ending was bad for me.Don't wanna spoil it to anybody so I wont say any more.
I still have faith in this series. I will definitely be reading the next book. I hope it's better than this one.
i have never read a short story with so much work put in, the story is well developed and the characters are just amazing, the plot is beautiful, we are talking magical beauty here. I love this series so much, I finished it all in on week and I cant wait to read more book by this author. I fell in love with the charcters so much that it was sad to see the end of the series.
Rurik Wilder is determined to break the curse on his family and save his father's soul. He knows he's close to finding the missing piece of the holy icon that can accomplish all that. All clues point to a cave, an ancient warrior's grave, on a small Scottish island, but Rurik isn't the only one adamant on finding that icon.
Photographer and writer Tasya Hunnicutt wants to find the icon to provide irrefutable proof on the Varinskis, the family that killed her parents. Unfortunately for her, Rurik, her lover, is also a Varinski.
The two embark on a perilous journey across Europe in hopes of locating the icon, dodging the Varinski assassins along the way. They're a little too resilient, but Tasya refuses to believe the rumors of the family's supernatural abilities, until Rurik is forced to give her a demonstration in order to save her life.
Now Tasya is forced to make a life-altering decision. Is it possible for a man of Varinski descent to feel any kind of tender emotion? And can she really trust him enough to place her life and heart in his hands?
Yet another winner—and an improvement from the first installment in this wonderful series.
Rurik is an easier character to relate to, compared to his brother Jasha. Rurik is scarred from a past accident when he was still an Air Force pilot. It was that accident that spurred him into denouncing somewhat his ability to change into a predator. He's also gentler than Jasha was in Scent of Darkness, yes, still using sex to bend his woman to his will, yet doing it with more "style and class". Rurik is also a lot quicker to admit his feelings, which is another plus.
Tasya...What to say about Tasya. Two immature, emotionally-inept, bitchy heroines in a row is almost too much to take, but at least Tasya came around a little quicker than her predecessor Ann. Which has mostly had to do with Rurik's behavior toward her. Still, I found all that secret-keeping a little tedious, when everybody with half a brain could figure the part of the story about her origins just by examining her name. Duh!
Ms. Dodd heightened the action and peril another notch in this one and expanded on the main story-arc, dealing another tidbit about the possible unraveling of the pact with the Evil One. The conflict between Tasya and Rurik was a beauty of behold. From the beginning they never were on the same page and as soon as a truth was told, another secret sprouted out, and the two constantly skirted on the edge of betrayal.
There was also another great cliffy at the end, unfortunately I have the entire series, so it didn't create the desired effect, but still...Oh, boy. It made me itch to pick the next book immediately. As the series progresses the stories get more and more engaging and complex, so this series is definitely highly recommended by this satisfied reader.
Still binging and packing and grooving my way through this series. The brothers are supposed to find the relics and one is found and now Rurik is on the hunt for another. He thinks he may find it and Tasya, his love, is the one to find it. She has her own gifts. So good with so many twists.
Good story but the random flipping back and forth between multiple charters is very confusing, especially with no indication of a change. Going from the female lead, to the male lead, to the bad guy, to the male lead again throws you off. There are also quite a few typing errors throughout the book. Otherwise a really good book.
Touch of Darkness wasn't the most fantastic book I've ever read, but it definitely didn't need a Viking funeral in the kiddie pool, which is always a good thing.
The situations is much the same for the Wilder family when we pick up their story. Rurik, after finding out his archaeological dig in Scotland is all over the news, which can alert his murderous relatives, the Varinksis, to the plan to recover the stolen icons of the Madonna and free their father Konstantine from the pact with the devil (wow that was a mouthful,) tears ass to Scotland to get the situation under control. When he arrives, he finds a former one night stand, Tasya Hunnicutt, there as a representative from the people funding the digg. He immediately begins to plan on how to pay Tasya back (read: sleep with her again) after she absconded like a thief in the night after their night together.
Needless to say, things rapidly take a turn for the crappy after Rurik and Tasya open the tomb that's the focus of the dig, and they have to run for it once it becomes clear that the Varinskis are waaaaay to close for comfort. They take off over hill and dale, end up at a convent that's a serious blast from Tasya's past, and find out that they've each been lying like crazy to the other pretty much from the first moment they met. They both have the good sense to not be crazy upset about it, though, which was nice. There's a really great fight scene at the end of the book and a cliffhanger that's pretty enjoyable and, of course, a happily ever after.
I have to say I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the first in the series, and it definitely doesn't stand on its own within the series, so if you're interested in reading, make sure you start with Touch of Darkness. The interactions between the Wilder family members and the growing ranks of in-laws are funny and touching at the same time, and the relationship between Rurik and Tasya blossoms near the end and makes the clunkier parts in the middle worth skipping over. There were a few other story lines threaded through the book (why Rurik won't fly airplanes anymore and Tasya's mysterious heritage just to name a couple) that didn't really hold my interest, but skipping over them didn't detract from the story lines I do care about (the relationship between the lead characters, the search for the icons, the situation back at camp Wilder, etc.)
I have to give credit to Christina Dodd, she really redeemed herself as a great writer because I was a bit disappointed with her Fortune Hunters series. In her second work, she showed how versatile she could be with this hot second installment in the Darkness Chosen series. I liked this better than the first one, it had more adventure, suspense, action, humor, and the right amount of sex just the way I liked them.
The story started where the first left off, with Rurik rushing to a Scotland site where a tomb was dug. Tasya Hunnicutt, a reporter and photographer worked alongside him during the dig and eventually they had an affair, things got complicated after that. I liked how piece by piece we see the whole picture of things between them, Ms Dodd wrote early on Rurik's intense feelings for Tasya, and not just on a sexual level.
I immediately liked Tasya's character because I have a soft spot for writers and photographers. She's a strong and stubborn woman, her fears were warranted, having that kind of history and all. The story escalated to a shattering climax when everything came out in the open. The open chase was there, the denial, the lies, but everything boiled down to one great story with a cliffhanger.
There are similarities with the first novel, like the heroines being orphaned at a young age and fending for herself to be the women they are now, how they blame themselves for every trouble, not knowing that they're just caught up in the root of the trouble. I liked how the conflict was presented, how the sexual tension rose until finally the characters just gave in to the heat of the moment.
Now about the hero of the story, what can I say? He's really hot, especially about being a pilot. He didn't appeal to me at first because he's a hawk 'cause I'm more of a werewolf girl. His power was interesting though, changing a body part at will to any of a hawk's, that's original. What drew me to him was his air of authority, his dominating nature, and the times he gave in to Tasya's wishes. In the end, he implied that he'll let Tasya do as she wishes, and for a dominating man, that's something else. He respected her independence and lover her for it, there were a lot of touching moments between them. This is another story that showed how people value their lives after almost dying.
I never expected to like this series because it's her first venture in paranormal romance, and I'm glad I read this, it's highly entertaining.
Rurik and Tasya pull you into their story with strong voices and stubborn resolves. The tension is there from the start, and I liked that they had history, so their romance arc wasn't solely getting to know each other, but learning about each others' souls.
This book had me laughing aloud in public, close to tears, and holding my breath for about fifty pages! Suspension of disbelief had me living a tale about things I don't believe in, and did it oh so well.
There were a few moments where I felt Rurik took a little too much control over Tasya, and though she reflected later that she hadn't considered it too much, and in turn took control over Rurik in a much more equal way closer to the end, it still left me a little uncertain.
The story is incredibly well put together, Dodd's evident research paid off, and the paranormal elements were stunning. Touch of Darkness had me hooked from start to finish. I could hardly put it down! Will definitely be on the lookout for some other works from the same author. Definitely recommend.
I got this book on Audible for super cheap and I've had it in my library for a while. I didn't realize it was a book 2 to a series, which I either applaud the author on or curse myself for, because I usually research books (a little) before I buy.
The story line is good but the narrator was horrendous, hence the reason for the 3 stars. I also found some of the interactions between the 2 MC's a little strange at times.
If you decide you want to read this book do it the old fashioned way and not on audio. I think I probably would have liked it better with my own inflections.
Of all the books in this series I felt the least connect with these two lovers. While the historical information peeked my interested for a time. The main reason in which I like this series is the link of the family.
I'm not quite sure how this happened.. but I read this series pretty much backwards. I still enjoyed the books, but I was a little confused at times lol.
This is another series I got behind in reading, but thank goodness there’s only four books in the series. It won’t be that hard to catch up with it. With this second book down, I’m enjoying the series so far, and it should only get more interesting considering the hero of the next book hasn’t been heard from for years and the last hero — er, heroine — uh, well, since I haven’t looked ahead I’m not sure what’s going to happen! I’m looking forward to it, though.
Besides the interesting premise of this series, I like Ms. Dodd’s alpha heroes. Of course, they have strong heroines to go right along with them, but for me I have to have a dominant alpha in books like these. Rurik is definitely alpha, stemming from a long line of bad blood in his ancestry, which his family left behind, and the fact that he and his brothers are shapeshifters. Shifters are always one of my favorite reads, thus my love of alphas.
Fueled by the prophecy his mother gave the last time the family was all together, Rurik is in Scotland on an archeological dig searching for one of four holy icons needed to save his father’s life. His research has led him to this tomb, but he also finds Tasya roaming around the site. He hasn’t seen her since she left him after their night of amazing lovemaking. He’s determined to find out why now that she’s back poking around. When the tomb is finally opened, however, the icon is not there and they must flee with what little information the find inside when the evil side of his family blows the place to bits, killing people and making it look as though Rurik and Tasya were involved.
Wanting to be on her own, keeping her secrets to herself, Tasya finally gives in and sticks with Rurik on their icon scavenger hunt. She has her own reasons for wanting the relic and has no idea Rurik is also after it and why. He keeps that bit of information to himself when he discovers Tasya’s need for revenge against his left-behind relatives. On the run they face one challenge after another while stealing a moment here and there to sate the potent lust between them. It’s when Tasya sees Rurik fall from the sky that she leaves her plans in the dust and decides to finish Rurik’s journey to save his father.
The action in this book is pretty nonstop once Rurik and Tasya are forced to keep one step ahead of the villains on their tails. There’s also a side story of Rurik’s vow to himself to never fly again after a near-fatal mishap during his Air Force stint, including never flying as his hawk self. So far this series has kept my interest and I can’t wait to get to the last two books, Into the Shadow and Into the Flame.
This novel was just as good as the first one in this series, if not better than it. It had everything that I was looking for in a novel, and the fact that I also own it says a lot as well. I've read this novel two or three times now and I still love it. Even though I already know exactly what's going to happen, I still love rereading it. It just hooks me in every time and then it's hard for me to put it down. Which is exactly what I need from a novel from time to time.
Rurik has a fear that's been holding him back. He's got a fear of heights and of flying. A fear that is unreal for him since he can shift into a hawk. One of the birds of prey. But his fear stem from the fact that he got his co-pilot killed. A mission went wrong when his co-pilot saw his eyes glow. He ejected his seat and landed in enemy territory. Ultimately killing himself. Rurik has never forgiven himself and refuses to even try. So just stop thinking about it he does his other job as an archaeologist. In fact the site that he's currently working on is rumored to be the site of one of the Madonna pieces, an ancient relic that can help to free his family. And the site just became uncovered, so it's now swarming with the media. Tasya is just one of the many who happened to swarm the area. Although she was invited to be there. She even tries to help the idiot who thought it was a good idea to try and go in first. A man is killed when he didn't check for booby traps and the media was present. Now it's going to be even harder for Rurik to get the Madonna piece, especially with Tasya always around him. Tasya is a distraction that he can't afford right now. But he may not have a choice when his cousins start to hunt them.
This novel is an adult romance urban fantasy novel. One that's not even better than the first one, because they're both equal throughout the whole series. This novel is very intriguing and it probably has to do with the fact that it's jam-packed full of everything. Whether it's fighting, adventure, romance. There's always something going on in this novel. Making the plot of this novel even better. Which in turn just makes my recommendation a very good one. Because this is without a doubt a must-read novel. It has a lot going on for it and I'm sure that other readers will see this as well.
This is book two of the Darkness Chosen series. I wasn't impressed with the first book in the series but was need of a quick read and thought I'd give book two a try and I'm glad I did. Book two was soooooo much better than the first and really got attached to the characters.
This story is about another one of the brothers, Rurik Wilder. Rurik is an archaeologist working on a sight that could change his familys life because after much research he is sure one of the familys four icons is buried within the tomb. The only one that can ulter his plans is the woman he loves......Tasya Hunnucutt.
Tasya is a reporter/photographer with an agenda of her own. She is working on a book about the "legendary" varinski family and if she can just get the icon then she'll have the prof she needs, that will show the world exactly what the Varinskis are, and this will be very sweet justice for her because of her past. She has so much hatred for them, but little does she know that she slept with the enemy, a Varinski Wilder, Rurik Wilder.
When there is an explosion at the site and Rurik and Tasya barley escape they know that they are being chased by the Varinskis and they won't stop until they are dead. So now as they are gathering clues as to where the icon might be they have to be extra careful because if the icon were to get into the wrong hands, then it's game over.
When they reach the small town of Ruyshvania, the hear ghost stories about things of the past and clues that might be in an old church up the hill.
When they are alone Rurik convinces Tasya to run while he engages in battle with the Varinskis(his cousins) but not before some hot goodbyes "wink, wink". She is to bring the icon to his familys home and give it to his nother, she will know what to do but just as Taysa is running, she for she can't believe her eyes, one of the Varinskis changed into an eagle and following that eagle is a hawk and the hawk use to be Rurik!
Now that Taysa knows that the rumors are all true and has discovered what or who Rurik really is, she is at a crossroad, fame and fortune for herself or deliver the icon to his family and see what happens, for they are her enemy and now rurik is too.....isn't he?
This is the second book in the Darkness Chosen series featuring Rurik Wilder and Tasya Hunnicutt.
Rurik Wilder is an archaeologist on a dig in Scotland hoping to find the second part of the four Madonna Icons that will free the Varinski's and his family from the pact with the devil and stop his father from dying. Rurik also holds the power to transform himself into a fierce bird of prey, a Hawk. Rurik is madly in love with Tasya Hunnicutt, a woman sent from the people funding the dig. He got her into his bed one night and she’s being running from him ever since. But Tasya has a secret of her own, she’s determined to wreak revenge on the Varinski assassins who murdered her family. Assassins, it's been rumoured, who have powers no human should ever possess.
I enjoyed the first book Scent of Darkness and was expecting something similar with Touch of Darkness, sadly I was disappointed reading this one. I really thought there would be more to it, it is filled with more action and adventure but the chemistry between Rurik and Tasya is really off. Tasya is too busy running scared from Rurik and trying to taken down the Varinski assassins that are still free doing there evil business.
I really didn’t like Tasya as the heroine in Touch of Darkness as she’s too busy trying to do anything else than be with Rurik. She also spends a lot of the story denying her feelings for Rurik and going around and around. Never mind Rurik being frustrated, I wanted to kick Tasya’s ass! It’s only towards the end of the book and the sacrifices Rurik makes that she comes to her senses and realises she loves him!
Rurik is a great hero but he got on my nervous a bit too with his own secret fear of flying and his need to have Tasya. But overall he was a great hero trying to win Tasya’s love but lying to her and trying to save his family, mainly his father from the pact with the devil.
Also as a warning don’t read this as a stand alone book because it won’t flow well at all. It really fits as part of the series so read Scent of Darkness first!
I still have great expectations and great hope for the third and the fourth books of this series and I’ve heard good things about both books so I’m really looking forward to reading them.
