Zombie Raccoons & Killer Bunnies by Martin H. Greenberg
15.8. A Festivus for the Rest of Us!
December 23 is Festivus, and one of the “Festivus traditions” is the Airing of Grievances. Read a book with a word in the title which relates to one of your “pet peeves.”

One of my pet peeves is people with pets who assure me that the pet is a "real sweetheart" who "wouldn't hurt a fly". Well, seems to me these "pets" have teeth, are animals, and will attack under the right circumstances. My teenaged daugher was bitten by a young dog (aw, he's "just a puppy") the week before Christmas. (She's OK, the bite barely broke skin, but still.) Grrrr.

So I read a short story collection of cute little animals gone bad:

Zombie Raccoons & Killer Bunnies (2009) by Martin H. Greenberg (Paperback, 320 pages)

End of the Century by Chris Roberson

I read this book specifically so that I could watch the movie, a favorite of a good friend whose taste is veery similar to mine. I finished the book yesterday morning and watched the film last night and it was very enjoyable but I felt wanting more. So many characters and stories did not make it into the film. I loved every part with Kathy Bates best and could have watched 2 hours of her being Evelyn Couch with Jessica Tandy as Ninny!
So, in this case, I will agree Book Is Better Than The Movie!!!

Beth F | 669 comments 15.5 - never get involved in a land war in Asia...

Genghis: Birth of an Empire by Conn Iggulden

***592 pages = big book***

This book follows the life of Temujin, the young man who famously becomes Genghis Khan. The book is set in approximately 1100 AD in what becomes the Mongol Empire during Genghis Khan’s life (the Mongol Empire was MUCH bigger than current Mongolia, encompassing modern day China and parts of Europe and Russia). Temujin's raids and invasions had the result of uniting the nomadic tribes in northeast Asia and for eventually conquering most of Eurasia at the height of the Empire. Check out the interactive map here to see just how large and in charge it was: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_E...

Aside from Genghis Khan name recognition, I had very little knowledge about the history of this area and was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I’d won this in a first reads contest over a year ago and have been reluctant to read it because it looked like a “gory boy book” which isn’t something that normally interests me. Yet again, I am reminded that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover because I’ve actually gone and added the next book in this series to my ‘to read’ list as well. It was as engaging as it was gory.

----
20.5 - bigger is better and larger than life

The Exile: An Outlander Graphic Novel by Diana Gabaldon

Claire Fraser is definitely an unconventional woman as any fan of the Outlander series can attest. She was a war nurse in 1940 who was transported about 200 years back in time to the era of the Jacobite Rising in the Scottish Highlands. In the 1940’s she was a fairly typical modern woman but in the 1740’s she was an anomaly, a female who practiced medicine and acted as her husband’s equal.

This book is a graphic retelling of some of the events in the first book.

I love the actual Holiday, but dislike the excess time and work that goes into it. Right now is the ugliest part of it - the dreaded cleaning up after the event. Betty Crocker Whole Grains: Easy Everyday Recipes (2007) by Betty Crocker (Spiral-bound, 223 pages)
I love Betty Crocker Cookbooks! And - eating more whole grains is useful in "maintaining healthy body weight", plus it helps to prevent the onset of cancer. This new-to-me cookbook has alot of good, practical recipes for incorporating Whole Grains into your diet. I made "Chicken with Gingered Brown Rice" (p.125) for dinner tonight and it was a big hit! 5*s
