His stuff is pretty heavy....but I do have a habit of reading some really heavy subjects. I dont believe everything is a HEA, I'm attracted to the subject of life stuggles and how some characters react or deal w/ it...life does go on, even w/out the "Happily Ever After."

I'm pretty sure a new one just came out this week too.

I also like much, but not all, of Jane Austen's work; George Elliot; Enid Blyton; Chesterton; the Bronte sisters. Lots of classics.

That's a good question, I can see that Geraldine Brooks still has an Australian passport but she become a U.S citizen in 2002.
What is weird if you look at the books she wrote and the genre each book is puzzling;
Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague = British Literature
Caleb's Crossing = Indian Literature

It's interesting, isn't it? I mean, if someone's work is set in America/UK?India wherever, can they still be counted as an 'Aussie Author' because they remain Australian citizens? Or to 'qualify' as a writer of Australian fiction, does their fiction need to engage with Australian settings/themes/characters in some way?
I tend to think that in order to really be Australian, there needs to be some connection to Australia in the work itself, either setting, characters, or some lofty idea of an 'Australian theme'. What do others think?

Country of birth is my main criteria, but all the other points you've listed certainly add much to its credibility.

I tend to think British or Indian Literature is works that originate from these countries not set in these countries, but obviously people shelve them differently.
Personally I would consider her an Australian/US writer as she has citzenship in both, though I'm sure American would much prefer to claim her to themselves since they gave her a pulitzer

And to be perfectly Truth-ful (pardon the pun), I have too many fave authors to narrow it down.
