I haven't read the Highlanders. Darkfever was a free read from Amazon and happened to be book of the month in quite a few groups so I tried it.
Once I declared my dislike everyone encouraged me to read book 2 which I did today. It was better, a 3 star read. I would continue the series but the next two I've heard have huge cliffhangers so I'll try again closer to the release date of the last one, I think.

July 2010-Out of Bounds7/20, also read The Hunger Games 7/24,The Darkest Night 7/29
August 2010-You Slay Me 8/10, also read Skin Game 8/18
September 2010-Wolf Signs 9/4, also read Slave to Sensation 9/6, The Surgeon 9/7, Happy Hour at Casa Dracula 9/11

July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011
Completed: 3/12
Read 12 books, 1 per month, that are the first in a new to me series.
July Grimspace, Ann Aguirre, 7-7-10 Really liked this book. For some reason it reminded me of The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey. Most likely because of the mind merging that takes place at one point.
Also read: Stormwalker, Allyson James, 7-25-10 Good start to a new series. Fans of her dragon series will like this one too.
Killing Moon, Rebecca York, 7-29-10 Interesting take on an old legend. I wasn't fully invested in the characters for some reason. I was intrigued by the police detective secondary character so might read more if his story is featured.

August Black Dust Mambo, Adrian Phoenix, 8-8-10 I really liked this book, enough that I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
Also Read: Skin Game, Ava Gray, 8-17-10 The concept is interesting: Kayla can temporarily hijack anyone's best talent with a simple touch, the perfect ability for a con woman. No deep prose here, just a fun read (and lots of sex). After the first few pages, I really wasn't sure if I would even like the characters. But once I got further into the book, I was hooked. And while I was interested in how things would turn out for Kayla and Reyes, I actually found one of the secondary characters much more intriguing and I'm definitely going to read the second book in order to find out his story. Note: Ava Gray is a pen name for Ann Aguirre.
Destiny, Alex Archer, 8-21-10 I've got a few of the Rogue Angel books from when I was in Harlequin's Luna book club. This is the first time I've read any of them. Interesting enough that I'll eventually read some more, but they're not at the top of my TBR.
Covet, JR Ward, 8-23-10 Slow starter. Farther in, I became more interested in the story and it went quickly after that. Reminded me why I've taken a vacation from reading her BDB books.

September Shadow Bound, Erin Kellison, 9-6-10 I loved this book. I read the prologue at the store and didn't want to put it down. And though I never buy a second book from an unproven author without finishing the first one, in this case I also bought the second book strictly on the strength of that prologue. I was not disappointed. Kellison's mythology is interesting and I can't wait to dive into the second book to see what else is going to happen.
Also Read: Unholy Ghosts, Stacia Kane, 9-3-10 I actually started this in August, but I finished it this month. Enjoyed this one also. I've already added Unholy Magic to my list for my monthly bookstore visit.

And Ames--I was exactly the same way re: Darkfever. I wished Barrons would have killed Mac. I couldn't stand her in the 1st book. The only reason I continued on with the series was all the people here on GR who peer pressured me into it. And as you can see from my above comment, it's now one of my top 5 series. :)
I just read Rachel Vincent's Stray, which is another book I was warned about re: not liking the female lead, but I didn't have much of a problem with Faythe. Yes, I thought she was selfish in her obsession to have "independence", but I can also see her character's growth in just the first book.
I think what bugged me the most about Mac in Darkfever was her total Mary Sue-ness. I have come to realize that I am soooo not a fan of characters who are worthless. Who need a man to save them at every turn, and then they turn right around and get themselves in hot water again. Ugh. At least Faythe can save her own ass. That gets major points from me. :)

July/2010 Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon
August/2010 Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
September/2010 Beyond The Highland Mist

Faythe grows a hell of a lot in the Shifters series. She realises her actions have scary consequences not just for her but for those she cares about. I'd say try again. The 2nd book is better but the third is where things take off. Books 3 onwards all received 5 stars from me.

Lol! I totally agree. Mac was Too Stupid To Live. She deserved to die. And I couldn't believe she survived the fight in the warehouse with no training. Barrons is forever rescuing her ass. It must be tiring. I'm betting he was constantly re-evaluating her worth to him. ;)

How did you like Storm Born? I've been thinking about picking that up...

I know there are some mixed reviews out there for Storm Born but I really enjoyed it (I actually gave it 5 stars). Eugenie is a great heroine, the story is interesting and it has the right amount of humour. I'm going to pick up the second book soon.

Unholy Ghosts, Stacia Kane, 9-3-10 I actually started this in August, but I finished it this month. Enjoyed this one also. I've already added Unholy Magic to my list for my monthly bookstore visit.
The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins, 9-11-10 I was drawn in by the author and am definitely going to read the next book.
Shiver, Maggie Stiefvater, 9-16-10 I'd seen this on a few different people's reading lists, but never really looked into it. Then Yz's PNR Challenge was all about Exploring Goodreads and Shiver fit into a few different slots of the challenge. I'm glad I chose this book for one of the categories. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be checking out the next in the series.
Pride Mates, Jennifer Ashley, 9-18-10 First in the Shifter's Unbound Series. Interesting mythology. Shifter's are forced to be collared in order to retain the few rights they have. Higher paying jobs and certain forms of technology are denied them. The collar is supposed to keep their violent side in check. I would definitely read more in this series.
