Some of the firsts I have on my physical shelves that I could read:

Hi Steph,
I enjoyed it alot. I've started the second one and as with most series I find I've been able to fall into the 2nd story easier. Most times for me when I read the first book in a series I have a hard time just relaxing into the story I think that is because it is a new world. I do feel this is going to be a good series and have picked up all 5 books.

I'm sorry to take so long with a reply, but wanted to think about it carefully, especially now that there is another similar challenge up.
I'm afraid you can't "make-up" a missed month once you've started the challenge, but you can continue to meet the "mini-challenges" of each subsequent months along with everyone else!
Happy reading!

I will probably continue to read one 1st in series book each month since I am doing the "I Second That" challenge as well... If I am successful every other month, that is 11/12 a higher success rate than most of my challenges so far. Even though I can't officially "make-up" a missed month I will feel better personally if I read 2 firsts in a month so I have at least read 12 or more total.

July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011
Completed: 2/12
Read 12 books, 1 per month, that are the first in a new to me series.
July Grimspace, Ann Aguirre, 7-7-10 Really liked this book. For some reason it reminded me of The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey. Most likely because of the mind merging that takes place at one point.
Also read: Stormwalker, Allyson James, 7-25-10 Good start to a new series. Fans of her dragon series will like this one too.
Killing Moon, Rebecca York, 7-29-10 Interesting take on an old legend. I wasn't fully invested in the characters for some reason. I was intrigued by the police detective secondary character so might read more if his story is featured.
August Black Dust Mambo, Adrian Phoenix, 8-8-10 I really liked this book, enough that I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I really liked Hunger Games, but I didn't love it like some did. I had a hard time relating to Katniss (did I spell it right?). I loved Pru the best and she wasn't in it all that much. I just felt more drawn to her character. The circumstances were so horrifying in the book that although it was well done, as a mom, I was so upset by it. I do want to read the rest of the series to see how it all plays out.

I'll let you know in September :)"
Yay for me for paying attention... *hides in embarrassment*

These are the two I am referring to:

TIA :)

Gus, Judithe is having sweet dreams right now in Japan, and I don't want to answer for her re: backdating, but I do know she made a stipulation for people coming into the challenge late:
For those joining later: You may include "extra" firsts in your first month of the challenge to reach a total of 12 books by June 30, 2011. After the first month, only ONE book per month will count!
So, if you have 2 firsts to read this month, you can just do it that way. Otherwise, I'm going to wait and let Judithe answer you re: backdating. :)

This one I'm more comfortable answering for Judithe. :) I would say prequel novellas don't count for a 1st book of a series, so yes, the actual first full book would count as the "first".
