Oh, gosh, that's why I picked it up in the first place, because they wrote the summary so well and it looked so interesting. It's been a letdown so far, they haven't even introduced Eliza or Robert yet. I didn't think half of the book was about Isaac Newton!

Yeah!

Haydensdad | 73 comments Just startedRides a Dread Legion. I'm a little concerned based on the description on the book jacket. There was talk of different planets which made it sound like mixture of sic-fi and fantasy. Too early to make judgement yet however. Can anyone clear this up?

message 4455: by Tyrone (new)

Tyrone (28daysearlier) | 87 comments Not SF. More of the multi-plane stuff with the various demon realms.

There has always been and sniff of SF with the rainbow bridge and multi worlds like Kelewan.

message 4457: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am reading Fragile Eternity and it is OK but my sister absolutely lives this series. I like it but I have to be in the mood for it.

message 4458: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm a few chapters into The Eye of the World and I can already see why the series is so loved. I'm enjoying it already and I can't wait to read a chapter or two before bed. I'm also reading The Rook on my Kindle and I'm listening to All Together Dead on audio.

message 4459: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I usually keep multiple books going to Jenny. One when I can read print, one (audio) during the day when doing chores or just sitting and one (also audio) when I lay down (yeah it keeps me awake sometimes, but that's okay, LOL).

message 4460: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Finished Oryx and Crake, which I just got today from the library. A lot of people were talking about it, but I did not find it that great of a book.

It's a good one. I'll warn you now, though, that the rest of the trilogy is a little disappointing.

message 4462: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments i'm reading two really dense, wordy novels now: David Copperfield & Worm Ouroboros. although i'm enjoying both a lot, i'm also hankering for something a little less heavy on the stylization. i'll probably turn to Last Argument of Kings, which i just bought and have been gazing at longingly.

It is?! Oh, dear. I loved the first one, but can't find the next two anywhere. I have the black prism sitting at home, but I'm afraid to read it lest it spoils something from the original trilogy.

message 4465: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, because I can't be bothered to read a book I haven't read a zillion times before.

Seriously. My copy is falling apart rather literally because I've read it too often. How the rest of the series is still looking pretty I do not know...

Same for Gardens of the Moon.

MrsJ, I'd love to check out Beautiful No Mow Yards. If only we could get that past our HOA!

LOL! I know the feeling. I'm only doing a very small patch of the back yard that was previously used as a tomato garden. I think our HOA would have a fit if I tried to do the whole yard, lol. Though I would enjoy it.

Jalilah I just started Human Croquet by Kate Atkinson In is one of the books on the Endicott Mythic Fiction Reading List: http://endicottstudio.typepad.com/jom...
Do all of you know about it? I have found out about some really good books on that list.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Jalilah, I am a member of that group on GRs. Thanks for the link. I like to keep my eyes open for these kinds of fantasy works.

I think it totally makes sense to read different books on different mediums. I like reading something on my Kindle because it's easier to carry around. Plus it can be fun to have different books for different moods!

I personally loved the whole trilogy. You don't have to worry about ruining anything by reading The Black Prism, it's an entirely different series. I liked it a lot too.

message 4475: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Right now I'm trying to read several library books that are all here at once. Of course that's not unusual anymore, LOL.

I'm part way through a nonfiction I like, but I own it so it has to wait. I'm also about a third of the way through the Stephen Hunter book, Time To Hunt...but I own it to so it's also getting short shrift, and I like it to. I'm most of the way through a Clancy book and have 7 ,more library books waiting with at least one or two more that will be ready for pickup in a day or so.

I just keep sending for library books while hundreds of my own books I really want to read set on my shelves...waiting.

I have no will power.

message 4476: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Finished up The Night Circus and quite enjoyed it! Still reading Cast in Shadow (which has some really clunky writing, but is starting to get better) and have just started Perdido Street Station.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) It's funny how books show up all at the same time. I was just about caught up on review books, and I got six more in the mail yesterday. I'm not going to complain much because it's a good haul!

I'm almost done with Dragon Wish, and I like it a lot. It's more of a fantasy romance. The world building is strong and solid, and the dragon and magic aspects are great. Probably too much romance for some who don't like romance. If you don't mind or do like it, I'd recommend it. The romance is well-integrated into the story. I'll read more of this author.

I waited about 2 years before picking up books 2,3. Maybe that was part of it, but I thought they gave depth to the whole world, and rounded out the trilogy nicely.

I really felt like it was a case of, "Let's print book 1, and then see if it's popular enough to publish the rest. If not, well, (view spoiler)

=)

I think you'll enjoy the rest. I've been dying to read The Black Prism though...

message 4491: by Robert (new)

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 130 comments That's just the SF/F. With others, it's about 17 in total right now. Some are more "active" than others. I may read only a couple pages a week in some. This is easy with some short story collections thrown in there. Others I'm more dedicated to and may read 50-60+ pages in a sitting.

My goal is to finish ~2 books a week this year.

message 4492: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I tend to have 2 to 3 books I'm actively reading but there will sometimes be maybe 6 or more on my currently reading list. For me that means their probably library books and are in the "on deck circle" and will step up as soon as I get an opening in the actively reading ones...

Don't know if that's what you're saying or not but I do keep several books going at once to.

message 4493: by Robert (new)

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 130 comments Pretty much. I usually have several going. If you dig in, 2 of those on my list are Dr. Who novels, which are pretty light reading.

I guess I'm just a moody reader. As good as, say, Sword of Shannara is, I may not always be in the mood for epic fantasy.

Very rarely a book will be so good it gets 100% of my attention until I'm done with it. Last one was Ready Player One, and that was the first time in several years.
