The Society On Da Run #1

Dragons and Cicadas: The Society On Da Run

Rate this book
The space dragons are coming home. No vampires rule this land, no wolves take claim to the Dragon's throne. In this collection of interlinked stories, these dragons are unbound by standard cliches. These dragons live among us, taking our forms, drinking our food, breeding with our bloodlines...nobody knew their families dwelled in the stars, awaiting for a time to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. When cruelty and greed pulled the last straw, they attacked with technology superior to our own. Welcome to The Society, and we're running for our lives.

The world has seen many anomalies. From the passage of the space dragons, to the formation of Crotonians, Planet Earth is in for a good ass-kicking. When the God of Dragons becomes angered at the torture his children endure, his mind is sent into a frenzy of apocalyptic proportions, leading him to summon the rest of his dragonian family from the depths of space. When a young dragonboy wanders into a city of seemingly nice people, he becomes the subject of their dark desires. And the bond of a teenage girl and the auspicious dragon god is tested when she becomes the apple of Perch Tech's illegal experimentation.

Follow the adventures of a wide cast of characters as they encounter the dragons of the Draconizica empire, and Ashuton Karrucci, the god of dragons going about his daily life in Italy. From a story about a small town of dragons ravaged by an airborn virus, to a story about a dragon king on a terraformed Mars, to the story of a girl pregnant with a Dragon god, to the story of a boy born from a tangerine. All of this and more in this book of three hundred stories and poems taking place in a world full of anomalies.

Warning: may cause sleepless nights, slight trauma, online debates about the plausibility of space dragons, might anger some people, might gross out the weak, might make pedophiles scream, might make racists tear their hair out, might make poetry enthusiasts die of excitement, might cause multiple spasms and is definitely not intended for the weak of heart, unless you eat tomatoes.

(This is a collected edition of stories from the magazine series of the same name. This book is updated on the 15th of every 1-2 months with new content from it's original version, so you are paying 2.99 for a large amount of interlinked stories. This experimental literature is called a "Subscription Book.")

I am a young poetess and the author of anime-style chapbooks (short print books under 80 pages) like Dragonworld ETC and I am also the author of a super long collection of flash fiction and poetry called Dragons & Cicadas.

The stories take place in a fantastical world full of interesting aliens. I write only short stories and poetry, most range from 1k to 15k words but vary in different genres.

I enjoy taking risks in the world of writing I want Chapbooks to become the "norm" of the publishing world. After a long break from publishing new issues in the TSODR Magazine (thanks to a certain event), I decided to make my return with The Rebirth of Heaven and The Reboot of Heaven, the latest not-yet-released issues in the TSODR universe. Also, The Masked Man and Treetime With Tosh will soon be published in a very awesome e-zine, but those projects are not yet finished so I cannot speak about them. Also, Google Play will be accepting pre-orders for The Rebirth of Heaven and The Reboot of Heaven when the mag/book issues appear on their site. Stay tuned to this review to know when preorders open up.

It feels good to return to my roots.

Amazon has removed the original book because they said my genre creates a poor customer experience. Okay, so...we can't make it work? It can be found on other sites like Smashwords.

The Dovahkin is strong with this one...NOT!

This book completely sucks.

It's not a full novel like I had hoped. It's a bunch of Fantasy/Sci Fi short stories and poetry and some of the stories don't even feature dragons! It's a shabby excuse of a dragon book. SPACE DRAGONS??? COME ON! George Martin can do better than that.

.......space dragons? really?......

On top of the survival stories that would make Halo fans cry, there's a bunch of dragon sex going on in a couple of stories, including a Lolita knockoff. There were interracial relationships that I could care less for, dragons and owls fighting over Italy and intergalactic warfare mumbo jumbo that makes Star Wars look like Candyland. OY!

The plot, if any, was CLICHED. Dragons have been tried before and making them space dragons does no justice. Dragon shifters piloting space ships? Wyverns announcing war on humanity? Dragon gods falling in love with black women? Um...NO. On top of THAT, there's a bunch of reoccurring characters that makes Game of Thrones look like a tea party. The "innovative" stories bored me to death and the dragons were just downright pallid. The recent "update" didn't do it justice either. This is another reason to stay away from "indies."

I really wanted to enjoy this :(

Now, onto the good points (which are few):

1) I applaud the author for trying to make black literature (and Sci Fi and Fantasy) different, and adding different nationalities to every story.

2) I did enjoy the dragon shifters, which is something I haven't read before.

3) That front cover is KICKASS!

Other than that, this book is...you get the idea. When I saw it was about dragons and promised to "uncliche dragon literature" I jumped into this mood:

Sadly for me, The Society On Da Run didn't deliver

However, it might appeal to gamers:

UNIQUE.

If I had to sum this book up in one word that would be it. The author has tried a new approach to storytelling here and in a way it makes the reading very interesting. We are introduced to a new world (or in my case re-introduced) with space-dragons and cicadas and a whole new fantastical realm out there. It also makes this book very long.

This was actually my second time reading the story. Unike the first read where I had a hard time connecting with the story and characters, this time the story got me and my feels. The characters had more depth, they had back-stories to build them and a lot of space for them to grow within the book. The world building was more vast in the newer edition and showed different facets of the same story. It made things more.. interesting, for the lack of a better word.

The music linked to the book did wonders for the moodsetting while reading too. I don't usually listen to music while reading but I must say it enriched the experience of reading D&C

But ultimately it comes down to this - I am an impatient reader. And this book was long. At 1000+ pages and counting and a lot of stories that tie up, don't tie up and take a leap and are not in a chronological order - my head was a mess. The index helped, a lot actually, but at times it still took me a while to place the events and the characters. And for someone who prefers to finish a book in a single sitting, this felt infinitely long.

In terms of story-telling and world-building though this update (11th? 12th? 13th? I'm not really sure which one I read :/) is miles ahead of the 8th update (the one in the review linked above). One can also see Baldwin herself growing as a writer in the process as her voice grew stronger. This book is unique, exceptionally so, and for someone looking for a taste of a new fantasy world this is a whole meal for them (if only a tad bit too long).

This was a really long book but it was made of up short stories (they were connected but separate, if that makes any sense) so it balanced out.

If you’re the kind of person who has to read the entire book all at once, good luck.

But, if you are okay just reading a few stories whenever you’re bored, this is the book for you.

It took me a while to read it because it was pithy, not the length but the stories, you know?

Once again, the author has astounded me with her prose. It’s magnificent and alluring.

The characters were relatively well developed for short stories.

Like mythical creatures? This is SO the book for you.

Overall, I really enjoyed it but it took some work to get through it and it was confusing at best when reading but hang on just a little bit longer and you’ll be fine!

"PLEASE NOTE: these stories are told out of order and it is up to you, the READER, to put them back in order according to their “timeline placements.” Look for sentences before every story that state one of the following: 50 years after the dragon war OR 10 years after [[INSERT STORY_NAME]]. Also, this is a collection of interlinked DRAGON STORIES, so don’t expect a simple read. There will be complex undertones, messages, plotlines and things you cannot uncover in one read-through. also, a lot of misspellings are intentional (like “Dragonchild” instead of “Dragon child” and “Piedmonte” instead of “Piedmont”). If you cannot piece together the plot, refer to the answer key at the end of this book."

? Let's see how I like this.. It's different, definitely.

Updating this review because the old one doesn't reflect myself anymore.

Anyway, this book is shit, not only because all of the rape, whoring, mpreg and more, is the plagiarism of the main theme composed for one of the novels of Hagenaya by Chiyomaru that is intolerable.
I don't care if did or din't get officially in one of the actualization of the book, it existed at one point, and that's enough.

Also I don't care if you don't know who is Hagenaya Jin or Chiyomaru Shikura are, Plagiarism is a capital sin and Songfics are forbidden for a reason.
