I have the same approach to series. I always try to space out books. I've heard good things about the Raine Benares series.

You know...I used to only read series if I could read them back to back. And now I can own multiple books in a series and not pick up book for for over a year.

I blame GR!

Ditto on that. The Tortall Realm books were excellent!

Just acquired book two of the Dresden Files.

I feel the same.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I don't like running out of books in a series, so that's why I break up reading through them. Enjoying Tamora Pierce. I'm glad I had picked up a couple of omnibus collections of hers that I can dive into.

I agree, Amanda. I'm currently reading Blood Rites and am thoroughly enjoying it. I like how the series introduces different types of supernatural baddies in each book. It's not always the same evil mastermind every time.

I don't know...I used to want to get to the end of the story soooo bad. I could never wait. Now? I'm really digging stand alones.

I haven't picked up a Mercy Thompson book in forever. I think something's broken.

message 4260: by Traci (new)

Traci I used to have to finish series straight through but for the past year or so I've been jumping around. But then when I go back after a long time between I forget too much. So now I'm reading epic fantasy mostly straight through with small breaks and reading urban fantasy when I feel like it.

So. Finished The Gunslinger. Continuing with The Drawing of the Three. Liked the first book but hope the series does get better like I've heard.

message 4261: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments It sometimes depends on the series. I have gotten caught up in a series and grabbed every book around or available (it's how I read the Dresden books. Once I found them I burned through them one after another). I just finished a "brain candy" action book last night (I sat up late). I have the third book now but not the second. I plan to download the second from audible today and jump right into it.

On the other hand I have a stack of Repairman Jack books, Simon Green books (parts of three series), Stephen Hunter books and others on my shelves waiting. Sometimes a series gets in your head and you want to stay with while you're "in the groove". :)

I thought the first one was horrible and I read it twice. After that, the series is really good. I would give the whole series 4 stars. Some were better than others. My favorite was Wolves of the Calla.

message 4263: by Traci (new)

Traci Cool. :)
I loved the idea. The world. And character. So I have hopes for the series.

message 4264: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Feb 24, 2012 09:40AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I usually have the period of getting reacquainted with the story when I get back into a series. But it doesn't bother me, really.

With my review gig, I end up reading books out of order in the series, and so far, it's been okay. I just go through that 'who, what?--scratches head' initial period, and then things fall into place.

I'm not an especially patient reader, so I don't read a lot of really long, epic fantasy books, so I guess that's why I can get away with skipping around between series.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I just thought the first Dark Tower book was okay. Good to know they get better, Scott.

message 4266: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments The Dark Tower is a series I got trapped in LOL. I think it was a mixture of good and bad.

message 4267: by [deleted user] (new)

Currently ploughing though Blood and Iron by Tony Ballantyne. Far better than the first in the series!

Just finished this one. DEFINITELY worth the read!

message 4271: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah Yes, I really like the combination of Urban Fantasy and Raymond Chandler style detective fiction.
If Philip Marlowe became a wizard you'd get Harry Dresden!

message 4272: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm reading Old Man's War. This makes me very happy :)

message 4273: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm over half way through A Perfect Blood (The Hollows, #10) by Kim Harrison and I really want to buy Kim Harrison a bottle of wine to say thank you! Such a great series, and this may be the best edition yet :)

message 4274: by Traci (last edited Feb 25, 2012 04:18PM) (new)

Traci Laurel, you're talking me into starting that series up again...Lol. I loved them but you know how sometimes it is. You stop a series and don't remember why.

Just finished The Drawing of the Three. I actually liked the first one better. Oh well. I bought all seven in one go so I'm continuing on with The Waste Lands. I'm hoping for more of Roland and his world in upcoming books.

message 4275: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm not certain, but I think the next book may be the last one? If so, I can see the direction she's moving the ending towards...

I would miss Jenks terribly if the series ended. And I want to know more about Bis!

message 4276: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments I stopped Kim Harrison for a while because I felt like there was a huge lack of character growth, and Rachel's continued idiocy was getting on my nerves. Seems like it's improved a lot in the last book.

message 4277: by Haydensdad (new)

Haydensdad | 73 comments Just finished two by Jim Butcher. Finished the second of the Codex Alera and really enjoyed it, not as much as the first however. Jumped into the Dresden files last night and finished the first in the series. It was very refreshing to read a stand alone(I know its part of a series)but I felt as though there was some closure at the end. Looking forward to the next one.
Am getting ready to read A Wise Man's Fear. A little daunted as I borrowed it from the library and it is almost 1000 pages(small print).

message 4278: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments MOST of the Dresden Files can be read as stand alone novels, in part. They most all tell their own story. But read them in order as there is a larger story building in the background. By the time you get the most recent ones while they still tie up a bit the back story or "sage" is moving to the foreground.

message 4279: by Haydensdad (new)

Haydensdad | 73 comments Had planned on reading them in order but it was nice to just read a book and at the end have the hero defeat the villian and know that there was no to be continued in another volume or two. I also enjoyed being able to read it in a couple of sittings.

Wow Traci, you are really plowing through the series.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I'm reading Surrender the Dark by LA Banks (RIP). I'm enjoying it a lot. She was a good writer. I wasn't fond of the two Huntress books I read, but overall, I've enjoyed most of what I've read by her, and this especially. I'm sad that there won't be any more books from her.

message 4285: by Jalilah (last edited Feb 28, 2012 12:29PM) (new)

Jalilah Just finished Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Being a fan of the old the Philip Marlowe noir films ,I really enjoyed this novel and hope to read more in this series.
I did however find the violence quite intense and for this reason I don’t think I could read this series straight through. I’d need take a break and read other types of novels in-between.

So now I have decide what to read next.. Beauty by Robin McKinley or City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare....

I have never read "City" so no opinion there, but will say that I fell in love with Beauty the first time I read it many years ago ... and I'm still re-reading it with tremendous enjoyment. Just plain fun.

Aloha | 940 comments Hello, everyone. Long time no talk if you're not in my countless other forums. I finally have an excuse to pop in here. I finally got around to reading A Game of Thrones. I am really enjoying it. I started watching the HBO episodes, too. I haven't enjoyed anything with swords, the steel kind, uh....the metallic steel kind, in a long time. I'm glad this broke me out of it.

Caity (adivineeternity) I'm rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for about the zillionth time thanks to my uncontrolled Harry Potter obsession. At least I'm happy with this obsession, and reading the same 7 books frequently is a far healthier obsession than some.

Nothing wrong with that whatsoever!! ;) Whenever I have no more books to read, I go "Ah, I'll reread Harry Potter!"

I'm still working my way through The Eye of the World, and I'm doing quite well :D However, being an English Major requires reading (Not that I'm complaining!) So I'm also reading Great Expectations.

Aloha | 940 comments Thanks, Mrs. J! I am really enjoying A Game of Thrones. Now, this is what I was looking for, something well-written, great characterization, absorbing plot, and terrific descriptions. What took me so long? This stopped me from looking towards Harry Potter whenever I'm in the mood for fantasy. I heard that the Malazan series is also great. Anybody has an opinion on the series?
