Traci I love the first MHI. I like the blend of urban and epic (some Lovecraftian too) fantasy but IMO the third is much more of a generic urban fantasy. I'm not even halfway though. Maybe it gets better.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'm a big Correia fan to. Haven't read the third yet (it's laying just to my left on an over stuffed book shelf). Plan to get to it...some day. :)

Traci, I'm with you. Not really impressed. I think what made the first two shine was the character voice, and this one doesn't achieve the same level of uniqueness. Even more of an action/horror movie plot than the first two.

Jalilah I love fairy tale retellings and this book I am reading now is delightful: Princess of the Midnight Ball

message 4507: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (daughterofoak) I am currently re-reading the Farseer Trilogy for the FA challenge.
I have also been reading The Killer of Little Shepherds: A True Crime Story and the Birth of Forensic Science, which is absolutely fascinating, if a little gruesome.

I do too ... Robin McKinley's "Beauty" and Mercedes Lackey's "Fairy Godmother" series are some of my favorites.

This sounds like something that needs to go on my to-read list.

I have this one on my TBR pile.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Just finished The Pack and it was good. UF about a New Yorker who starts hanging out with a few guys and develops strange traits and behaviors.

I finished this book. I rated it 4 stars. It really depends what kind of person you are as to how you will feel about the story. Personally I found it very interesting. I began questioning my self in regards to certain aspects of the book. Reading it also made me moody. lol
Enjoy~

message 4513: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Great Amber, that is all my family needs is for me to be moody. I saw that the movie will be out this winter.

message 4514: by Mathew (new)

Mathew Smith | 4 comments Finally started that infamous staple in the fantasy humour section - The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I'm onto #2, The Light Fantastic (Discworld, #2) by Terry Pratchett and I'm finding it much funnier than the first book - hoping the trend continues and they get even better as the series goes on (which would be good seeing as there are so many of them).

message 4515: by Traci (new)

Traci I've loved most Pratchett books I've read. :)

I'm continuing my Mistborn reread with the second book.

I think that perhaps the first might be considered less funny than some of the subsequent books because The Color of Magic has to do all the hard work of establishing the world, the society, the magic system and the characters. The others job is maybe so much easier because they only have to a fraction of the work the first in the series has to and can therefore concentrate more on the humour and action.

message 4517: by Pauline (new)

Pauline | 477 comments Finally, finally started to read The Name of the Wind. I have this really bad habit of buying a book then letting it sit for years on my bookshelf...

For some reason it is not what I expected at all. I tried to stay away from really specific reviews of hyped books so I had no idea what it was about besides magicness and that a lot of people liked it. Really enjoying it so far :)

I seen the trailer and that's how I found out about the book. Tilda Swinton seems perfect for the role. I was surprised to see John C. Reilly as the husband in the dark film. I bet he will be perfect as well.
Very intense book.

message 4521: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Grave Peril is one of my favorites in the series, but I do love most of them (except the first two).

I am reading The Shadow Reader and listening to The Clan of the Cave Bear

I am also reading on separate ereaders, so I only get to them occasionally Wool 4: The Unraveling and The Walking Dead, Vol. 2: Miles Behind Us

The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel Wool 4 The Unraveling by Hugh Howey The Walking Dead, Vol. 2 Miles Behind Us by Robert Kirkman

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I've heard a lot of good things about Wool.

message 4523: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) It is really good. Each one is a novella so far, maybe 100 pages. They are fast moving, well developed, decent suspsense and compelling. I will be sad when I finish 5.

message 4524: by Viv (new)

Viv JM Just finished Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1) by Juliet Marillier . Loved it so much, have started straight away on the next one, Son of the Shadows (Sevenwaters, #2) by Juliet Marillier

I've been meaning to start that series (Norton)! How is it?

message 4528: by Jalilah (last edited Apr 20, 2012 09:16AM) (new)

Jalilah I am currently reading Fool Moon by Jim Butcher and have mixed feelings. I find the violence a bit intense but I do like the Noir detective style and the main character Harry Dresden, but the situation with Karin Murphy is really annoying. I don’t want to give any spoilers; does this keep happening in all the novels? I think those of you who read the series will know what I am talking about.

message 4529: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) No it doesn't, the Murphy issue resolves really at the end of #2 and into #3. (view spoiler) Her constant doubting was very annoying, but thankfully short lived. Also, I am sure you have heard this before 1 and 2 are the weakest in the series!

message 4530: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I finished Wool 4 and the ending was amazing! I quickly downloaded Wool 5. I am really enjoying the audio of Clan of the Cave Bear too. It isn't what I expected at all. I am also reading Shadow Reader and it is one of the best urban fantasies with a female protag that I have read in a long time.

Wool 4 The Unraveling by Hugh Howey Wool 5 The Stranded by Hugh Howey The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams

I want to warn you. Please stop with the Earth Children series after book 3. 4-6 will hold nothing but heartbreak for you. Nothing. It's too horrible to even discuss. *sigh*

message 4533: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments I am reading Gardens of the Moon. While it was a confusing start, I am enjoying it more as I progress. I really enjoyed the rooftop chase scene, the author pulled it off really well!

I also just finished Tome of the Undergates, which I really enjoyed, even though it had problems. I look forward to reading the next!

Thank you for the warning, I will definitely do that! If it is even too horrible to discuss, I do not need that in my reading life.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) That Hideous Strength and A Walk Down the Nightside
I just finished the first Nightside book and it did not impress me, maybe it will get better as the series goes on.

message 4536: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Love C.S.Lewis.

I found the Nightside books a mixed bag so far. Liked a couple, disliked one a lot. I have a lot left to read.

message 4537: by Regina (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 143 comments Finishing Mockingjay (81%)... I know, everyone is generally unhappy with the last book, but I'm still enjoying so far. (Not quite as exciting as the first two though...)

Just started listening to Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and I've got a new narrator to amaze me! Khristine Hvam- very talented and easy on the ears. Enjoyable story too, a bit slow to get going, but I'm not even 20% in... so we'll see.

Gavin | 20 comments Kara wrote: "Finishing Mockingjay (81%)... I know, everyone is generally unhappy with the last book, but I'm still enjoying so far. (Not quite as exciting as the first two though...)"

I completley agree. I'm about halfway through Mockingjay.

Recently finished Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, can't say enougth good things about it. Easily his best book.

Mathew Smith | 4 comments MrsJoseph wrote: "I want to warn you. Please stop with the Earth Children series after book 3. 4-6 will hold nothing but heartbreak for you. Nothing. It's too horrible to even discuss. *sigh*"

I found the same thing!
The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel was so good that I took up the series. But, I don't think I even finished the fourth one...I found they just went nowhere, and they were so wordy...and the love story is so drawn out...not the type of read for me.
So, read the first and second, even the third if you have the time, but, for god sakes man stop there.

I didn't like that one, either.

message 4544: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I finished Sandstorm and Material Witness.

I am currently reading Mile 81 and I should be able to finish that on the way home so that I can start The Wind Through the Keyhole tonight.

message 4545: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I am currently reading Kevin J. Anderson's A Forest of Stars (I was getting so into the story yesterday that I almost missed my stop in the metro, lol), Christopher Duggan's The Force of Destiny: A History of Italy Since 1796 and Tea Obreht's The Tiger's Wife (sort of started this one yesterday; about time I started it, been hearing so much about it and it's been sitting on my shelf for some time now).

Sandy | 12 comments I've just finished 'The Stormcaller' by Tom Lloyd and loved it. Powerful hero fantasy and I will be ordering bk2 soon.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I just finished reading Undone Deeds, and I think it's the last book in the Connor Grey series. I'm bummed about that. :(

message 4550: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Finished Undone by Rachel Caine last night/this morning. Not sure what to read next!
